So I guess I'll give some background before my question..
So, I was out of work for a month and a half back in December 2020 due to COVID cases rapidly increasing at my work and though we were doing weekly testing, I didn't want to risk putting myself or the associates I managed at risk. Just being on the safe side.
However, this put me in a financial bind. I only got 2 weeks of pay for quarantine pay, but otherwise, the LOA was unpaid. I got rental assistance from the state for my rent and was doing Instacart and Shipt to pay my utilities. I graduated college in December, attended the postponed ceremony in May. So, a few months after, the private student loans I had taken out to pay for my last two semesters kicked in. They want $500 a month. I also had minor credit card debt. But those student loans wrecked the work I had done on my credit score, bringing it down lower than it's ever been.
I've now set up a plan with the loan provider to get caught back up and have a more feasible payment option, but with my lease ending and my credit score needing work, I won't be able to rent a decent place. This brings me to my question about ESAs.
I have a female cat, Sandy. She's around 5-6 years old. She was about 1-2 when my then-bf and I adopted her from a former friend of mine. She's bonded to me and I to her. I have depression, anxiety, and PTSD (which is a new diagnosis that I am currently processing and working through). I need her around, she helps me a lot and I hope I help her too. So with my current shaky financial situation, my dad offered for me to live in his spare bedroom at his home and split the bills with him, which will help me free up money to put towards my debt and student loans, fixing my credit score. Problem is, his landlord has in the lease that no pets are allowed. At my current apartment, I had paid a deposit and pet rent before I knew that cats are also considered ESAs. I don't want to ask my mom to take her in or a friend take her in because I don't know how long it'll take to get back on my feet. Plus, I don't know what I'd do without her and how she'd be without me.
So, my question is, if I were to see my doctor who is well aware of my mental health issues, and get a note from them, can my dad's landlord refuse to allow my cat to be with me? I'm still trying to find a therapist that I like, so I'm reliant on my doctor at the moment. I don't know how any of this works, so I'm at a loss.
I just want to know what resources I have available before I move. If I have to live with my mom and have a 2 1/2 hour commute to work just so I can stay with my sweet girl, I'll do that. It's not a good option, but I'll do what it takes to stay with my cat.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help!
