So, my parents adopted a bonded pair of older dachshunds back in October of 2019, both are typically chill, however, one of them we named Rusty, has an obsession with food to the point where he'll eat just about anything and will intentionally get in your way if he thinks you have food. The place we adopted him and the other dog, Willie, from did say the old owners let them get away with a lot, Rusty's food habit being one of them. We've been slowly trying to get him to see just nabbing for food isn't good, it both is and isn't working. What's bringing me to post this is earlier today, my mom was giving them both treats for going outside (which we did with all our previous dogs when they did their business) and my mom had the treats in her hand, Rusty came in first and while my mom was trying to get the other dog in, Rusty got impatient and jumped up her leg and snapped at her hand knowing the treat was in it, he nipped her but (thankfully) didn't draw blood. Now my mom's nervous around Rusty thinking he'll do something bad to her if he thinks she has food, even if she doesn't. My folks got these dogs for a reason, they like lap dogs, but Rusty's food obsession might end up breaking that bond one day and I'm afraid my mom might do something she'll regret to Rusty, or worst case scenario, me or my dad. I've googled a bunch of different pages on what to do with food obsessed dogs but I'm not sure what else we can do. Do we just keep working with Rusty to hopefully break him of this bad habit or should we just suck it up and get a professional dog trainer? All three of us like these two dogs but we don't want to give them up. (Picture of puppers for reference)
