I need advice!
My boyfriend and I have been close for a long time and we’re childhood friends! I’ve known him for about the time period he’s had his cat, Snickers. I’ve rarely ever been to his house because I have severe allergies toward his mainecoon mixed cat. He used to be confined to his basement and that was fine, I’d stay in the areas he wasn’t allowed to be in (until his dog recently passed on and now the cat is allowed to move throughout the house freely). Now I’m terrified of going over to his house, and truthfully I have never been a fan of cats. My boyfriend is also aware Snickers and I despise each other.
I’ve had severe allergies all my life, and my symptoms range from; itchy/red eyes, runny nose, throat will swell, wheezing, tight chest, hives on face/neck/anywhere contact is made by something that has touched the cat or had contact with something that touched the cat. In other words, it’s very severe and my boyfriend is fully aware of how serious it is, as well as my deathly fear of cats.
I know the bond between owner and pet more than he knows. I’ve had countless pets/family members (no feline/cats) growing up until this point. I don’t expect him to choose between me and Snickers, but, we have been discussing moving in together at some point in the near future, and him and snickers are clearly very close. But, I can’t live with a cat. I can’t take pills or meds because I choke easily and my metabolism fights off almost EVERYTHING I put into my body. I’ve tried creams and oils recommended by my doctor, that hasn’t worked either. We’ve tried spraying down and throwing his clothes in the laundry but ANY dandruff or saliva left will still effect me. I’ve tried never going into his home, but I recently discovered that his cat goes into his room while he’s asleep and rubs against him and his clothes, so when he sees me and touches me, I break out and face my symptoms. At this point I’m terrified of even touching my boyfriends shirt, arm, or anything that could’ve been in contact with Snickers.
What do I do? He can’t get rid of snickers, but we also want a future together where we’re both happy. We’ve run out of ideas.
