Do you train your pets or just let them be?

I’m going to be a first time cat parent. I have fostered and sat some cats before, but never had one of my own. So it’s the first time.

Now I know cats can’t be trained, but you can still enforce some boundaries right? As an example: I’m a very light sleeper, and I don’t want my cat to be running and jumping all over me when I sleep at night. I get very cranky if I haven’t had a good night’s sleep. Combine it with me making my schedule a lot busier, it just doesn’t make sense to compromise on sleep.

One of my friends has strict “not letting cats in the bedroom” while sleeping policy, but others, like my ex, have had them (two cats and a dog) around the entire time. Waking up in the middle of the night and then not being able to sleep for hours is something they were personally ok with. There was also no dog training at all.

So I’m curious — what school of thought are you with? How do you reinforce boundaries pets? Are you for or against training your pets?
