Owning pets while working a full time job

I grew up with animals. Cats and dogs. Now I live on my own and 4 days a week, I am gone for 13 hours a day for work.

I miss not having a pet. Would it be wrong or cruel to have a pet at home alone for that long a day? I realize a cat would be better off but I’m more of a dog person. I wouldn’t want to lock it in a cage. Would it be cruel to leave a dog alone for 13 hours a day/4 days a week?
