I currently just got a cat of my own, Camilla! My roommate also has a cat named Trigger, and I'm working on trying to introduce them correctly.
Camilla is laid back, gentle, loving, and sweet. The best I can describe her is literally a queen (thus why we kept the name Camilla). She's recently spayed and had kittens around 10 weeks ago, all of which were adopted before I adopted her. Trigger is a very curious, playful, energetic, and sweet cat. He's fully neutered and is overall a wonderful cat as well.
What I have going on right now is that we have Camilla's home base set up in our bedroom. She has an elevated food bowl, water fountain, litter, cat tree, and cat bed. When we took her home yesterday night, she hunkered under our bed for about 30 minutes but then was out all the time. She's very friendly and loves pets and declared her own spot on our bed where she normally hangs out now. She's always around me unless she decides she wants to chill somewhere else for a bit, but then comes and visits me after awhile.
Between how comfortable she is right away, how chill she is with everything, and the fact that she seems like she wants out, we decided to lock Trigger in his owner's room while he's home and in the room so she can explore on her own while supervised. This is where I'm unsure if I made a mistake.
She sniffed the door Trigger was behind and started hissing, just once, until I lead her away from the door. There was no noise Trigger was making that we could hear, but she obviously knew something was behind the door that she didn't like, most likely by smelling him.
I'm not sure if we did this all too soon or if I messed up and they will have a harder time getting used to each other. When I've open my bedroom door, Trigger is almost always outside and I believe they have seen each other at least once. While I was in the bathroom I heard a hiss, which I believe was Camilla sending Trigger right outside the door. I had to move Camilla to a 2nd room while the door to our bedroom was being worked on, and at that time Trigger was checking out our room and getting a whiff of her, which I thought was completely fine.
As I'm typing this, she seems to want to go out again. Am I doing this wrong?
If you would like to know what I'm planning on next: Scent swapping with a sock, having Camilla hang out where Trigger usually is, making them eat next to each other with a physical barrier between them (I was thinking a baby gate, but maybe a door first?), and then playtime together. All of this over the course of days/weeks.
