What do I do with what seemed like an egg?

I am not sure if this is an appropriate platform to ask this question, but I am looking for help and guidance:

I live on the 2nd (top) floor of my apartment building. There is an open-air staircase serving my apartment and the apartment next door. While walking down the stairs to go to work today, I almost stepped on what seemed like a white egg. I left it in a safe corner on the stairs hoping that the parents of the egg would come back for it. When I came home tonight, the egg was still there. What do I do?

I have spotted a couple of turtle doves frequenting my front door. They have been making more noise recently than usual. Is it possible that the white, oval egg is a turtle dove egg? I feel stuck in a damn-if-I-do, damn-if-I-don't situation: I feel sorry leaving the egg out to die alone, even though I wish the parents would take back the egg. But, I do not want to take on the responsibility of incubating and raising a bird, only to have the bird die on me later on (because I have zero experience caring for a pet).
