Hi, I'm going through an amicable divorce and need advice on what to do with our pets. Family are not very helpful so turning to you guys!
I'm 37 and my wife is 32, we will be living in different countries in a few months. Separation is amicable. We have been together 11 years (so no animals were pre-existing).
We have 4 pets:
Cat Anne, 10 F Cat Barry, 5 M Cat Carl, 3 M Dog Xena, 9 F
I have normally been the one to take care of most of the pet stuff, including walking the dog.
Cat dynamics:
Cat Anne is a loner, but she's my loner. She would be very unhappy without me.
Cat Barry is a manly cat, asserts his dominance over Anne. Have had him since he was 5 months, he is super attached to me and has urinary problems when I go away.
Cat Carl was found in a drainpipe when he was 6 weeks. We took him in with the expectation of giving him away but Wife couldn't give him up and he became very attached to Barry. Barry was essentially a mother to Carl. Carl is quite nervous by nature, but not shy, very playful.
So now Carl is very bonded to Barry, sleeps on him, grooms him etc. Barry tolerates this happily, but is not very demonstrative back, though I do occasionally see him grooming Carl.
Obviously cats and people have priorities too: Carl is essentially Wife's cat and Anne and Barry are mine.
Dog Xena gets in well with Anne, doesn't give two poops about the other two. Barry loves Xena, even if it is u requited.
Wife understands that there may be separation difficulty, especially between Barry and Carl. Obviously she very much wants to take Carl, but she does understand that this may not be possible.
On the other hand, I would find it difficult to move on with my life alone with 1 dog and 3 cats. It has been ok with 2 of us, but it's a lot of pets for one person.
So that's the situation. What are your thoughts reddit?
