Ratty owners: How do you repel mice infestations?

Old home and last year before I had ratties, we had a major mouse issue but got it under control. This year they have already begin their attack on our line of defenses. I really want to stick to a humane method and prefer no kill as much as possible, especially now that O have 4 ratties. I keep seeing one particular guy taking advantage of the ratty food that either gets flung to the floor and I am particularly worried about them actually getting into the food bags (and hay bin as I also have a rabbit.) and soiling and contaminating them. While they are kept in a relatively safe spot , i am also worried that the ratty cages may attract them even more and definitely concerned that they make contact with them and cause injury.

While the rats are a lot bigger and likely to win against a invading mouse, injury, infection, and disease is still a major issue to me and that has been also taken into consideration when trying to deter them. This dang mouse runs along the wall, to the rat cage, snatches whatever food or debris it can find and then runs on back. It does this for a while. I am sure it is thinking something along the lines of, "hey! it is almost like this food is catered specifically to critters like me! Awesome!"

Should I use scented oil around the food bags and storage? I can move it to somewhere away from the caging so it doesn't bother the rattos.

I am also concerned if the rats somehow escape, as they have done before (clever dooders!) and may run into the mice or get into any repellants i put down or live traps.

The house is quite old and there are a lot of places to seal up that will be difficult. Large home, many hiding spots to go. I have seen what poison does to mice and id rather stay away from that and the traditional traps because I also have two dogs and two cats. Im at a loss.

So my question is this - How do you rat owners protect against mice/rat infestations in your home? What preventative measures do you take to further prevent mice for the next year?

I am in upstate NY and it is cooling down, so they are starting to show up more frequently.
