My dog attacked my kitten, she is likely going to lose her eye. Depressed and don't know where else to post.. kind of just need to vent

Long post, sorry :\

I've had my dog since he was a puppy 9 weeks old. He's a Norwegian Elkhound/Border Collie mix. He's turning 7 years old in 2 months. He has always been more of a companion dog if anything. Has to follow me everywhere, extremely smart, knows lots of tricks, he is basically my sidekick. Wherever I go he goes. Hell I even got my first tattoo which is his paw print.

He hasn't really had many issues with other animals but he also just likes to do his own thing. At dog daycare years ago he used to only play every once in a while and the only couple scuffles he's been in were provoked by another dog. He usually just liked to keep to himself. My parents own many dogs he never cared for, and have had a couple cats over the years and he's never went after them. He would stare at them like he was curious but never chased or tried anything. If they were next to them he didn't do anything. My old roommates had a cat he just avoided and my ex gf had a cat he didn't care for either. While on a leash he can be iffy.. seems a little protective not sure why, but never had any incidents. He is also slightly food aggressive? Has never attacked anything near his food but will let out a little growl if they get near it (other animals only not people). Same if he has a bone. Other than that not much aggression.

I've been living on my own for about 6 months and decided I've always wanted a cat as well, and adoption is free this month, so now would be a great time. My parents said if for some reason it didn't work out they would take her so no matter what she has a forever home. I felt bad leaving for work everyday with my dog being home alone for 8-10 hours. A cat could keep him company. I figured a kitten would be great.. it would grow up with my dog and I felt my dog would be far more welcoming with a kitten. Cats also tend to themselves most the time so it isn't as much upkeep as a dog with exercising and letting them out and such. So I adopted a kitten and fell in love immediately. Was hoping they would end up being good buds and at worse they would both just do their own thing.. tonight that all changed.

For the first 4 or 5 days the kitten and dog didn't meet. I kept the kitten in a separate room. The dog would sniff under the door a lot and was curious but eventually just kind of didn't care. Then I let them meet. Held the cat and showed the dog. She hissed and seemed a little scared (seemed normal) and the dog was super intrigued. After a couple days of easing into it they seemed fine. The dog kept a close eye on the kitten always wondering what she was up to but never showed signs of being mad. No back fur up or teeth showing like he normally does if bothered. The kitten eventually began following the dog and wanting to pal around with him. She really liked him. He didn't really care for her but didn't seem bothered.

One time she got near his food and he let out a little growl. No teeth showing or anything more of just a grunt. I told him it was okay and to stop/relax and he did. She sniffed around his food and even tried to eat some and nothing came of it. This was the most aggression he had shown toward the kitten. For the next few days I let the kitten run freely, but I put the dogs food up just in case since I wasn't always by the food to watch.

Well tonight when I got home from work I let the dog outside and went and got the kitten. When I'm gone I keep them separated just to be safe. After letting the dog in I put the kitten down. Stupid me didn't even think about the dogs food being there because they had been fine. I didn't see what happened but she happened to either go near his food bowl or tried to eat his food. In an instant he has the kitten in his mouth, shakes her once, and drops her. I yell at him and he runs. She starts running under the kitchen table.. BLOOD IS DRIPPING EVERYWHERE. Surprisingly she hardly made noise. I get under the table and get a hold of her.. her eye is a giant blood bubble. She's meowing every once in a while which is her usual but doesn't seem to even know what happened. Doesn't seem in pain but damn it looked awful.

Now I have a mix of emotions as I'm running her to the emergency vet. I'm so freaking mad at my dog, even though I'm not sure I really should be, I'm so upset for my poor kitten, and I'm feeling EXTREME guilt. I adopted this stray to rescue it and now it's eye is probably destroyed. Can't help but break down in tears. Even at the vet I'm in tears and crying here and there.. AND I'M A 30 YEAR OLD MAN. This really hit me hard. The 3 other people waiting were woman looking fine yet here I am trying to hold myself together. They ended up saying the kitten was somehow taking it extremely well for how bad it was.. definitely the stronger one of us two lol.

They are keeping her overnight. I told them that just by looking at it I'm like 90% sure she's going to lose her eye and feel awful. They told me they aren't sure yet because of the swelling but the way they worded things I'm pretty sure they just didn't want to break my heart telling me she will lose it. Saying things like she won't even know considering she's a kitten, she will grow up to it being "normal". They told me they can do surgery to take it out if it comes to that. I will be amazed if she doesn't need it. Vet bill was $900, and that's the bare minimum. They told me it can go up to $1900 depending on how long she needs to stay.. and that's NOT including surgery.

Anyways sorry for the long post. Just really heartbroken right now and had to get it out somewhere. I really screwed up and wish I could turn back time. It's going to be hard to explain to all my friends that know I got a kitten what happened to her. I felt I was her guardian and let her down big time. Haven't been this torn up in a while.

The one thing about fleas

I hate fleas. I hate they’re in my house. They’re only in my house because of a dog i got paid to watch which we told the owner he had fleas. Now my cats have fleas and we’re treating the whole place and them. But the one GOOD THING that has happened because of these little bastards, my cat who has trust issues and has been abused, is now fully trusting of me to not hurt her. She lets me mess with her face and scrub it and hold her head while I comb her. She’s still terrified of baths, but she isn’t surprised at me touching her while she sleeps near or on me. Or while I mess with her paws and legs and face and stomach, she’s not scared of me. She trusts me and I love her

Fleas :/

My backyard now has fleas due to my neighbors cats always running loose into our yard which has led to the fleas getting on my dog. Any suggestions on how to get rid of the fleas on my dog and backyard?

Moving out of a house with fleas

In my parents house we have two dogs and one cat. I’m moving out of my parents house in one month and taking the cat with me. We have struggled with cycles of fleas over the past few years. This is because when we do have fleas my parents treat the problem half ass and are too lazy to make an effort to officially eliminate the problem. They’ll be “gone” for a few months to a year, but then come back. Currently, I’ve seen a flea in the past week and my pets have been itching, but my parents are denying it’s a problem. Since my parents probably won’t ever successfully eliminate the fleas completely, what is the best way to make sure my cat is flea/egg free when I move into my own place? I can not afford to take this problem with me and I need to make sure my cat is clean before I move.

Leaving for college soon and worried about my cat feeling abandoned

Basically what the title suggests. I live with my grandmother, we unexpectedly got a kitten at the beginning of the summer. She has really taken to me. Like, she actually suckles on my shirt every night. I never expected her to be this way with me. I am leaving for college about 45 minutes away from my house. I’ll be living in an apartment but I unfortunately can not take her. I just want to make this as easy as possible for her. I will probably be coming home about once a month (on weekends.) Are there any easy tips or tricks to make it easier on her? I don’t want her to feel abandoned by me and I don’t want her to think I’m never coming back.

Is it right to ask the vet to put my dog down?

I have an 8 year old boxer. He suddenly couldnt walk properly so the vet decided to do xrays. He found spondylosis of the spine so prescribed some prednisone for the inflammation. Before this, my dog was eating less and 2 days before i brought him to the vet, he didnt want to eat. He was losing a lot of weight. Now, he hasnt been eating at all. Hes very skinny. The vet recommended getting an ultrasound but I called the facilities that he recommended and they said I would be spending over 1000 dollars and depending on the situation, over 2000. I just dont have the money for that. My dog is very skinny now and doesnt want to eat anything. The blood tests were normal for him. Do you think its right to ask the vet to put my dog down? If i had the funds to get the ultrasound, i would. I just dont want him to suffer anymore. Its been a hard day emotionally.

My family keep letting my cat out and I do t know what to do to prevent him from escaping

My mom, brother and sister are careless when letting the dogs out or going in and out in general. I spend 3 hours so far tonight looking for my indoor cat because he keeps running outside. This had happen twice in the past 3 days and I’m out till 1am looking for him. I don’t know what to do to keep him inside. I yell at everyone and they still let him slip past them. Is there a school collar for cats or something. He doesn’t have shots because he isn’t supposed to go outside. I’m probably gonna get him them Incase though. Looking for any options. He doesn’t come when called and runs away from me till he is ready to come in and still it’s hard to catch him outside. He only lets me pick him up inside and only wants attention inside

Put bunny down. Hope it was the right choice

We put our bunny down after he developed a head tilt. We took him to the vet and got him meds for it but it seemed like he got much worse with treatment. He bit the syringes. He stopped eating treats and hard food. Only ate small amounts of hay. He stopped cleaning himself and barely had any ballence. Head was completing sideways. The vet told us in his personal opinion putting him down would be the best course of action. I hate that we did it. Before we did it we brought him out in the grass. He seemed happy. Nuzzled up against us. We took pictures with him then brought him back in. I can't stop thinking he could have gotten better. Goddamn so I miss that bunny.

My dogs were attacked on our walk. What can I do to better prepare should it happen next time?

So I was walking in my neighborhood and there was a guy in his garage chilling with his two french bulldogs. They didn’t have any restraints and charged straight for my dogs ignoring all calls from their owner.

My dogs were not hurt, and they’re medium small so I managed to pick them both up whilst having two frenchies jumping on me to bite them.

This is the first time it has happened to me and while the situation was handled, I was a little shocked and felt very bad for my dogs. But what could I have done if they were bigger dogs? What am I allowed to do? Like yes duh, you try your best to separate the dogs. But if it really comes down to the fact another dog is trying to kill your own, what are my legal options of protection? Hit em with a stick? Low volt tazer? Am I allowed to kick their dog??

I would never in a million years want to hurt animals, but if some animal is coming after my babies, I would like to go to town and kick some ass.

My dog got hit

Earlier today, my dog got hit by a car. Don’t worry, he’s fine, but he broke his femur. Really bad. It snapped and then shifted. We took him to the vet ASAP. I was gonna take him for a walk but he got so excited that he slipped his collar off and ran into the road. As it turns out, he’s gonna lose one of his back legs. He’s staying at the vet overnight and they’re amputating it tomorrow. He’s doing okay but it looks like someone got stabbed in the back of my car bc he was bleeding so bad. He was a good boy at the vet. He’s doing okay rn and I’ll post an update tomorrow.

FOR OUR FRIENDS, FAMILYMEMBERS

My name is Chris who is suffered cerebral ischemic stroke that led to a two year medical leave, maybe my whole life. I am still in recovery, but I must solve problem myself. I am raising money not for me, but for my family, our friends. I set up a fund saving dogs & cats. I went to Yulin Dog Meat Festival and Seoul last year to save our friends from abuse, neglect, or slaughter. I have no choice but to Buy. My goal is to donate as much money as I can save as many dogs & cats as possible. Please forgive my incoherence. The second one is about cats. When I went to China, I heard about cat abuse. Some people adopt cats to abuse them. I must do something for these cats. It saddens and embarrasses me to desperately need and request help, but it is necessary at this point. If anyone is willing to help my family, help our friends at this time, I would deeply appreciate it, and I will do my best to pay you back in the future. Please consider a donation -- any amount is greatly appreciated. Thank you, and God bless you.

Food allergies?

Five weeks ago we adopted a lab shepherd mix puppy from a shelter. The poor booger has had nothing but problems. First he developed an upper respiratory infection, following that he broke out in a rash under his front legs, belly, and on the inside part of his floppy ears. His newest adventure is losing the hair around his eyes. He has been tested for mange on two separate occasions and both times the tests came back negative. The hair loss coincided with when his next flea treatment should have been. Vet prescribed Nexgard (took his first dose today) because it has been found to treat mange and mites (just incase if that's the real problem and they keep missing it) and because it's great for fleas. So my question...of it is food allergies how long do the symptoms normally take to present? I have had a few people (groomer and pet obedience instructor) mention allergies. He was eating Iams large breed puppy and we weened him onto Authority large breed puppy. Hair loss started 4 1/2 weeks after bringing him home.

Is my mouse dying?

My pet mouse has a lump on her face. It's been there for a few weeks and doesn't seem to be receding. Her behaviour is completely normal and she does not appear to be in pain. There are 2 cats stuck in the backyard of a seemingly abandoned house beneath mine, and have been there several days and I don't know what I can do at least give them water whilst we figure out who to call.

Sorry if the title is somewhat confusing, I don't know how to phrase it in short terms.

My residential is built in a stair-like manner, picture the Brasilian fabelas if that helps you, with my house overlooking the houses below, about 4-5m above them. About a week before two cats that were in the roof of my neighbor slipped and fell to the backyard of the house adjacent to the house below mine (If that makes any sense, sorry don't know how to phrase it better) and have been there stuck without being able to get out, due to not being anything they can jump off from to reach the wall.

My mother has been throwing them some food in plastic bags so at least they are still alive and fed, however we haven't been able to give them any water, as it would only get spilled on its way down from my house to the backyard.

I post this so of anyone can give advice or share a similar story on how to get those kittens out of there since it doesn't seem the house is occupied but as far as the residential guards know, it isn't up for sale either and can't contact the owner. I don't want to watch those cats die knowing I could've done something more for them. We are hesitant to contact police or fire department since, well, I don't know how they will react or act.

I'm sorry for the horrible formatting, it's first time here, I didn't know of any other subreddit that I could post this.

Anyone know anything about basic hermit crab care?

So i am at the beach for the week and there this 5&10 shop that sells crabs. Before you say anything i know your not supposed to get them from stores like that but i don't see anything wrong with it if i plan on giving my crab or crabs the best life possible. Because after all me buying or not buying crabs from people like that won't stop them from selling them so i might as well get a few and give them a better Life then they would have with a 7 year old girl that would probably end up buying them if i didn't. i was going to get them at the end of the week because i have no way to take care of them unless i want to buy one of those shitty cages they have which i might depending on the price so i can cut it open for the chicken wire. But what one of my friends told me i can do is literally just put one or two (which ever you guys think would fit) in one of those big plastic tubs i think there called critter keepers or something but i still have one from my rat that my friend said would be good. He also said that i don't need a heater or humidity thing. He said all i really need is something for them to climb on (a log) and then something for them to climb up i was just thinking about wrapping the chicken wire from the cage around a tiny tree or something but any other ideas would be great. And then Just a sponge for salt water and a dish for food and another dish for freshwatr and of course gravel or sand with a hut. But Is there anything else? Will my crabs be able to thrive in a enclosure like that? Do i need anything else? Should i get one or two or none at all? Because i want to make sure there happy and shit. Also the main reason i want to do the critter keeper is because it's easy to take with me and hide if i ever need to because i want to have them in my dorm where anything greater than a fish is frowned upon. Also what should i feed them and how often Shoud i give them fresh food i know the stuff at the 5&10 probably isn't the best but maybe the shit they got at Petco is better? Also how often Shoud i replace their shells and with what? Like i heard that your not supposed to put craps in painted shells Because the paint can seep through to the crab and poison them but i don't know how true that is. i also hope it's not because they do have some cute shells lol but if it is true i will absolutely use natural. But yea that's it sorry for the giant paragraph lol but Thanks in advance for the help and advice. Anything else i'm forgetting?

My pet turtles

When I was .. 7? I convinced my mom to buy me these two small turtles an Asian lady was selling, I named them Suzan and jake. I showed my family my new pets, I’d feed them and sometimes let them out (only for like 10 min) They were my first real pets, (that were mine) I had them for about two weeks when they disappeared one day when I came home from school and I asked my mom where my turtles went I don’t remember much of what her excuse was but I know that I believed her, I think she somehow convinced me they ran away. About 3 months later, I’ve long forgotten about the turtles my family went downstairs to the floor below ours for a New Years party, i asked the lady where her bathroom was. I was a snoopy child so after I finished using the bathroom I pulled the shower curtain out of curiosity. There I saw them. Suzan and jake. My turtles. Upset I confronted my mother after the party, she admitted to me that she gave them away because they didn’t match the decor.

Help with my screaming kitty

My cat is a 5 year old rescue and is, for the most part, a very easy-going and loving guy. The one problem that we have with him is incessant meowing for attention, especially if we're out of the house.

He likes to head straight to the hallway in front of our roommates' doors and start meowing at loud as he can. We've tried our best to solve the problem by ignoring him until he stops, but doing so isn't an option when he tries it late at night or early in the morning while everyone is trying to sleep.

Because we either have to go bring him into the room or spray him when he does this, he's just become emboldened and is getting worse and worse about it. Any time we're out of the house he will scream at my roommates for hours and paw at their doors nonstop.

It's getting to the point where it's causing problems with everyone in the house and one of our roommates is asking us to start putting him away in our room if we go out.

We really want to figure something out so everyone in the house can sleep easy without worrying about some loud yowling waking them up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My pet squid, Jeffery

When I was about 9 I saw my parents seasoning a bowl of tiny squids, they were dead but I felt bad for them and told my parents not to eat them, to shut me up they gave me one, I named him Jeffrey and built him a house made of cardboard. I loved him even though he was dead and smelled like the sea, my parents just found it humorous The next day I brought him to school to show my friends and one of my friends got disgusted and threw him across the fence. I regretted bringing poor Jeffrey to school

Cat jaw spasms?

Forgive me if this isn't allowed, it can be deleted if so. I didn't know where would be appropriate to ask this!

Some background: I have a little cat, she's 2.5 years old. I adopted her from a rescue, and they said she was perfect in health aside from her teeth, she's had issues with eating and had gingivitis. She will only eat wet food, I assume because her teeth bother her.

The past few visits to the vet, she's been super healthy! Up until the last time I took her in and they noticed her dental issues were worsening.

So, they noticed one of her canines is chipped and it's also loose. She's also missing a tooth on the top row behind her canine. They can't tell yet if it's FORL or something similar because I'm waiting for my husbands monthly paycheck in order to get the ball rolling on x-rays and such.

I did notice, however, in the past few days, sometimes when she's asleep or just wakes up, her bottom jaw spasms and she almost seems like she's a little out of it.. It almost looks like a mild seizure, or as if she's in a "nursing trance" (some baby squirrels can get this when they drink milk.) I think it's from her teeth, like FORL resulting in an exposed nerve in her gums, and it's worrying me, but I can't find ANY actual information online about these jaw/mouth spasms or trembling despite my constant research.

She has an appointment with the vet in 5 days, as I just changed my schedule and am tight with work until next week. But I was curious if anyone had any history or experiences with something like this or any knowledge on what could be wrong. I know not everyone is a doctor and going to the vet will give me the information I need, but I was just curious if anyone's been through this before or had something similar happen, since I still have a few day until the vet sees her. Thanks in advance!

The End of the Line

Way back in 2006 I adopted this beautiful girl. She was about 1 year old when I got her from the rescue organization. Support your local shelters and rescues!

Mocah about 1 year old.

After 13 wonderful years she finally decided it was enough. About a month ago she started refusing food and this last Monday I had to let her go. It's been weeks of random crying and now it hits me that my beautiful friend is gone. I loved her more than anyone or any thing else in my life.

RIP Mocah, your family will never forget.

Dogs are smaller than the cat - How do we keep them out of the cat's room?

Our cat is very territorial and needs her own space. She's been well established in the house, and one of the rooms is 'her' room. We recently adopted two Jack-Chi mixes, and while she tolerates them, we'd like to keep them out of her room. The issue is they're smaller than her, so a kitty door won't work. Also, the cat is 9 and getting older, so she's not very spry at jumping over gates. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep the pups out?

Should I let my indoor, dog friendly, cat outdoors?

My cat is three years old, but has spent the majority of his life inside. He got out the door twice, and both times I had a mole, and a little bird at my door. I am worried to let my cat out because he will kill things, but more so he won’t come home. He has spent his whole life around dogs, Bloodhound, Chow-Chow, and black Lab. He is accustomed to dogs and is not used to roaming the neighborhood, and I worry he might cuddle up to a dog who is not so friendly. However, he always wants to be outside. He has found clever ways to try and break out and I’ve been lucky to catch him thus far. What should I do?

Dog Meeting Today— need advice please!

My dog is a Rottweiler/Pit Bull/Golden Retriever mix. He’s four and a half years old. This is important: he has had issues in the past with attacking older, smaller dogs, but after talking with professionals, they’ve told me they believe he is a non aggressive dog who was trying to take over the pack as “alpha” and show dominance (the dog he attacked was dying). He was raised in a house with a yard and other dogs, but unfortunately we had to downgrade when he was about 2 to an apartment and no other dogs. He gets TOO excited when he sees another dog, and it comes off as aggressive. He is simply very happy to see them, and being 80 pounds, has very little control. He’s a lot better than he used to be though, that’s for sure. It’s something we’ve been working on. He is also food/toy aggressive, which I’m very aware of. This is all important because today I have to move in with my boyfriend. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I have nowhere to live until August 16th. My dilemma is: he has a very old dog. He’s at least 10, but most likely is older. I love him. He’s a miniature husky of some sort, maybe 30 pounds TOPS. These 2 dogs have never met, as my boyfriend’s dog has previously been attacked by 2 large pit bulls and it’s just not something either of us were comfortable with. I know we should’ve had them meet before I moved in. That was my plan, but unfortunately it just didn’t work out that way. I know I messed up there. However, they have been smelling each other for the last 10/11 months, my dog has been to my boyfriend’s house (in the backyard, not actually physically in the house), and they’ve actually in fact SEEN each other when my boyfriend’s dog was in the backyard and my dog was in my car and I stopped by for a brief second. So they know each other’s scents pretty well. I’m wondering what I can do to make this temporary move easiest on all of us. How to introduce them, where to put my dog’s food, should I keep them separate? Not have them sleep in the same room? One dog upstairs and one down at all times? Any suggestions would be lovely. I’m open to answering any questions and providing additional information for anyone. Thank you so much! I have to be out of my current apartment by 8 pm mountain time.

Cat peeing in the sink

After we got a second cat my first cat started to pee in the sink. We didn't know for a while until we started to notice the smell. Although it could be much worse (she could pee anywhere in the house) we still would like to prevent this.

They have 1 litter box. I know that if we put in another litter box we will not be able to prevent the second cat from going in both. What would be the plan here?

Battle of the guts!

I have two cats. The eldest, Sam, is an almost-six-year-old grazer that I've had since she was two weeks old (she and her sister were abandoned). She's always had biscuits available and just helps herself through the day.

Jasper is a 4yo that I adopted from a shelter about six weeks ago now, and he had the "eat before it's gone!" mentality common of shelter animals.

Well, I wanted to be able to keep leaving food out for Sam, so I tackled it.

For the first two weeks I put just a little in the bowl, refilling it multiple times a day (up to 15 times a day).

Then I tapered it down; more in the bowl, less often. I've kept tapering it down until two days ago when I filled it full in the morning and left it.

Jasper came running, of course, but he had a couple of mouthfuls and then wandered off. He did the same thing a few times through the day, and this morning there was still some food when I topped it up.

Success! He has learned that food is always available and he doesn't have to scarf it down to make sure he doesn't go hungry!!!

This has had knock-on effects. The diarrhoea that he's been battling has reduced over the weeks, and is now gone altogether. I suspect this is because his intake is steady now.

But it's so satisfying to teach a cat that he's got nothing to worry about 🐱

How do I stop my cat from being need/demanding?

Cat will yell constantly for attention, wake us up yelling at us, is too scared to go outside on the apartment balcony, is scared of literally everything and visibly shakes when he is scared, scratches and yells if we close a door on him, if we are sleeping and wont let him sleep with us, the list goes on...

Any way to fix this?

Cheaper Flea Prevention?

I'll start this post by saying, I'm looking for flea prevention solutions that are effective and actually work! I've seen plenty of threads here that are about getting rid of infestations, but not many on prevention in the first place.

I've got both a dog and a cat, I used to use the frontline Spot On for each of them (feline and canine) as it was easy to pick up during a food shop and didn't break the bank.

So one day my cat, who basically lives outside, decided to bring home Fleas, that leapt onto my dog and furniture and decided to give us 1-2months of bitey infestation fun, until I Bug Bombed the whole house and took both pets to the Vet to ask for advice on getting rid of, and keeping fleas gone.

While at the vets, the Veterinarian basically said that anything you can pick up off the shelf are ineffective and a waste of money, she also mentioned that dog fleas are basically extinct and that cat fleas are the main type doing the rounds, so dog flea spot on would be of no use?

She recommended using the brand that you can get from the vets (obviously) thats too strong for a non-veterinarian shop to carry I guess, for both dog and cat, which is basically £100 every 3 months (Prinovox dog and cat), and obviously I have to go to the vets to pick it up which is quite out of the way.

So my question is - Is there a cheaper way to get the spot-on solution without going to the vets? Like the same active chemicals but not the same company? Also any recommendations you have would be welcomed :)

Thanks

Virgin Mary Cat?

So I'm confused on how tf my cat got pregnant when she hasn't been outside at all and my other cat is neutered and hasn't been trying to hump her...(Awkward) But she did have one kitten months ago and someone did tell me that's because the other kittens died inside her, so um did they come back to life?(Kittenstiens???) Or is there a scientific explanation. Funny because I just saved up to get her fixed (How do I know she's pregnant you ask well I can feel them move around inside her when I place my hand on her tummy)...

Our cat does NOT LIKE the new cat, not sure why or what to do.

He's not actually a new cat, we're pet-sitting for my sister for a few weeks, and it isn't going great so far. Our lady cat Daisy loves us, but is completely untrusting of my sister's boy River; she creeps around slowly if she has any hint he could be nearby, when she sees him she growls and hisses before running away and avoiding attention for a few minutes until she calms down. She has been avoiding certain sections of the house entirely because its where he hangs out, and its been going on for over a week.

For a bit of context, River is an older cat and a former stray. He has taken to indoor life so much that he is afraid of being taken outside. He is easily the most chill cat you've ever met, he basically never wants to play, he just likes to lay his chonky self around all day and get pet and cuddle. He has a history of getting along well with other cats before my other sister moved out with her cat Callie, who would often cuddle and groom each other.

Daisy is barely two years old, very energetic and loves playing, chasing paper wads and begging for attention. She was born into a small house and was perpetually kept in a dog crate with her siblings, mom, food and litter box until we adopted her. She has never seen another cat since then, though she has seen a medium sized dog and lots of new people. She was very timid when we got her and spent the first three days hiding under the couch before slowly acclimating to us and venturing through every room in the house regularly.

She usually takes about two days to get used to a new person before she'll approach them, but with River its been over a week and her behavior has not changed. We still have a few weeks before River goes home, but his being here is clearly upsetting Daisy, and I'm at a loss for what to do. She has seen me petting him, I've tried to call her over to him, she can smell him on me when I pet her, but she just can't accept that he wants to be her friend. Does anyone have advice?

My dog had surgery today, the house feels so empty without her

I’ve had the last 24 hours from hell. I had to rush my 9yo Yorkiepoo to the ER last night, to have them tell me she had to have emergency surgery. Her surgery went well and she is staying at the vet’s overnight. I just went to lay down and said “common girl, let’s go to bed” only to realize she isn’t here ::Sigh:: I miss her, the house just isn’t the same without her.

Adopting a kitten with a cold?

Recently at the local shelter, I found the perfect kitten. However according to the shelter he supposedly has a cold and will need medication for the next week. I absolutely fell in love with him, but we have another 5-6 year old kitty at home and I'm worried that if we adopted him she could get sick too. He was very calm for a kitten, so I was concerned he may be more sick than the shelter was letting on.

I guess what I want to know is how risky it would be to adopt him. Is it common for cats in shelters to carry life threatening diseases? I've personally had some pretty bad experiences adopting dogs with distemper, so I'm a little paranoid. Thanks for any advice!

Cat suddenly insane?

So, my boyfriend and I rescued this cat that I found about a year ago (named her Barbara) and she has had various behavior changes since we got her. Vets think she was anywhere from 5-7 years old when we found her.

When we first found her, she was EXTREMELY skittish. Every sound scared the shit out of her. She slowly came around, and since then she has been super chill. Before we fixed her, she would act like a little crackhead when she was in heat (scratching walls, randomly jumping around, making a "prrrrrrrr?" sound), and after we got her fixed she would have the occasional zoomie at like 3 am. Other than that, not much movement.

About a month ago, I started packing and she started acting like she did before she got fixed. Sadly, we then had to put my other cat down suddenly due to a blockage. (she wasn't the biggest fan of him, their relationship was professional at best.) Then we moved to my new apartment.

Ever since we moved into the new place she has been the worst she's ever been. She's climbing door frames, scratching up my couch, runs from me like she has no idea who I am and then 10 seconds later is getting as close to me as she physically can, chasing anything she can find, meowing at walls, etc. She's more vocal than ever; this past week is the first time we've ever heard her actually meow. She's also WAY more affectionate. This has been happening all hours of the day, not like her 3 am zoomies. Her eating habits and litterbox habits have remained the same, however.

Her crate is open in an easy to find location (she likes it in there) if she feels uncomfortable, and we purposely lived in the new apartment for a few days before moving her so the new things (like the new couch) would smell familiar. We also layed our old blankets all over everything.

Is this normal adjustment behavior? If so, how long is she going to be like this? If not, when will she chill the fuck out???

Dealing with fleas. Please help. I'm losing my mind

I do not have any pets but I live in the city where the houses are right next to each other, like row houses. My neighbor has dogs that they let out in the backyard and I recently noticed them itching and biting their backs. I have found fleas in my house two weeks ago. I had Terminix come out and treat the house for fleas. I have carpet everywhere except for the kitchen and bathrooms. I have been paranoid for the past few weeks. I have been walking around with my flashlight on my legs constantly checking for fleas. I have found and killed a few of them with my fingers. I am assuming the fleas are coming my neighbor's dogs. We don't have grass in our backyards but we do have small plants. Our backyard is the size of a one car garage and they are right next to each other separated by a fence. There fence provides no privacy in the backyard so the fleas can easily hop over.

The problem is that I used the backyard to get in and out of the house everyday. I park my car in the backyard. The past few days I haven't spotted any fleas in my home and none were found in the bowls of soapy water that are placed around my house. But just today, my leg/sin area is itchy with a few small bumps that looks like flea bites. I'm thinking that got in my car while I left for work these past few days.

Please, what are my options. I am losing my mind over these fleas. I'm afraid to get back into my car.

Sleepypods air, worth the price?

My partner and I are planning a big move in about 6-8 months that requires flying with our felines. I want to upgrade their cat carriers so they can start getting used to them now and doing some training with car rides and such. The Sleepypods have great reviews, but a big price tag. I’m willing to throw down some dough for my fur babies but I just want to make sure it’s worth it. There seem to be a ton of cheaper options on Amazon that would do the trick, but I don’t want to waste money on crap. I was wondering if anyone had any strong opinions in either direction.

Trying to understand what happened to my dog.

My 13 year old French Bulldog died suddenly yesterday in a pretty horrific fashion in front of my two kids (9 & 7). I guess I just would like to understand what happened. We did not have a post mortem done.

Sunday she was behaving oddly but she does that sometimes when her stomach would be upset. She eventually vomited and seemed okay. The next morning she was laying in the grass and after an hour or so I went out to get her because it was starting to get warm and she couldn’t walk, she kept collapsing. I brought her inside and laid her on a blanket. I then went to get my kids breakfast and she had messed herself (#2) and I ran to get a towel to take her back outside and when I got back she was what appeared to be convulsing and there was clear kind of frothy looking liquid everywhere and when she stopped moving she wasn’t breathing and had died. There was no pulse.

I guess I’d like to also be able to explain it to my kids to. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

How much penicillin can you give a micro pig? Please help!

hey i'm in desperate need! my girlfriend has a micro pig and he has pneumonia. she's taken him to the vet and the vet gave him two shots of penicillin 6 days apart from each visit and he's not better. he's not eating, he's coughing and he's just laying around. The vet admitted that they dont really know how to treat a micro pig correctly because they dont specialized in live stock like that. so he gave him the strongest shot of penicillin he can give him 6 days apart from each shot Im wondering if you can give him more or not? what else can she do? also the pigs temp is at 101.2.

New kitten

Alright so I'm pretty good with cats at this point, I've been around a lot of cats in my life. But there are still a few things I don't know, when my kitten shows me her belly I know not to pet it, but what should I do? If I don't touch her at all she gets upset, but I know she doesn't want me to pat rub belly, also, I was wondering what kind of treat I should try giving her, she seems to like black forest ham but are cold cuts good for kittens? (Unrelated but she also seems to think my dreadlocks are toys)

Why does my dog burry marshmallows?

Whenever I give my dog a marshmallow as a treat she takes it in her mouth and proceeds to bury it. I wondered what causes this behaviour, she doesnt do it with any other food and usually if she doesnt like whatever I hand her, she'll just drop it on the ground. It's really just marshmallows. Also im not trying to feed her a whole bag of marshmallows since I know it has a bunch of sugar, it's mainly just as a small treat around the fire.

Betta fish question

I read that an aquarium with filtration is a must for keeping a betta fish. I wonder why it is not acceptable to keep them in large bowls (~10 gallons) and changing 50+% of the water daily. One thing is I would like to reduce electricity usage as my (old) apartment as very few outlets. Thanks for clarifying!

Are there any studies showing foods linked to heart disease in cats?

I am aware of the dog food that has been linked to causing heart disease but are there any links to cats? One of my friend's cat's went to the vet and they told him to stop feeding his cat Blue Buffalo due to possible links with heart disease. Last year my vet was impressed we fed our cat Blue Buffalo and did not mention anything negative and I cannot find research on the topic. We will discuss this at the next vet appointment but just wondering if any of you know anything, thanks!

I need help choosing a cat!

Before I begin, I’m gonna preface by saying that this is hypothetical and my options may be limited when the time comes. Also, I wasn’t entirely sure where to ask this, so I’m sorry if I’m in the wrong place.

So in about a year, I’m going to move to another city for college and be completely independent. Considering I’ll be living alone in an apartment, I’ve been leaning on the idea getting a pet to give me company.

I know I’ll likely have a busy schedule and living in a city (most likely Chicago) will make it harder to have a dog — they generally require a lot more attention, walking, etc. Because of this, I’ve been leaning more on getting a cat since they can be more independent and do their business inside.

I won’t lie in saying I’m more of a dog person. I love them both, but I grew up with dogs and I want my new companion to have certain qualities that dogs do — loving and playful, energetic, etc. I was also super into the idea in be able to train my pet with a bunch of commands (sit, stay, shake). Like, yeah, I totally want a puppy.

So, my question is: what cat breeds would be best suited for me? I want one that is incredibly loving and enjoys being held, but also able to withstand hours alone. Are there breeds that can be trained? I also don’t want a cat to be ripping apart my furniture/peeing everywhere. I know most cat breeds shed fur, but are some easier to maintain? Also, I absolutely adore small pets! If there were teacup cats I’d be over the moon.

None of these qualities are ride-or-die, but I’m wondering what the best possible fit for my lifestyle will be.

Also, please don’t witch-hunt me about only getting a rescue (idk if it will happen here but I’ve seen it on Reddit before); I obviously want to go a humane route when finding either an adoption or shelter, and once I have a general idea my first place to look for my friend will be a rescue source. However, I would absolutely love raising the little dude/girl from being a small kitten and I’m here asking about breeds (is it hard to be selective when rescuing?); I’m willing to buy my friend.

Lately I’ve been looking at the “Ragdoll” cat breed, but I would also like input! Thanks to anyone who answers!

Advice for rehoming 8 kittens?

Hi reddit, I would love some advice on what to do in the situation I've found myself in. My parents live in the country in the middle of nowhere in TX and their two feral barn cats had eight kittens total. I believe all the kittens were born around the same time. I helped pull them at around 6 weeks from the moms and we have been socializing them inside for maybe three months now. They were not planning on keeping them as long as they did and now are pressuring me to find something to do with them.

They are absolutely wonderful kittens and I love them and I am just overwhelmed at how I can make sure they get good homes. All of them are really well socialized except one who just never really warmed up to people. Two of them are complete hams are going to make amazing pets. My parents want to go hand them out for free at Walmart which I think is a terrible idea. You just don't know who is picking them up and whether or not they will just be thrown outside and not taken care of. They are from such a small town that I could easily see this being the case.

I just don't know what my options are for these guys. I've been considering FB marketplace or finding a nice rescue or shelter that would take them, I am just so worried and invested in them and I want to give them the best life possible. I've fallen in love with one esp, but I live in a tiny apartment across the state with a very anxious kitty and a high energy dog and I just don't think its feasible for me to take one in right now. I might have a home for one of them but I am just deeply struggling with what to do with the rest of them. I don't mind driving 2-5 hrs to get to some of the major cities in TX, would that give them a better shot at life than in this tiny country town?

Both feral barn cats have been spayed at this point, I am just kicking myself that I didn't do more to help my parents from getting in this situation in the first place. Any advice would be very much appreciated, thank you!

TLDR; Feral cats left us with 8 beautiful ~4 month old kittens, overwhelmed with finding them good homes.

Looking for your experiences with deaf pups

We are seriously considering adopting a deaf puppy 12 week old female. (Unsure of breed but looks like she could be a pit mix of sorts). We have a 2 yr old male beagle lab mix who needs a friend since the passing of our other dog.

We have a home visit later this week. It’s obviously up to the rescue to deem us the right match too.

I’ve been researching and reading up on signs typically used, good training methods, crating, etc. so I have an idea of what to expect going in.

I’m more interested in people’s experiences, unusual circumstances you’ve come across, tips and tricks you love, and resources you have turned to for information.

Also, I always love pics of pups so feel free to show off your good girls and boys!

Thanks folks!

Let me hire you and your cool pet for 1 hour

Long time lurker here - looking for people who would bring their exotic pet to central new jersey for a few hundred bucks. I'm a recruitment chair for a college organization, and I'm looking for a big ticket headline piece to draw people in.

Simply just pull up with your monkey (for example) have him do a few tricks, let some people get a few pets in, and be out in an hour. PM your pet and your price. I consider pigs exotic pets too. Will be very low stress atmosphere!

Getting my very first dog!

I'm (hopefully) getting my very first dog in this upcoming month! I've never had pets growing up, but have always wanted and loved dogs. (dad is super OCD clean freak). I've been living on my own with the boyfriend for a few years now. He has had a dog when he was younger, and ran a small cat shelter in his mom's house when he lived there. Right now we have 4 cats. But I know cats are MUCH different from dogs in terms on care, training, etc.

I'm looking to get an Australian Shepherd as an emotional support dog. My doctor filled out all my paperwork etc to allow me to bring him/her in public.

What are some tips you would give first time dog owners? Things you need when you bring the pup home? Best food, best food dishes, leash, harness, etc! Tips to get him/her antiquated with your other pets (specifically cats). Or just any good resources you can think of!

TIA!

My ex and I have shared custody of our two dogs for the last 3 years and he recently decided that he doesn’t want to any more.

He had adopted a puppy just before we met and I completely fell in love with her. Then after a year of dating, we decided to get a second dog who is registered to me. Six months later, we break up but the relationship stays mostly good and we begin co-parenting. I move out, but stay in the neighbourhood. He starts dating someone new immediately and so we have a small village raising these pups. It’s good.

We explored all sorts of possibilities of what to do with the dogs, and agreed that splitting them up was not an option, and his work schedule, living and financial situation was much more conducive to raise them. I signed my dog over to him because the registration address needed to match the insurance. I regret doing that so much.

This has worked great until about last October when he moved 35 minutes away. This pretty much eliminates my casual midweek visits. I’m devastated but realize I still get to see them more than most parents do after divorces. So I made it work.

But, I don’t know what’s going on with him. He broke up with his gf of nearly 3 years and starts to hate on me quite a bit. We used to be such buds! I don’t know what changed! Every Friday is a struggle to make arrangements for me to pick up the dogs and I’m always anxious that he simply won’t answer the phone. He openly expresses how he hates both me and this arrangement.

Knowing he can take the dogs from me without recourse, I’ve tried to be as chill and friendly about all of this. I do my best to stick to the point and disregard the insults. And so far, I’ve still had access, but this Sunday when he got them, he said more serious than ever that it’s going to end soon and I need to start getting use to that.

I’m terrified about this. And the on-going, looming threat is cruel. These dogs are my life. I don’t have kids and prefer the dogs to most people. I spend so much time training them and taking care of them. They’re so incredibly smart and wonderful and funny. I just don’t know what I’d do if I lost them.

Legally, I don’t have a leg to stand on. I read an article last night that said judges don’t even want these sorts of things in the court room. I went back through all my texts to see if he made any sort of promise of sharing when we were getting along and there’s nothing. So civil court is out too.

I don’t know what to do. Has anyone else gone through this? Does anyone have any advice?

Just put my cat down

I just put my cat down not even 24 hours ago and I’m a mess. I’m 20 now and she’s been with us for 15 years. She was diabetic for about a year and lived fine with her insulin shot twice a day, but then we found out she had liver failure and had to put her down. It just feels so unbearable without her in the house right now. Her and my dog weren’t the best of friends but even he seems down now. When does this feeling get better?

Should I sacrifice my dog?

He is my very first dog! my little fella is a 14 year old schnauzer, he can barely see or hear. My dog wouldn't even recognize me anymore ( I took care of him most of his life) . It's so hard to see him like this and I don't think he is aware of anything anymore, he's just too old and seems to be confused all the time, as if he was afraid of everything. Long story short; he is a senile weak senior dog. I am facing a huge dilema, because I don't know if it's my decision to take his life. He wouldn't be the first dog we put down since 4 years ago my 10 year old Weimaraner got cancer and it turn metastatic (for obvious reasons we put him down) But that felt completely different.

Should I wait for nature to take him away or should I put him down ?

New and worried owner, need tips

Hi new dog owner here, I recently got a beautiful puppy (currently been in my possession for 2 days so he's getting used to the house) which I believe is a basenji and greyhound mix. He is energetic and doesn't really respond to a lot of calls and gestures. I'm gonna be very busy and he won't have a lot of outside time for half the week.

I'm just really worried that I can't give the puppy the home he deserves, I really like it but it's almost overwhelming because I don't know what I'm doing.

Here are some issues I'm having: 1. He asks for a lot of attention so is always coming up to me and trying to poke me with his nose or get in my face 2. Steals shoes, socks, and tears up his bed and won't listen when we say "no" and gently tug the item away from him.

Abandoned Dog, need advice :(

Hey all, first time posting here but I'm not really sure where to post to ask this question. If it's not here, please let me know and I'll definitely remove the post. Anywho.

My girlfriend has been watching her "friend's" dog for months now, probably at least 3 or 4. This girl hasn't come to visit once, hasn't paid for anything nor had anything even remotely to do with the dog. From what my girlfriend tells me, the girl who technically "owns" the dog is in absolutely no position to own this dog nor take care of it. My girlfriend asked her a few weeks ago if we could just adopt the dog as she seemingly has no desire for her back, and after a couple days the girl texted her back and said her mother wants the dog...not even her, but they don't want the dog until the end of summer??....

Having heard that, I knew my girlfriend would be devastated, and honestly so would I because the dog and I have really bonded (she always sleeps at my feet while I'm playing video games and such, it's quite a nice relationship), so I knew it would be better to just kinda rip the band-aid off for lack of a better way to put it and told my girlfriend to tell her friend to come get the dog ASAP, not at the end of the summer (this dog shouldn't be treated like some piece of property imo). So the girl was supposed to come get the dog today, but never showed, not even a text or anything. We truly don't think this girl should get this dog back, and nor do any of my girlfriend's friends.

So the question is, is there anything we can legally do to secure the dog with us and not have this girl be able to just randomly show up and take her back? My girlfriend works with the owner so I'd like to keep it as civil as possible, but we truly don't believe she will take good care of the dog and the dog leaving us and her fellow puppers seems like a really bad idea. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

hi, I need more help.

previous post: https://old.reddit.com/r/Pets/comments/cck4sh/i_think_i_got_a_dog_before_i_was_ready_and_now_im/

so things are getting better with the dog for the most part. he is really well behaved at home and we're learning ways to control his little outbursts of hyperactivity. he is still extremely clingy but we have been able to leave him home alone for like an hour at a time and he does just fine. I still have problems leaving him for much longer than that, but I think we can work up to it.

a problem that I am still having, though, is when I HAVE to take him with me somewhere. my husband and i like to visit our parents at least one weekend a month (they live about an hour and a half away from us) and taking him down there is kind of a nightmare.

i basically spend the entire weekend just worrying about our dog. he has such a hard time relaxing at other people's houses. he paces, he has double the amount of hyperactive outbursts, makes himself almost sick with anxiety, and since he is unfamiliar with the houses, he gets into little nooks and crannies and ends up eating things he shouldn't.

I want him to behave himself so bad. I feel awful and like I am completely imposing on my parents and in laws for bringing him with me. I have tried having him on leash in the house for a bit, I have tried blocking areas off, but no matter what I do he just ends up causing trouble. my husband is unfortunately kind of clueless about taking care of dogs so I tend to do all this worrying and fussing and attempts at training by myself.

kenneling is not an option, he hates them and will likely end up hurting himself if he is in one for too long.

I don't know what to do. I love him so much but when we go places with him he is nothing but trouble. I'm so stressed out.

Helping pets adjust to cat passing away - need advice

My poor, sweet Moose is crossing the rainbow bridge tomorrow night. He has been suffering from cancer which has caused his ear to essentially die. The only real solution is to completely amputate the ear. He already has other health issues that he’s had since birth, and now he’s lethargic, unable to keep any food down and in a lot of pain. It’s honestly killing me doing this but I feel terrible making him suffer anymore. I do have a border collie, Mater, who has had Moose in his life since he was 2 and another cat, Oliver, who has had Moose in his life since I brought him home. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on how to help Mater and Oliver cope with the loss of Moose? As much as it’s killing me, I can only imagine the loss that Mater and Oliver are going to feel.

Cat Food In Water Bowl (Help)

My cats won't stop putting their cat food in the water bowl, it's getting quite annoying.

I have obviously tried moving the water bowl away from the food in the room that I keep it in but they are either purposely keeping the food in their mouth to drop in the water bowl or they are somehow unaware of the fact that they have unchewed food in their mouth

This never used to be a problem so I blamed the newest cat, but apparently it's my oldest cat since I catch her doing it. Maybe they're all in on it but the oldest is bad at hiding her actions.

I have to change their water more than once a day since they cry if there is food floating in the water bowl.

Introducing my cats from my parents home to my new home with my rescue dog

Hi my parents can’t take care of my cats anymore and now that I live on my own I think it’s time to bring my childhood cats (10 and 8) who I have had my entire life.

My dog is a rescue German Shepard and 5 years old.

I have time to ease this transition as there is no hurry, so I want to do this correctly.

My house is two bedrooms so I have a safe place to sequester my cats.

Concerns: - my cats getting lost and scared in their new environment - my cats already don’t get along, but now I don’t know how to get them to like my dog - stress on the cats and dog (who even though he’s 98 pounds he’s a street dog and very scared of a lot of things)

What do I need to do to get them to like one another first?

What do I need to do to ensure that they don’t hurt one another?

Cat claw went through my earring hole

Ok, so my cat was sitting on my lap this morning and pawed at my ear which resulted in his claw going through my earring hole (I haven't cut them in a few weeks, so they're pretty long.) It didn't hurt, but I flipped out and screamed. My cat was surprisingly calm though (despite my terrified reaction,) and so i was able to easily remove his claw from my ear lobe. I don't even have gauges, so it's just a regular ol' earring slit. It didn't hurt at first, but after a few minutes it started stinging just a little bit, and it's been about 12 hours. He's an indoors-only cat, but I don't know if i should still be concerned about infections or something. I tried googling it but I couldn't find anything 🤷‍♀️

Where do you put your cat's litter box?

Mine is currently in my laundry room and the litter gets thrown everywhere. I need ideas on new placement or possible ways to avoid spills. My cat doesn't like concealed litter boxes that would prevent spillage.

A Family Of Cats and A Flea Problem

I have become the crazy cat lady after inheriting a Momma cat and five of her kittys. Momma kitty is older (around 10) and her babies just turned a year old. I recently just started letting them go outside (it is very hard work managing six cats in a smaller home, they pretty much just hang out in my yard, and Momma cat was an outside cat before.) I would still let them in when they wanted to and last week I realized we had a flea problem.. I went out and got the basic flea spray, carpet powder, and I've even using a flea comb. I've been vacuuming multiple times a day, which seems to be helping, but they just keep coming back full force. I'm on a very tight budget and I am running out of options. Any recommendations on what I can use to treat the cats that's effective, and safe for them? Is there a flea spray out there that works the best? I still live at home, father works out of town, but he thinks I should possibly 'flea bomb' the house. That makes me nervous with all of the chemicals and such but I'm just completely lost. I just want the battle with these fleas to be over! Any advice is very much appreciated!

12 Weeks old kitten in a 1 room appartment - Saferoom how?

Hi all,

First time (Soon to be) catowner here. My question is regarding a saferoom for my new kitten. I have read online, that you should provide a saferoom for the cat to get used to everything in, however I only have a small bathroom, and another room that is quite big (49 sqm).

How should i make sure the kitten can feel safe in it's own pace, without living 3 weeks under my bed or sofa?

Bonus question:

My girlfriend is leaving 1 day after we get the kitten for business, and will be gone for 3 weeks. Will this cause any issues when she gets back in regards to the new kitten, or will it be fine? She lives there, so the cat will be exposed to her a lot.

Thank you.

Cat traumatized post canine attack, need advice please

A few days ago, I was about to head to bed when I heard what sounded like a cat fight- I went outside and saw something much bigger than a cat on my cat, Nightwing. I ran over there and it took off. Didn't have my glasses on so I couldn't see if it was a dog or a coyote.

I've never seen any creature that terrified in my life.

It took a few minutes for him to stop howling and hissing at me. I got him inside and he had clear signs of shock- white gums, hyperventilating, huge pupils, rapid heart rate. He tried to walk but immediately fell down and flailed. We took him to a 24 hour vet and later transfered him to an animal hospital. No wounds or fractures, but there was some punctures around his neck.

The vets think the animal shook him and caused a head trauma. He spent approximately 36 hours under obvservation and in oxygen treatment. He's home now but he is still terrified of everything. Any movement or noise causes him to panic and run.

I know he needs time to recover/regain trust, but I'm wondering if there is anything in particular we should do to help him? Anyone dealt with this before?

Senior child hood cat and broken tooth, when to make the tough choice

Hi reddit,

I'm writing here today as my childhood cat of 20 years has, over the past year, been bringing me to the point of going crazy. She has had a broken tooth for little over a year now and has been to the vet about 15 times since her tooth was discovered broken. Since the tooth, a back molar, has been broken she's had blood works done showing that she has elevated liver enzymes and unfortunately, do to her age, is not a good candidate for going under anesthesia for the tooth removal. Too high of a risk. So, for the past year, she's been on a monthly dose of antibiotics and steroids to remove the infection that unfortunately keeps returning.

Each month she starts having clear discomfort while eating, which, after a few days, will result in obvious pain that keeps her from having much of an appetite. She'll eat really quickly and end up throwing up her food while also losing weight. Upon bringing her to the vet's office, they'll prescribe her with antibiotics and steroids which allow her to start eating, drinking etc as she normally would. She's on a strict wet food only diet and fortunately I work from home so this hasn't been too much of an issue to feed her multiple times a day. However, it's been making it extremely difficult for my partner and I to do anything outside of the home together. Even taking a simple day trip is out of the question as we are unable to leave home for more than a few hours. We have people in our lives to take care of her while we'd be away, but I know my cat gets separation anxiety when I'm gone and I'm not sure how that could effect her health.

Aside from the tooth pain, she's extremely vocal. She yowls REALLY loud randomly at ALL hours of the day AND night. Often disturbing my partner's and I's sleep which has been effecting our relationship and our performance at our jobs as we're both very tired and on edge. We wear ear plugs to bed and also keep the door shut but we can still hear her through all of that and it's disturbing our rem cycles. Her cry is so alarming that it makes my heart skip a beat as if I'm having a fight or flight response. Having guests over is very awkward and avoided at all costs as the random yowling often startles them and makes the visit clearly uncomfortable for their stay. Whenever my partner and I are having a serious or casual discussion, our cat will butt in and start crying profusely which completely throws us out of sync and the attention is then drawn to her, which makes paying bills, going over finances, bonding together, etc difficult. Even watching tv or reading is distracting as you can always expect her to start yowling. We haven't gotten a for sure diagnosis on why she cries so much but we suspect she may have dementia as she'll cry and sound confused after waking up. Walk around our home and start crying looking for us. Once we call her name, she breaks out of the confused yowl and cry calmly and break out of the stance.

How much longer will this go on for? A few months, a year, a few years? By then, I'll probably be in a loony bin as I don't know how much more I or my partner can take. This is MY cat. My childhood friend that I've had for years. We've always been through thick and thin together. And I feel like I'm just giving up on her. I know it's not her fault but I feel so... so helpless...

I'm left with feelings of guilt, depression, anger, selfishness and have no clear path on what to do. If it were up to me I would make the decision of putting her to sleep, but her veterinarian assures my that she still has good quality of life. Where does this leave me? Am I cruel for feeling this way? Am I wrong to want to make the decision of putting her to sleep early? Is this considered early? I honestly don't know and I feel so sick to my stomach. I love my girl so much. I just wish she could tell me what she wants...
