Looking to hear others experiences with relinquishing their pet

This has been killing me. We’ve had our cat for about 1.5, almost 2 years now. He’s nearly 3. For the majority of that time, we have been absolutely struggling with him. He was a stray and has severe food aggression and just plain aggression always. He has gashed up our legs and arms unprovoked more times than I can count. We’ve been working with our vet to try and change his behavior but it’s been going no where. I love my cat, but my anxiety has been through the roof since we got him. I’m going to the vet again next week to see what our options are in terms of other treatments but if there is nothing left, I don’t know how I can keep him. I’m miserable and I feel he is too and nothing I do is making it any better. I’ve been a mess about this. I’m just hoping to hear others opinions and experiences in a non judgmental manner if possible. I just want to know that others, both owners and the pets, have come out better as a result of relinquishing their pets for whatever reason.
