Look, ill take any opinion, but I want a medical opinion
My 13 1/2 year old yellow lab has been a great dog. She has definitely slowed down and as shes aged has had a couple problems in the last year. The first symptom was a lowered red blood cell count. Last year at this time she had 42 red blood cells per cubic centimeter. 6 weeks ago she was at 35, 4 weeks ago she was at 34, 2 weeks ago she was at 31. The vet suggested an abdominal ultrasound, as it could be internal bleeding.
The ultrasound revealed a 22 cm tumor on her spleen which wasnt discovered during an abdominal exam. It could be benign or malignant. They dont know.
They are suggesting surgery to remove the spleen and performing a biopsy on it and the liver. If they find cancer, thats it, the vet says chemo just isnt worth it (which we agree with). However if the tumor is benign, the fear is that the tumor could rupture and fill her stomach with blood, which creates a whole list of other issues.
The surgery will cost anywhere from $1800-$3000. Other than this issue she is completely healthy. No other problems.
Is the surgery worth it?
Please help
