Tl:dr at the bottom.
So I went to the store to get some pinky mice for my king snake, he's a good guy and chills and is still a baby.
I was looking at some pythons over there and noticed a tank behind me, and it had a Green Anaconda that was being boarded (store takes care of your pet for a daily fee while you're away or relocating or whatever) and had a beautiful tank.
The manager for the reptile section told me the snake was actually a bit sick when they took him in, because he didn't have a tank with water. Anacondas need water.
So a week after they took him he started feeling better because he had the right environment and started eating.
The snake itself the manager told me would cost around $700-$800, but the fees with him are extremely insane. You need someone to go out into the jungle, into the bushes, look for one and capture it; this is all while avoiding whatever else is in the jungle that might try to kill you. So the capture fee is insane, then importing and handling, and then you've got the live set up for the snake.
The tank the store had him in was around $500, but the live set up for the snake is around $400 or so. This is all for a baby Anaconda, and you're gonna have to change the set up when it's older, and they grow up to 20ft, and they're wide bodied. They're friggin Anacondas. For a baby, the feeding isn't so bad because it's mice and rats and you gradually increase the size, all the way up until they're adults where you feed them pigs and goats. Pigs and goats.
Now I have a few pets, my wife and I absolutely love animals and we wouldn't take in an animal we know we wouldn't be able to take care of, or an animal that wouldn't be happy in an adoptive environment.
I get this is an exotic animal, it's an Anaconda, but seriously? It would be happier in its natural environment and not as someone's friggin pet. You'd need an entire room for the guy and a swimming pool, essentially. I get it if you're wealthy and wipe your ass with $100 bills then use a bidet and then dry up with more $100 bills and don't know what to do with your money, but this isn't it. You've got people getting tigets, lions, sharks.
You're that wealthy? Buy or build an animal sanctuary where you help with reviving endangered and exotic animal populations, you'll get to see all the exotic animals you want. Not in a friggin tank. They deserve to be in their natural environment and habitats.
Just wanted to vent that's all. It's funny and made my perspective on owning a snake very very different.
Tl;dr- A vent regarding people owning exotic animals as pets after a trip to the pet store made me feel bad over how the Anaconda's life is gonna be.
