Cat is probably dying, but not in pain.

Please don't be a jerk in the comments. I've taken him to our normal vet on Sat and the Emergency vet on Sun.

My cat is probably dying. I'm writing this post as he lays in my lap.

He doesn't seem to be in pain. That was also the vet's assessment. Something is wrong with the part of his brain that controls balance. If we did an MRI, which would require full anaesthesia, we might know more. There's a small chance it would be something treatable. Most likely there's nothing we could do.

When he walks or we carry him, he gets nauseous. This makes him drool uncontrollably. That's probably why he stopped eating. And his weight was already low because he is pretty picky and was just recovering from an acute spell of a chronic illness.

So, he's probably dying. But we don't think he's in pain. I left him in a room with food for a bit this afternoon (have to lock him up because our other cat is a food vacuum). Came back and he was waiting by the door. I sat down in the room and he stumbled over to me after 30 min or an hour. I put him on my lap, and he's been there ever since.

He won't eat, so there isn't anything we can really do. We've been applying a topical treatment that might or might not stimulate his appetite.

But he's probably dying. At 4 or 5 or 6. I don't know. We adopted him as a young adult two years ago.

While he's enjoying my lap or still stumbling over to sunny rugs, I'll just keep hanging out with him. It's not clear when to make a judgement call on putting him down. I wish I could ask him. But he's still social, so I think he is choosing to still live for now. That was the vet's advice. Just see if he's still responsive and enjoying things he enjoys.

This is really tough.
