Hi pet parents! It’s your vet here. Since covid hit, vet hospitals have become busy…really busy. Like I don’t get a lunch ever and spend the day running around the hospital reminding myself to breathe so I don’t start hyperventilating busy. This probably comes with people working from home and being able to keep better track of what’s going on with their fur babies. And for the most part, I love it. I love that everyone is taking better care of their pets. However, with that positive of course comes the negative. So here are a few things I wish you knew so you could make my day (and life) a little easier.
-
Put your pet on flea, tick and heartworm prevention EVERY MONTH, YEAR ROUND, FOR LIFE. I don’t want to hear that Fluffy’s precious feet have never touched the outside ground in her entire life. But oh she’s got a flea on her now and she must have gotten that from our hospital. No. Please. For the love of God. Just do it.
-
Get your baby vaccinated. And don’t go down to the co-op to get that crap that isn’t temperature controlled.
-
If you listen to a breeder’s advice over what I am telling you…I don’t even know how to finish this. I’m just insulted. Very insulted.
-
If you are rude to my staff or myself, I will do everything I can for your pet. However, I will remember you forever, charge you more (I have full control over your bill :)), and then refer you to a specialist so they can deal with you.
-
If you are nice to my staff and I, I will remember you forever and do everything I can for you and your pet. Your bill will for sure be less and your pet will probably be healthier.
-
If your cat has stopped eating for more than a day, get that kitty to a hospital. Don’t wait.
-
My technicians and receptionists work HARD. Remember them when you’re posting a comment about the hospital or just a simple thank you would make his/her day.
-
STOP feeding your pet raw food and grain free diets. If you have questions about why these aren’t acceptable, please ask your vet.
-
While we’re on it, stop over feeding your pet. I have seen so many morbidly obese creatures over the past 2 years and I have just had it. As a rule, take your pets goal weight and divide it by 2.2. Then multiply by 30. And add 70. That is the total amount of calories you should be feeding a day.
-
Your pets have anal glands. Some pets can express them on their own and others can’t. Please get them checked regularly so they don’t abscess out. It’s really gross and painful when that happens.
-
When I am doing a dental cleaning and your pet’s teeth are literally flying out of his head because they are so diseased, but you have forbidden me to extract any teeth, there’s only 1 person to be mad at. And you should know who that person is.
Love, Your vet
