How can I help a grieving friend

My classmate was with me when I found out my mom had cancer. He held my hand, let me cry, and did the best he could to console me. He has forever earned a special place in my heart. Today he was trying to leave class and I jokingly was blocking the door when he tried to leave. He asked me if he could have a hug and I gave him one and asked if he was ok, noticing something was off as he’s a very quiet person who mostly keeps to himself in school. He told me his cat, and best friend of 16 years has to be put down today. I had a moment where I of course sputtered out I’m so sorry and I made him give me another hug because I truly lacked the words to comfort him. So here I am asking reddit how I can help my friend. Do I get him drunk, or send him some good poetry, leave him to grieve in peace?? I know what it’s like to lose your best friend because I lost my therapy dog who literally saved me from myself a few years ago and I still cry about it to this day. I never talked to anyone about how much it hurt me and I don’t want my classmate to go through it alone. I made sure he had a ride and someone to go with him and he did. Open to suggestions, if anything at all thanks for reading.
