Is it OK to leave a cat home alone during the day?

I mean, I know that it's OK, insofar as knowing the cat likely won't be endangered, or starved or left without water.

What I mean is... I work long hours, from around 6AM to 6PM, Monday through Friday, and sometimes on Saturdays too.

I want very much to adopt a cat, but I almost can't stand the thought of the thing being lonesome throughout the day. Of course I'd keep cat toys in the apartment, and cats usually like to just bum around, anyway - but still, I worry that it will be lonely and depressed.

I've thought about getting two cats to keep each other company, but then my apartment pet deposit would be quite high.

Am I right to worry about this? Does anyone else have a cat that they leave home alone during the days?
