Hi there! My wife and I rescued our dog Kewpie from an animal hoarder a few months ago. She just turned 2 years old and she's been with us for almost 3 months. She's a fantastic dog but we've been struggling to figure out how to feed her.
For context, according to the people who used to own her, they fed her boiled beef and vegetables. However, I don't think that's entirely true and we think that she was probably fed scraps and other table food. During our first few visits, they also fed her sliced bread as treats.
Her previous owners didn't care for her much and would pretty much have their nannies take care of her. I've seen them feed her and it looked like she was mostly fed leftovers from human meals.
She often sits by our table while we're having dinner and any time we're not looking, she quickly sneaks licks or bites of anything that's fallen off a plate.
Before we got her, we bought a 12.2kg bag of high quality dry food. We tried feeding her that at first and she absolutely did not take to it. She would ignore the dry food and refused to eat. After 2 days, we got nervous that she would start starving so we bought her a few pouches of store-bought wet food. She loved that and ate it without second-guessing. We tried mixing the wet food with the dry food but she would ultimately ignore the kibble. However, we decided that it was too expensive to feed her that.
After a while, we tried out cooking her food ourselves because it would be cheaper than buying wet food. I would make her boiled chicken meat and organs with carrots and broccoli which she also loved. Again, whenever we would mix this with kibble, she would ignore the kibble and eat around it.
Right now we've been ordering from this local wet food brand that's been great. They make a type of pate that's made of beef, chicken, squash, and other veggies. When we mix it with her kibble, she eats everything in her bowl. However, this brand is quite expensive. Right now, my wife and I have really busy schedules so it's hard to find the time to consistently make her food ourselves. We really want to transition her towards eating dry food alone.
What advice would you have to get her to eat kibble on its own?
tl;dr: Our dog refuses to eat kibble on its own and will only eat it mixed with purchased wet food. Buying wet food is too expensive and we don't have the time to cook her food ourselves.
