Is it ethical to have an indoor/outdoor cat?

I truly think that cats are the happiest when they have a territory to roam and a cozy home to come home too. I know a cat can be happy if you give it enough entertainment in a home, but when you see a cat outside in a place where it’s mastered it’s boundary’s and can run and play where ever it pleases with complete freedom, it seems the most content. I would feel like a monster for keeping it imprisoned for lack of a better word.

On the other hand there are so many dangers, cars, coyotes, etc. It feels like too much risk.

Be but if I was a cat I’d risk those things to have a natural fulfilling life, I guess? I know that’s anthropomorphizing them but, I don’t know it feels like most only indoor cats yearn more.

So now that I live alone and have complete control over my own cat. (I don’t have one yet but will most likely adopt one in the future) I’m conflicted on the keeping it a strictly indoor cat or and indoor/outdoor cat. I live in a fairly normal American suburb so not the worst but not the best.

What’s your thoughts?
