How do I know it’s time to trim my cat’s claws?

It’s my first time owning a cat as an adult and all the cats my family has ever owned had their front paws declawed, so I’m new to claw care. My cat Fergus has a scratching post that he uses regularly, but I can also feel his little claws brushing me when he snuggles. Is this a sign that I should cut them? Is he just being a little careless and grippy? Can I chicken out and let the vet tech deal with it when it’s time for his annual vaccines?

He recently turned one and we’ve had him since he was a baby. He’s okay with us touching his paws, but he may change his mind if we hold a nail clipper. Any advice?
