Sorry for formatting I’m on mobile, but anyways. My boyfriend and I have a German Shepard/ Husky mix male that we got from the shelter. My boyfriend initially got the dog on his own but I was on board all the way for a shelter dog.
My boyfriend was told at the shelter that the dog was a very special case because he was kept in crate all during his puppy years and never interacted with other animals. The little interaction he did get was from an abusive owner and load ass children that would torment the dog. So overall not a good place for a puppy to grow and obviously that environment had a big effect on him.
Now considering this we still wanted him, he was only a year and half when we brought him home and figured that he could still be taught. My boyfriend trained him and taught him lots of stuff, he’s a very intelligent dog and a great problem solver so it wasn’t hard training him at home. The problem is when we try to go to the park.
When we go to the park it’s like everything we taught him goes out the door and he tries to escape from us, he wants to chase and greet every person or dog he sees. When he gets excited he pulls against his collar to the point where he hurts himself and starts crying. He will sometimes try biting whoever is holding the leash because he thinks it’s us hurting him.
When people see that the park they absolutely avoid us and we can’t seem to get him to even sit for us. We’ve tried bringing snacks and his favorite toy as a way to distract him and keep his attention on us but it just doesn’t work. It’s getting to the point where I can’t take the dog to park by myself because he’ll try to attack me if I try to hold him back.
Now I’ve mentioned to my boyfriend that maybe it’s time for a professional trainer. But he’s adamant that he can get the dog to behave at the park. I trust him but I just think a professional would know exactly what to do instead of us trying everything we read online and failing all the time.
So I just wanna know any tips or advice that we can take and put into place because we love this dog but we’re getting stressed over the obedience issue and we stopped taking him to the park because it’s so bad. So please be kind and give us any advice or just tell us if you think we need to go to a professional trainer at this point.
