My cat is not fond of my dog at all

I got my cat a like 8 weeks or so old in April 2019. My mom got a pitbull puppy (also a couple weeks old) in about August/September 2019. We lived in a smaller sized house and kept them separated for a bit before letting the cat get close to the dog and whatnot.

We moved into an apartment a couple months ago and I don’t think there’s every been a moment where my cat has been calm around the dog. He’s a very playful dog and loves chasing and running around and being you know, a dog. My cat on the other hand is pretty chill except for late at night when he acts like a weirdo.

I want them to coexist and be able to understand boundaries but it just isn’t happening. My cat is constantly swatting and hissing and even growling at the dog and he just doesn’t seem to get it. He thinks it’s playtime and he jumps on the couch and chases and corners the cat and we have to get him to move away. I don’t even think I can watch a full episode of a tv show without having to pause to get the dog from cornering the cat.

Do you think this is a phase with the dog seeing as he’s only about 7 months and the cat is approaching a year, or their personalities don’t match and it’ll be like this forever?

My cat also has an issue with aggression. I sometimes can’t even rub his head without him suddenly biting me and wanting to scratch. Maybe it’s an issue of discipline for both animals. Any advice?

TL;DR: 7 month old pit doesn’t get the hint that the nearly year old cat does not want to play with him.
