New Kitten with existing Bourke Parakeet

Hi All,

We rescued a Bourke parakeet about a year ago when she flew onto my wife's shoulder when she was outside working. After unsuccessfully searching for the owner, we decided to adopt the bird. Flashforward a year, my daughter found a kitten outside that seem to be lost. We took him in for a day, but eventually found the owner. However, this spurred the family to consider a kitten (we had told our kids they could get a cat or dog "soon"). So, we adopted a 4 month old kitten that was rescued from a garbage bin when she was days old (I still can't believe anyone would do this). So, now we need to find a good long term plan to allow the parakeet and kitten to "co-exist". The kitten is very interested in the cage (a large stand alone cage on the ground that can't be toppled by the kitten, but could possibly be toppled by a full grown cat). I do not leave the kitten alone in the same room with the bird .

I've been trying to keep it as positive as I can. When the kitten touches the cage, I will move her away from the cage and say "leave it". However, this really hasn't been working. There are times when the kitten will ignore the bird for a long time, but the curiosity eventually returns. I tried to line the vertical face of the legs of the cage with foil, but this only worked for a day and then the kitten started playing with the foil.

I'm thinking about using the spray bottle next, but wasn't sure if this would be the best way of dealing with the issue.

I did take the bird out of the cage while my wife was holding the cage in an attempt to get the kitten use to the other "family member" and not "prey", but I am not sure if this is a good plan.

I would really hate to "exile" the bird from the main living space (an open kitchen/dining room area), but I could put her in an adjacent room (family/home theater room) that would allow me to close the door. Or, I could move the bird to the adjacent room whenever I leave the house or go to bed. Right now, I have the kitten in a "safe room" (laundry room) during his adjustment period.

Any ideas or tips?

Thanks
