So I took in a foster dog five days ago. The rescuers told me that she was good with cats but hates dogs. This suited me as I have no dogs but three cats. They kept the dog away from the other dogs in the shelter and in the room with the cats (the cats were in cages).
Turns out the dog hates cats. At least hates cats when they are in freely walking in territory she claims as her own (I think).
I’ve kept the dog in the back part of my house, with garden access and my cats are roaming around the rest of the house freely. I have allowed the cats and dog to see each other and interact briefly through a screen door. I’ve allowed the dog in the house when the cats have been shut away in another room to get both lots familiar with each other scents etc.
Yesterday as I was opening the door to the back part of the house the dog rushed past me in a frenzy and went straight for the cats. I managed to get her away but it was difficult. But this has happened three times now. This is my first experience with a dog and I don’t want to give up on it yet but what can I do as I honestly have no idea.
Please help! Thank you.
