Hey all! I'm gonna try to provide the full timeline with as many details as possible.
My girlfriend has had her cat since she was a kitten (now ~6 years old). She moved across the country with her cat one year ago (we moved in together). Everything was fine for the first month or so, then she started peeing in a corner of one of the rooms downstairs on the carpet. The problem persisted almost daily for a week, so she gets taken to the vet for all the routine blood work and tests. Everything comes back normal and she's a healthy kitty. At this point we assumed it was stress from such a big move. Following the advice of what we read online, we purchased those plugin cat pheromone diffuses and put them around the house (still use them to this day) and moved her food bowl to the offending corner. We got her a new cat tree as well so she can have a new place to call her own.
After moving her food to the original corner, she then chose a new corner upstairs to begin peeing in. During this time it seemed she was mostly spraying and not unloading her bladder. We continue to thoroughly clean the area using the recommended (Nature's Miracle Urine Destroyer) and eventually the problem stops for about 6 or 7 months. All was good.
A couple months ago she began peeing in the upstairs corner again. My girlfriend caught her about to do it one day and yelled at her. It appears she got the point that she wasn't allowed to go in that corner, so she chose yet another new corner upstairs. The problem persists intermittently for a couple of months.
Continuing to follow advice online, she got a new litter box just last week and it was placed in the new corner. She began using it immediately without any issues.
This morning we woke up to hearing scratches on the carpet upstairs. I go up and find that she is now pooping on the carpet right outside of the bathroom that her original litter box is in.
Throughout the entire ordeal, she continued to use her litter box and now uses both the new and the old box to go number 1 and 2 on a daily basis. This is brand new behavior and she has never pooped outside the box. Prior to moving across the country she never went pee outside of her box. She is still playful and cuddly.
Now we are at our wits end. What are the next steps we can take?
