I am a big cat lover but have been too responsible to get a cat since graduating college three years ago, because I wanted to wait until I knew I'd be living somewhere longterm where it'd be easy to find pet-friendly housing. The idea of adopting a cat and then needing to give it up is just so painful to me, I have zero intention of ever surrendering one of my pets. Now that I've been accepted into grad school, I know that I'll be moving across the country to a city where I can easily have a cat, and I'll be living there for at least 5 years. So, I can finally start planning to adopt again.
I really want to adopt this bonded pair that I saw on the animal shelter website. I've always planned on getting two cats so they'll have each other to keep company. One of them has a torn ear and they are both really sweet middle-aged cats. I have a lot of savings from working the last three years so even on a grad student stipend I know I can afford to take care of any medical bills that might come up.
But, I know that moving cats across the country is traumatic. I have several friends who have done this (the academia life is pretty nomadic) and it sounds like the cat hates the whole trip but after a few weeks in the new home they settle in and get over it and go back to being happy, well-loved kitties. So, is it terrible of me to adopt these cats knowing that in four months I'll move them? I know they won't like it, but I don't know how bad it is.
Reddit, what do you think?
