Hello Reddit, have a question for all the cat experts regarding the appropriate feeding schedule for a cat. I adopted her off the street around the time when she was probably 6-8 months. She is now about 1.5 - 2 years old, neutered and fed dry food.
As a street cat she is quite greedy. I used to have a cat a few years ago that I would feed one a day and he would ration his food. Even if I left him alone for a day or two I would just provide and food and he would be okay. My current cat not only starts annoying me to feed her around feeding times, if I put out food she will eat all of it.
Initially I was feeding her 18 grams per meal, 3 times a day (730 am, 330 pm, 1130 pm).
I recently read that adult cats should be fed twice a day. Also because of my work schedule her 330 pm sometimes gets interrupted so I started feeding her twice a day - 36 grams at 730 am and 18 grams at 1130 pm.
My hope is she starts rationing her morning meal but for the past two days she has eaten it all.
My questions are: 1) is her current schedule okay? 2) is it okay to do 36/18 grams or is it better to do two equal sized meals like 27 grams each (since cats probably don’t have a sense of time or scale maybe she doesn’t like the inconsistency ? - not sure about cat psychology)
Any help would be appreciated. I want her to be happy and healthy.
