My family and I have applied to adopt this kitten from a rescue, he’s four months old. We are going to meet him on Sunday at the adoption event to see if he’s a good fit or not, or if we connect well. The rescue said the little dude is great with both cats and dogs. We have a two year old German Shepherd, which is why I’m a bit nervous. Because of size and how she’d react. I’ve been reading on proper ways to slowly introduce a kitten or cat to your dog to prepare myself, but I still can’t help but be scared lol.
She has been around cats before, but not many. The first time she was around a cat was when we were on vacation a few months ago (followed safety guidelines) and our dogsitter had a foster kitten. She had no aggressive intent towards the cat, she was just extremely curious. She got a little too close for the kitty’s comfort though and the cat wacked her with its paw and she was cautious and hesitant around the kitten the rest of the time lol.
The second time was just while we were on a walk and some person was out front in their backyard with their cat and we were just walking by. But I don’t know, I feel like it’s a vastly different situation to introduce a cat to a dog at home. I imagine that it would be very stressful so I’m a bit stressed about introduction...
If anyone has any advice, I’d love to hear some :) and also, how long did it take for you to introduce them & how long did it take for them to get used to one another?
edit: I also want to add a reason I’m a bit anxious about this is because of how it’s suggested that their first face-to-face should be separate, such as being able to see each other between a gate or screen door. Luna (our GSD) met part of our family’s new puppy last weekend for the first time while they were both in crates. Family wasn’t ready for them to meet outside of the crates yet though, so our father offered to bring Luna outside so the puppy could roam for a bit. Luna didn’t like that he was inside while she had to be outside where she could see him. Not aggressive barks, but she has a very loud bark. She wanted to meet the dog which is why she was barking, but because she was outside she was not happy since the puppy wasn’t with her. Or, at least, that’s what I’m assuming. But I know it wasn’t an aggressive bark regardless. But because of the barking, I’m worried she’d bark at the kitten if she was separated like that? Does anyone have similar experience with this and what you did to make the introduction process easier?
