Would you spend 6k on your cat? I’m about to.

I’m just wondering how much people would spend on medical treatment for their pets?

Our cat is about 5 years old and he is the best kitty ever. He is so loving and is the best boi. He sleeps by my face or my husbands face every night and is such a snuggler!!!! He is positive for feline leukemia but is healthy otherwise and stays indoors. He does have a higher risk of infections but we take good care of him so he could still live to be 10-15 years old even with his underlying condition.

Last night we took him to an emergency vet because he was crying and clearly in pain and didn’t eat dinner. Turns out he has stones in his bladder and one of them was blocking his urethra so that’s why he was in pain and couldn’t pee. Unblocking the stones, surgery to remove the stones still in his bladder, and the other random vet bills will put the total at about 6k. We have some money saved up to put down and then they also have a zero interest for 6 months care card that we will use to pay the rest of it off over the course of the next 6 months.

Once the surgery is done, he will have to go on a special diet that will reduce the risk of the stones returning, and we will watch his hydration better. Even so, there is a 30% chance the stones will return and it would be the same thing again... I don’t know what we would do if that happens. But that also means there is a 70% chance he will be fine and could live another 5-10 years even with his feline leukemia.

My husband and I make okay earnings but we aren’t amazingly well off. 6k is over the amount we make in one month combined. We were planning on a trip to Mexico in February which we have called off.

I’m just wondering how many other people would do this? How many people would spend this much on their cat, especially since there is a 30% chance it would come back. He is literally the best boi and the best cat ever and we love him so much!
