My cat doesn't want me to hold him anymore

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or some advice.

My cat is a very cuddly maincoon cross with thick fur.He hates being combed but with the recent rain his fur had become knotted so I forcefully comb him which he hated and howl for 15min straight.

Obviously afterwards he hated me but now he's fine but he won't let me hold him now and meows at me to put him down or just runs away. But other than that he still want pats.

I know he doesn't trust me now but how do I rebuild that trust? Will he ever forgive me? Worse is that he still needs combing but I'm to scared to push him over the edge. He's been like this for 3days now.
