What to Do With Mother's Old Cat When She Moves to Nursing Home

My mom has Alzheimer's disease and within the next couple of months she will be moving into a nursing home. The only homes open to her do not allow pets. My mom has an 18 year old cat. He's not in good health, but the health issues he has do not warrant putting him to sleep at this point. He'll likely die within a year though. Plus, my mom is super attached to him and if she knew that he was being put to sleep she would be devastated. Some people are advising me that I should just have him put down and then lie to her, telling her that I'm taking him home with me or that he's going to live with a relative. I don't know if I can stomach that.

I cannot take on another cat at this point (plus I live in another province and I don't think this cat would tolerate air travel), and none of my relatives are interested in taking the cat.

I'm being asked by my mom's health care providers (she's under the care of the public guardian), to make a decision in the matter and I don't know what the heck to do. Any advice for me on this terrible situation?
