My partner and I are buying a home, which means we can finally get a dog. We were going to adopt a rescue, but we've been dogsitting my Father in law's 5 year old Cocker Spaniel here and there for the last couple of months, so my partner asked if we could just have his dog, since he's previously made comments about how difficult it is to take care of him in his older age. He's agreed, and it looks like we're going to be taking the pup in September. The dog has known my partner since he was a tiny puppy, and me since he was about 1 or so, so he's very comfortable and familiar with us already. But I know moving him from one home to the next is very different to just dogsitting him for a few days: so how do we make this transition easy and stress-free for him? He's pretty clingy and we don't want him to get upset when he realises he's not going back to his old home. We've already discussed having him stay with us temporarily a few times before the move to get used to the environment, and making sure my partner's family come visit him often. Is there anything else we can do to make sure he's happy and doesn't feel abandoned?
tl;dr: we're rehoming my father in law's dog and want to make sure he's comfortable and not anxious being in a new situation
