So my dog has a diaphragmatic hernia, but no symptoms from it, what should I do?

Hi,

My 2 1/2 year old beagle/jack russell mix has a diaphragmatic hernia that was found last year when we adopted him from a shelter. He also had heart worms at the time. He's a happy, healthy pup otherwise, and did the slow kill method to get rid of the heartworms over the last year.

But now a year later, I'm wondering if I need to get his hernia fixed? The vet said at the time to just monitor it and if has no symptoms or outward signs of discomfort from it, then it can wait. And they would have to refer me to a surgical center anyways to get it fixed.

So I'm wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation, or has some insight. He also needs to be neutered, but I was waiting on that until he was heartworm free as well. But now I need to do it as his marking is out of control...

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas you can offer!
