We have two wonderful 3 year old boy cats that I raised since they were kittens. They are friendly, get along with everyone for the most part (they’re scared of kids mostly because they were never introduced to any when they were young so they just hide if we have someone with kids over.
In December 2020 we got a 2yo F GS. The cats weren’t ecstatic, definitely cautious but absolutely unafraid of their new sister. She had a healthy curiosity about them and I think mostly wanted to play with them (no stalking or vicious behavior) while they either paid her no attention, and sometimes “patronized” her by simply sitting in the middle of the hallway - the dog was intimidated by this and wouldn’t go through (it was quite funny in my opinion). All this is to say that there was never any real aggression, the cats always had a safe space to observe her from and she was never aggressive with them.
Recently the cats warmed up to her a lot which is great. One will let her come near him with and hang out, the other one will even head butt her and rub against her legs. The thing is she started licking their faces which they don’t seem to mind and then nibbling on the back of their necks, not aggressively but imagine when a dog is scratching itself with its front teeth. The cats don’t seem to mind it either but we’ve been stopping it just in case - we don’t want her to hurt them even if it’s unintentional. Is this behavior normal or does it mean anything? Is she just having a motherly moment and it’s loving or is this a behavior that should be corrected?
Edit: I should add that we used to have a problem with the GS and other dogs but never my cats. She got territorial around us very quickly. She was previously living with about 20 other dogs, as soon as we got her and she saw any other dog she would turn into a barking beast. It’s better now because I’ve introduced her slowly to my friends very friendly dog about her size and they’re best pals now. Her only issue that we weren’t able to fix is small dogs. I don’t know what it is but she goes off on small dogs - barking, fur up, aggressive stance and sometimes even stalking.
