I have two cats, Mario the victim, and Onyx, the aggressor. My household peace is being destroyed by Onyx's aggression, this has been going on for years and we have been trying so hard to keep the peace. Mario is a VERY friendly easy going cat, a real gentle giant that hates fighting and actually used to split up fights with other two and refused to let them duke it out before he got too scared to do it. Onyx on the other hand is one of the most wickedly intelligent cats I've seen, he's sweet with me, but he's sneaky with a long memory and he keeps trying to skin Mario.
Even when I prevent the fight he knows my schedule and movements and will postpone things or change his route to get Mario later. The fights are so sudden, it's not even they posture and then it starts. It's Mario is sitting in my lap purring up at me and Onyx snatches him out, slams him to the floor and I end up flinging across the room just trying to split them up. Or he will randomly corner him and Mario is cowering and submitting and he still gets attacked before I can get to them. Mario is so happy and curious but he can't even walk around the house without me because he's terrified, with good reason, that Onyx will come flying from the shadows. I think part of the issue is Onyx is jealous of the kind of attention Mario gets. I try to give Onyx more attention to see if that's the issue, but it almost seems like it makes Onyx feel more entitled to me and he goes after Mario harder. We did pheromones, we don't let the fights go, we seperate them, but the aggression is so one sided and Onyx is so smart that he reads when we have let our guard down and strikes.
We have taken him to the vet before for this and nothing. We're going to try again but we're honestly seriously considering rehoming Onyx. It would be devastating to do that, but none of these cats are young; Onyx is 12, Mario is almost 15 and he doesn't deserve all this and I'm terrified one day I wont be fast enough and it will cost me my best friend. And there's a 3rd cat in all this (she's a girl so Onyx has litterally never touched her) and shes so wound up and nervous that she just wanders the house at red alert 24/7. Even if we can solve the behavior issues I feel like the other two might be too traumatized to ever relax around him again, since we have thought we solved this issue several times, with long stretches of peace, until Onyx suddenly snaps and we're cleaning up bloody ears and chunks of fur. I'm just... Does anyone have any advice? Please?
