My cat has hyperthyroidism (was notified by vet this morning) and is now doing the topical medicine in his ear. We have to wear gloves and wash our hands after as we aren’t allowed to touch the stuff apparently since it’s absorbed through skin. When we first got the diagnosis, we were told we could do pills which would also be twice a day. There is also apparently food that could help instead of medicine or there is even the injection that is supposedly a permanent solution and is $1,500.
After doing the inner ear topical medicine once in his ear, I’m already feeling like I should have chosen the pill for him. He’s never taken pills before so my vet thought that since he free feeds, he might not take it, but just now thinking, I know he would eat it immediately as if it were a treat. We’ll probably do the 60 days of topical and then try the pills as long as the doctor approves of that.
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this with a cat around 13 years old (or even younger or older if you have a story to tell). I’m just so afraid for my baby. He has a heart murmur that may be associated with the hyperthyroidism. I’m just afraid I’m not making the right choices for him. He already has a bacterial infection in his ear that he has ear drops for for the next two weeks that I didn’t think about when choosing the topical solution in his ear. The vet says it’s fine to use together, but Morty HATES things going in his ear. He will be all twitchy for hours after his ears get even slightly wet. Does anyone have advice on dealing with hyperthyroidism in cats?
