Will my new(traumatized) cat and dog ever get along?

Backstory: So my boyfriend is trying to take in his dad's cat(he hasn't been taking care of him and just doesn't care for the cat much) but this cat has trauma from living with large dogs. He was originally my boyfriend's friends roommates cat but his pitbull mix would constantly try to hump him and just was a menace. We gave the kitty to his father so he would be safer, and he WAS safer there but he got almost zero attention and his litter only got changed when i did it (FIL's house also got peed all over cause of this) so we took him in ourselves. However we have 2 cats already and a small dog...

So the cats been in our kitchen as a Basecamp for 2 or 3 days now, when we first brought him home we didn't realize he would be scared of my 15 lb dachshund but he was and he slapped her a couple times when she found a couple of food crumbs on the floor 😿 since then we've been trying to keep them separate but i got attacked yesterday while letting her outside. She HAS to pass by him to get outside to potty but he only lets it happen when I carry her. He's being super territorial of the floor and he has vertical space (kitchen chairs, table, counter, there's storage shelves for him to climb, there's even a half opened closet my other cats love sleeping in) but he isn't a good climber, he just seems like kind of a floor cat. He's okay with the dog when she's in someone's arms, maybe he'll hiss if she looks at him too hard but is not attacking. But the SECOND the dog is on the ground he gets offensive.. yesterday he leaped between my legs and started hitting her, i had to grab him and he swung around, sliced my arm up. My dog hasn't actually been hurt yet but I'm so worried for her, she's basically defenseless and she's also scared of pitbulls so i never even thought she would intimidate him.

Also we've barely let the cats get close to each other but we room swap once or twice a day and that seems to be going better, yesterday they didn't even hiss at each other in passing. But do you guys think there's actually hope for the cat and dog together? He COULD go back but it would break my boyfriend's heart, he says his dad locks the cat out of his room and ignores him and he's just the cuddliest cat ever...
