Help! One cat started growling and hissing at the other. They were fine this morning. I don’t want them to hurt each other.

I have two cats, both boys. One is almost 3 named Rocky and the other just turned 1 named Ferdinand. The older one is neutered but because of COVID we haven’t been able to get our other cat neutered yet. Idk if this is relevant but idk if it would have something to do with this.

Rocky has a lot of anxiety when we adopted him. He would randomly bite at and scratch us. Since we got Ferdinand last December, however, he’s been much more calm and snuggly. He’s always been so affectionate towards Ferdinand, and loves to snuggle, groom, and play with him. Occasionally they’ll hiss at one another a little but that’s normal cat stuff.

Tonight though was different. Rocky wasn’t just hissing at Ferdinand, he was growling, spitting, baring his teeth. He didn’t stop. They were fine earlier today and later when I got home from work. I went to refill their automatic feeder (Rocky had been refusing to eat if we weren’t there and would wake us up in the middle of the night for food, and Ferdinand would try to scavenge food all the time, so structure was better for them) before mealtime and Rocky started being so aggressive and angry towards Ferdinand. Idk what he would have done if I hadn’t separated them and taken Ferdinand to my room.

My fiancé has also been away for work the last few days. He’s Rocky’s favorite, so he might be missing him too. Still, this sort of behavior has never happened before for Rocky.

I’m afraid that when I put them together again they might hurt each other, that I might have to choose between them, that Rocky’s anxious again and I’ve lost the snuggle ham he’s become, that my boys don’t love each other anymore, that all the snuggles and kisses are gone.
