I (23 F) grew up with cats and love them. I want to have a cat of my own, but I’m aware that I’m not financially stable to adopt a cat, plus I’m still renting and moving once every few years when the rent gets to expensive, which can be a hassle for me and stressful for the cat.
I decided to sign up for fostering and received a lovely 10 year old male cat who has spent his entire life in a research lab. I’m his first human and first home. He’s a perfect cat in anyway: doesn’t hide, confident, comes when called, follows me around yet still independent, litter trained, listens very well, cuddly, playful but also calm, very tolerant too. The initial plan was for me to care for him for 1-3 months, but I started breaking out in hives, stuffy and runny nose, teary and swollen eyes, itchy and scratch throat. These are the symptoms although I’m already taking 360g of antihistamine daily for my hay fever. It broke my heart to do this to him as I’ve had him for 3 days only and he just got comfortable.
I talked to the shelter and they said they could take him back. I’m thinking of seeing a doctor to get diagnosed and find a way to cope, but I also want to take the easy way and agree for the shelter to take him back. If so, I’ll make sure the cat gets to keep his favourite toy and I’ll donate all the things I bought for this cat to the shelter. Would I be the asshole for choosing the easy way that is much more stressful for the cat?
