cat put in bathroom at night?

Hello,

I have just adopted a 4 month old kitten, and he is absolutely the best. However, my family insists on him being put in the bathroom (which is connected to the laundry, so is quite large). Every night, he meows for a couple minutes, and then, realising no one would come and let him out, he makes his way to the bed and sleeps. He began clawing at the door, and at one point even opened it, so he resorted to putting a door stopper there. I really want to let him out at night, but my family insists against it. Is this healthy for my cat and if not how to convince my family to let him out.

BTW he is allowed to roam the house in daytime.
