Can two cats share a bed?

My family currently has one adult cat that we adopted as a stray (around 6 years old). Due to heavy allergies, he isn't allowed in most of the house. During the day we let him into the garden and he eats/sleeps in a small laundry room. (I understand having outdoor cats is not ideal, but this arrangement works for us as he doesn't roam much and always comes inside for dinner at night.)

There is another stray cat we are thinking of adopting (around 1 year old). He is friendly with both us and our current cat - he allows us to pat/hold him and we've spotted the two cats playing/grooming each other.

The issue is that the laundry is very small - they would need to share a bed and litterbox. The limited territory seems like it would cause conflict, but is it possible this would be mitigated by the fact that they already get along well and would have access to a larger outdoor space? They would only be sleeping/eating inside.

The alternative here would be sending him to a shelter and hoping someone else can care for him - we are quite attached to him, but certainly won't keep him if the living arrangement isn't suitable.

Thanks for reading and for any advice you can offer!
