Tried to play with my cat and now he's acting very strange/scared of me?

So me and my boyfriend recently rescued a five-ish? month old kitten that had been thrown out of a car near our hometown, he was in really really rough shape. He's doing great now and we were surprised at how friendly and cuddly he was, literally the best kitten ever! Not shy around ANYBODY, the whole nine yards, can't stop gawking over how lucky we got. He's dewormed, all of his problems have been fixed, he has been neutered, up to date on shots, fully vetted and the whole nine yards. We have had him for almost two months now.

Tonight he was sitting on my shelf and I was on the bed opposite the shelf. He's usually in a pretty playful mood at night and we love to play with him. However he was on the shelf staring at me so I thought it would be funny to act like a cat to play with him. I stared him in the eyes and slowly got off the bed and onto all fours while maintaining eye contact because I'm an idiot and thought I'd look like a cat playing. However he puffed up and arched his back and started making the WEIRDEST noise at me and hissing if I got too close. IMMEDIATELY when he started to do this I backed up and I was so confused! He ran into the bathroom and my boyfriend held him and he was fine with him but WOULDNT STOP STARING AT ME. And every time I got close he'd hiss and make that same really weird noise (I don't even know how to describe it- I looked up funny cats talking and yelling like humans on Youtube and it was like that- like he was saying nonononono over again? idk). So we left him in the bathroom/closet area for about ten minutes and I went back in and he puffed up again but I kept doing the slow blink at him (I think cats like that? Idk apparently I'm an idiot) and he let me pet him and he was totally fine! Rubbing into my hand and acting okay. However he's still been acting so, so weird for the past hour. Every time I approach him he puffs up and flattens his ears but lets me pet him fine! He keeps staring at me but once he jumped up on the table and head butted my face like normal like nothing was wrong! Like I said though if I approach him he acts scared, and makes the weird noises again if I get on the ground to lay next to him. But if I'm petting him he's totally fine.

Reddit, how badly did I mess up? Is he going to be scared of me forever? Is there a way to fix that, or should I just let him sleep it off?
