How does pet insurance work?

I have a one year old dog and a two and a half month old kitty and I’ve been considering pet insurance in order to lower their wellness cost but was wondering if I could just cancel it after they receive their vaccinations and stuff? Also I’m on the lookout for a more affordable pet insurance that’s a good deal
