People with dogs that use their yard for playing with them outside and letting them out to poop/pee in between walks, how do you manage fertilizing your lawn without putting your dog's health at risk?

I've learned to live with a weedy lawn, but there is a part of me that wouldn't mind spraying if it was possible without harming my pup.
