Silly question on cat urine, toxic fumes, and books

Hello pet owners of Reddit. I have a silly question.

Can cat urine fumes live on books? I have a bin of books I want to donate to an elementary school library. This bin does not have a lid, and had been in a room for about 8 months. In this extra room, the cats would sneak in and go to the bathroom. The room began to smell strongly of urine, and I took the bin out and moved it to an unsmelly room. An accident never happened on the books or the bin.

I did clean the books with disinfecting wipes, and more than anything they were dusty. They are very nice books, and meant to be given to the library before quarantine. Now I’m ready to donate them since the library is opening. So toxic fumes?

Thanks! 😆
