Cat has urinary crystals?

My completely litter box trained (since he was a little baby) 7 month old kitten has suddenly started peeing outside the litter box. He’s peed in laundry, on our jackets, on a box of pet supplies sitting on the counter, on the counter, on the table…

He licks his genital area frequently, and walks around crying. It seems like he’s in pain. I took him to the vet yesterday, and they told me nothing was wrong with him, and that he’s doing it since he’s a boy. But he’s not marking, it’s straight up squatting and peeing. He’s being neutered in two weeks. I have another younger kitten who is 5 months, also not neutered yet (getting it done at the same time) and he’s not exhibiting this behavior.

Anyway. I looked at the urinalysis results on our online profile. It says he’s positive for urine crystals? I did some research online and it seems like some cats have them and they are okay. But combined with everything else, I feel like something is wrong.

I’ve become hypervigilant of the litter box, and I’ve also switched him to a urine health food. Any suggestions or comments? I’m afraid for my house, and I want him to feel better.
