Scratch pad with cat nip?

I've just adopted two kitties, and the boy (5 months) is starting to scratch my couch's backrest. I've been looking at scratchpad and scratch post options, and there are some with catnip. Should I invest in one of those? Does a scratch pad or post need to have catnip?

Am I a bad owner

My cats a 15 year old hyperthyroid cat, who's been on methimazole since october. Shes has episodes of intense scratching, in turn mutilating her face. The vet for some reason though it was fleas, so kept giving her a steroid shot, and some flea meds. I brought up 3 times that it could be a reaction to the meds. They finally admitted that they think it is, so they recommended that I take her off the meds for at least 2 weeks, to see if it's actually the meds or not. She also mentioned the iodine tharapy, but that's $1,500, and 5 hours away. Which I could in theory afford, but my vet said we could try hills y/d first. I was planning on going that rout, but I did some research, and discovered that it's a really crappy good, and has mo meats, which cats need. The reason I was gonna wait, and go with the hills y/d first is because the cat is legally my mothers, and I needed some time to talk about it with my mother. I know I'm not the owner, but am I doing wrong by this cat by letting it go 2 weeks without treatment, and then putting her on crappy food?

Question re/my kitty

So my cat has been having gurgling sounds and diarrhea every night for the past little while. 2 weeks ago I took him to the vet and got a clavamox prescription, which he has finished. He had diarrhea before the prescription, and it stopped when he started the meds and started back up after the meds were done. He does not have worms (at least from what i’ve seen from the bloodwork), and i’ve used a dewormer just to make sure. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

My new zebra finch is not normal, help

I recently bought a zebra finch, it is a male, and his behavior isn’t normal. He alows himself to be picked up, and is being bullied by my female finches. His beak is fully orange, so he is in fact mature, but he doesn’t seem to be afraid of hands or people.

We have an open enclosure where we keep all our birds, that is completely netted. They fly around and we have posts and nests if they do wish to reproduce.

He flys around and doesn’t stay around us, but when we introduce our animals to the enclosure it takes a while for them to find out where the posts are and where the nets are. He has had a few accidents and fallen :( but all of our birds learn and live healthy lives, and we had a female zebra live to almost 8 years until she passed.

When he fell we picked him up and noticed he is not scared of our hands and stays on us when we pick him up, sometimes new birds are in shock after the bump (it sounds terrible I know). But they quickly adapt. Usually we introduce them to the surroundings in short periods, to make sure they don’t get hurt by crashing into the netting. Every time he gets tired from flying we can come and pick him up and he will just stay on us. He eats off our hands and seems to have no fear. He prunes his feathers on our hands and pecks at our palms. I am confused. Most zebras we have want nothing to do with us unless they are hungry.

He doesn’t appear to be getting along with the other finches but is friends with our 3 parakeets, he stays with them and follows them around (also seems they have accepted him because he likes to get very close and the parakeets show no aggression). Usually our birds teach other birds where the posts are and such, and the parakeets are helping him out weird... Also, he’s begun to recreate the parakeets chirps, also weird.

Is this normal? Is he perhaps too young and doesn’t recognize us as a “threat”? He isn’t hand fed, and we bought him for 8$ at a pet store we’ve used for years.

He is the only male, and we got him 2 days ago.

When we bring him inside he will just chill in our palms and doesn’t appear distressed, normal breathing, feathers aren’t defensive, he seems relaxed.

He doesn’t seem blind nor deaf either.

TLDR: new store bought zebra finch is not afraid of us, and being bullied by female finches. Also gets along with parakeets. Kinda weird. Super chill and stays on your hand, but he wasn’t handfed. Help? Is that normal?

My grandmothers old cat is getting bullied, I might have to adopt him so he lives a peaceful final years.

My grandma has 3 cats and a dog. One of them, Martin, does not get as much attention as the others and ends up getting bullied by the other cats.

Martin is pretty close to 13-15 years old right now. We aren’t sure his exact age. He’s just got his skin cancer taken care of, he might be diabetic, and he’s getting more and more deaf as the days go on. My grandmother wants the best for him and has agreed to pay for his vet and food bills(I’m a broke college student).

I am able to home him. He’ll stay at my boyfriends house until I’m able to get an apartment that allows cats. I basically live at my boyfriends anyways so he’d get much care and attention from me and his animal loving roommates(I have their permission).

I know that my housing situation isn’t the best or most consistent right now, but I know this cat very well and we love each other. He isn’t able to snuggle much at his current home because of the other cars and I just know he deserves better.

I want to know if I’m making the right decision in taking him in. He’s old and changing homes would already stress him out, I don’t want him to be surrounded by strangers as well. He’ll be loved and taken care of with me. He’ll have a backyard to play in, he’ll be able to go on walks with me(he enjoys walks with other people), and most importantly he’ll be able to snuggle someone and feel the love that he deserves everyday. I just don’t want him getting used to all sorts of strangers all over again, he doesn’t deserve that. But he also doesn’t deserve getting bullied by his own family members and I don’t think it’s healthy for an old kitty to get into fights with the others.

Best wall-mounted or suction cup cat/pet water dish under $30?

(I’d post this in r/cats, but I don’t have enough karma yet to post there.)

At nighttime, I have to corral all three of my cats into my bedroom and close them in for the night because otherwise they harass and wake up other family members. Nbd.

The problem is that one of my cats like to dig his water bowl and because my bedroom has particle board flooring, getting it wet will cause it to fall apart like wet tissue. He puts his arm into the bowl up to his elbow and makes huge breaststroke sweeps with his arm, flinging water everywhere for a good 2ft in every direction around his bowl. If the bowl isn’t weighted or he can’t put his paws in it, he’ll flip it entirely. Our current setup in the kitchen is a giant high-walled rabbit cage tray with two giant, heavy metal dog bowls in a metal holder in the middle so he just floods the tray. It’s way too big for me to put something similar in my room.

There are already four soft spots in my floor where my foot has nearly gone through from the flooring having gotten wet when an animal threw up, I spilled a cup of coffee, the dog drooled in her sleep, etc. Family can’t afford to put real floors in so I gotta make do for now, and I can’t have my little bastard making my floor cave in entirely.

I’ve tried using a travel pet waterer with a lip on the inside of the bowl to prevent spilling, and while it keeps my cat from flinging water everywhere, he also won’t drink out of it because he doesn’t like the edges touching his whiskers. Then I tried two different cat fountains and none of my cats will drink from them, while the water digger still tries putting his hands in the fountain and flinging the water around.

As it is, I have no way of supplying the cats with water overnight without having to risk potentially sleeping under the trailer when the floor caves in from getting wet. I need some sort of dish or bottle that I can mount/screw into the wall, which can’t be tipped/pushed over or flung everywhere while being accessible enough that a cat won’t have trouble drinking from it, but I can’t find any products with good reviews that meet those specifications. My budget is also pretty limited.

If anybody knows of some decent products that might work, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Introducing a new cat

So my boyfriend and I have to move in with my mom while we get our finances settled. We have a cat (mew) and she has a cat (shadow) Shadow is about 13 and has lived with another cat that recently passed so he’s no stranger to other cats. Might I add the cat that passed was female mew is also female she’s 6. We were going to bring mew over to the house tomorrow to introduce them. I’m looking to make this easy on both cats I believe shadow will be ok it’s mew I’m worried about. We took her in off the streets about 3 years ago we don’t know how she does with other cats. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

My boyfriends roommate is neglecting her cats, help!

So I recently started staying over most days at my boyfriends flat. His roommate is being evicted in a few months due to her inability to be hygienic or pay rent on time and when that time comes, I’m moving in.

Regardless, she has two adorable sibling kittens but I personally feel like she neglects them and I have no clue what to do anymore.

So here’s the issues:

-the two kittens share a small litter tray. It doesn’t get cleaned for weeks at a time and fills with cat puke, piss and poop until it’s completely saturated through and they end up peeing and pooing in sinks and the bath

-they are locked in a tiny hallway all day and night with one scratching post and no toys or interaction. She doesn’t let them into her room and my boyfriend (who owns the flat) had to put his foot down and stop them from being in the living room since they destroyed the walls and sofa and she has refused to pay any of this back. He never expected them to be left in the hallway, however. The cats have no social interaction with people and are left to both curl up in a tiny cat carrier with a thin blanket on the bottom together. This is the only “comfortable” place they have to sleep by they barely fit on to it

-we have a balcony and when she goes out she lets her cats walk along and play on the thin ledge (we live 3 stories up) and if we get nervous and ask her to take it off, Especially on really windy days, she says no and makes a point of making it stay there

-their water doesn’t get changed for weeks. It’s allowed to totally dry up or fill with cat litter and dust and grime. I placed fresh water for them tonight in one of my personal food bowls and they both ran over and instantly began drinking

-they have had no vaccinations and more importantly they haven’t been neutered. They’re siblings and the male keeps trying to mate with the female which she just finds funny because “inbreeding them could be cute since they love each other”

I feel like the worlds worst person and so does my boyfriend for living with this. We do what we can for them but we both 1. Don’t have the money to be buying the cats what they need 2. If we were to interfere, I know she’d not only make life even more hellish for us but also look after them even less

Both of us want to anonymously tip animal services so they can be rehomed but with the current situation we don’t actually feel psychically safe doing so while she lives here.

I could wait for the few months until she moves out, give her a week then call but honestly I’m just so upset with the situation. I love animals so much and hate seeing them suffer but I’m at a total loss of what to do. I do the little things I can like sneaking them snacks and water while she’s out of the house but does anybody have a better solution?

Removing the cats or calling animal welfare is out of the question as far as I can see. She’s crazy and aggressive and I know if they were removed she would do something extreme to us.

What deems a dog safe to be discharged from the vets?

My dog died suddenly after coming home from the vets. He was panting heavily and his tongue was slightly blue, the vet said nothing and within 20 minutes of him being home he died on his bed. He was having x rays of his legs and chest because we have been to the vets 5 times in 21 days over his panting constantly and 2 bouts of collapse. Each time we were told it was due to pain but I asked for an x ray of his chest and they agreed. They first said he had fluid in his lung, they said they took a needle sample twice and that everything went ok. His mms and crt were fine on discharge
we had to wait a further 50 minutes for the vet to tell us all this in which Ben was panting heavily. So my question is, what is it that deems a dog safe for discharge?

How hard is it to get the prescription for my cats food?

I got this cat from my sister and he has to have this special food everyday or he gets really sick and my sister and niece were always forgetting to give it to him. I took him for my niece so she would know he's safe and taken care of and still in the family. When I took him I also got a case of his special food, I asked my sister how to get more and she said that she had the prescription and to just let her know when I am running low. This wouldn't be a problem if I didn't hate my sister. She's narcissistic and toxic and has put me through hell and if it weren't for her kids I would have cut all ties with her a long time ago. It shouldn't but I know at some point me going to her for the cat food will come back to bite me in the ass so I've been wondering how hard it would be to get the prescription and order his food myself. Can I just call a vet or would they expect to see him? Can I avoid taking him in if I know what vet she took him to originally? Do i really need the prescription or can I just order it without?

Trying to acclimate my new older dog any suggestions?

I recently rescued a neighbors dog. He was moving and couldn't keep him any longer. Cosmo (the dog a golden retriever) is 12 years old and was with his owner her whole life. I really don't like to have to put him on a leash every time she goes out but i don't want him to go back to where he used to live mostly cause she would have to cross a busy street and I fear for her safety. Also she seems to fear going up and down the stairs we were able to coax her up using treats but you could tell she was uncomfortable with it and she still won't go down them I have to carry her. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thank you

Cat acting strange after moving house

We moved house with our cat 2 days ago. He came from my partner's family home where he lived with a few other cats, he's 1.5 years old. When we first moved in we did everything the internet said like letting him out in a small room, ensuring he had water, food, litter. He's used to a tray but WILL NOT poo in one in this house. He'd much rather go in the corner on my brand new carpet. He wees in it though.

He hides upstairs in the bedroom (where his food etc is) and hides under the quilt. He's purring, all over us, happy, when we are up there but he won't come downstairs.

How can I make this move easier for him and also get him to use the tray? I feel awful that I've put him through this stress and now he seems unhappy :( but I'm aware it's only the second day

Best dog food?

I’m planning on rescuing a new friend in May, and was wondering what more experienced dog owners have to say about the best food options.

I’m willing to spend more if it means a healthier doggie.

Update: he pulled through

Hello, some people might remember me from a few days ago. My dog was hours away from being put down and I reached out asking for support. However I'm really happy to say that things have changed since then. He is still alive and has had a big big operation, in which the vets found a massive tumour that has since been removed. He is now eating, drinking and walking again. It's early days but the vets are very happy with his progress. Figured it would be nice to update those who were so kind to reach out to me. Thank you so much. x

Anxiety Over Spaying

I dropped my 6 month old kitten off to be spayed this morning. I've had 7 cats before her who were all spayed/neutered and nothing bad has ever happened, but I'm feeling uneasy about this one. My oldest cat, who is 17, got her teeth removed recently and had a really hard time coming out of anesthesia. The vets sent her home after failing to wake her up. The first few days she couldn't move much beyond her head, and it took her two weeks to get back to normal. She's been checked up since and is as healthy as a 17-year-old kitty could be, but it really freaked me out. So now I'm worried about my baby and the minutes feel like hours.

Does my cat like being chased by us?

We sometimes will chase her around the apartment and mix in some hiding from her for good measure. I'm not sure if we should or not though? She's not the friendliest of cats anyway, and we're not sure if this is bonding of off putting for her. She will make her happy chirrups at times during it, but will also run off and fully hide as well as start to swipe and bite if we get to close. Basically, is she enjoying it or is she terrified and hating it?

Cat Advice - Puking

Hello all,

I have cat that's been puking more frequently lately. Before I get into anything, I have been in contact with a vet in the past and will be making an appointment on Monday (since it's Saturday now).

I've had him for about 4 years now and he puked occasionally (I'm talking like once every few months) and it was undigested food. Now he pukes like every day for a week and then he's fine for about 2 months. Over the last few months I have been taking him into the vet to figure this out and there hasn't been much progress. We've tried moving meals from 2 to 3 times per day in smaller portions, switching from chicken to a limited ingredient venison diet, and an anti-acid in case he produces too much acid.

The last time I talked to the vet, they said the next thing they would probably do is some sort of biopsy to see if he has a IBS. Personally I don't want to have to put him through medical procedures if I don't have to as that will be stressful for him. Although if that leads to a solution, I will 100% do it.

He is otherwise active, his fur is shiny, and he appears to be in good health with the exception of this regurgitation/puking problem.

So does anyone have any other things they can think of that might be causing this? I'd like to have some other ideas when I go to the vet. Thanks!

I think my dog doesn’t love me and it’s breaking my heart

My puppy is 16 weeks old, she’s with my since she was 8. So half her life she spent with me. She’s a jack Russell terrier. I love her, take good care of her. She’s with me a lot because I work from home, she’s never alone more than 4 hours. We go for long walks and play a lot every day. She gets the best food, best toys, she’s very well taken care of and loved deeply. The sad thing is she doesn’t give anything back in return. She doesn’t greet me when I’m back, she doesn’t come when I call. Doesn’t cuddle with me or give me kisses. She’s kind and friendliness with strangers but a stranger to me. She runs away when I try to get to her and pulls away when I try to pet her. Her behaviour is breaking my heart. Will this ever change? Has anyone experienced late bonding with a puppy?

My African Ground Squirrel is becoming so aggressive, I have no idea why

We saved an african ground squirrel from abusive kids about less than a year ago, she was a little baby and have spent a good amount of time with us. She was very sweet and loved me playing with her. She never bites.

She lived in a cage but we would always let her out in the sun and she loved the sunlight.

But recently after a year passed she started becoming so aggressive and attacks and bites my family members.

My dad recommends releasing her into the wild because it’s where she belongs but I’m scared she won’t be able to get her food or maybe die because she was used to us feeding her.

Please tell me what you think, i need advice.

Shih Tzu won’t stand or walk

Stow, Ohio here. Our rescue Shih-tzu (we have had him for 2+ years now) Oliver (not sure of age, maybe ~7) for the last two days doesn’t want to stand up or walk, go outside, etc. He is 17-18lbs. He keeps licking his back left paw. When he tries to walk, his back appears arched. This began this past Wednesday night. On Wed evening, he ate and did #2. On Thursday, he wouldn’t get out of bed. Took him to vet and they expelled his anal glands and sent him home. He came home, seemed OK, ate and #2, went to bed. Friday morning, again wouldn’t get out of bed or go outside. At noon Friday, took him to vet again, where in their lobby he was unwilling to stand or walk. Dropped him off. They observed him, said he was walking for them, said his range of motion in legs is good, lymph nodes do not seem worrisome, and he even ate for them and did #1 & #2. They thought maybe he tweaked his back. Sent us home with Carpovet 25mg (1.5 tablets once daily). Gave it to him yesterday afternoon and he ate and did not #2 yesterday night. This morning, Saturday, again would not get up. I gave him another Carpovet dose at 7a, and still he will not stand, walk, eat, or go outside. Since Thursday, even if we try to pick him up, he growls and tries to bite. I am just not sure about the back diagnosis. Am I being too worried here?

Edit: Oliver has lived with us for 2+ years now and is typically active and loves walks.

Newly adopted cat will NOT stop meowing! HELP!

Hi everyone! Seeking all the help and advice here.

Got a male, neutered, approximately 1-year old cat from the shelter almost 3 weeks ago. I am at work all day but I play with him for 20-45 minutes before leaving for work and before bed time. Every morning and night after he eats breakfast or dinner and uses the litter box, he will start pacing around my apartment just HOWLING for like 10 minutes. It sounds like he is upset or distressed. I don’t know why he’s meowing because I’ve given him food and he’s used the litter. He eats a mixture of dry and wet food (I’m trying to get him on just dry food but he’s so picky and doesn’t like the two kinds of dry food I have bought).

I have been ignoring his meowing and not giving in at all, but I feel like it’s making no difference. I know cats can take two weeks to adjust to a new place... but it’s been almost 3 weeks so I’m losing faith.

SOS please help! Anyone have any experience with this? Or also dry food suggestions? So far I’ve tried Rachael Ray Nutrish and Purina Grain Free Chicken + Egg. Miss on both.

cats are acting weird?

i’ve had my cats for about 9 months and both of them have been very comfortable in my house. one of them is quite skittish but the other is confident and brave and loves attention. this morning, i noticed both of them have been avoiding the kitchen unless we are in there. about an hour ago, i heard both of them go flying out of the kitchen completely puffed up and terrified. i went to go check and nothing had fallen and neither of them were hurt. they both ran under the couch and didn’t come out for a good 5 minutes, and when they finally did both of their tails were still puffed and they were slowly walking and staring at the kitchen but wouldn’t get too close. i’ve never seen either of them act like this at all, and i want to make sure it’s not anything serious. any advice?

Dog Keeps Pooping Inside??

My doggo is a 9 yr old shih tzu and has been living with me in my college apartment for 4 years, he previously lived in my family home for another 4 years. His daily routine is going outside to pee in the morning and afternoons and then evenings I take him for a walk to poop, he has done this everyday, without fail, for 8 years.

For some unknown reason he keeps pooping in my apartment? I clean it every time, and he's ashamed every time (he goes and hides in his little corner) but it happens frequently. I started to restrict his diet, typically I just leave a bowl of food out and he eats whenever he feels like it, but even when I only let him eat at night, walk him about twenty minutes after and he poops, I come home later to more poop!

I tried to walk him in the afternoon AND evening, opposed to just evening, and still. More poop.

The poops are all brown, normal size, nice and sturdy, not watery or runny at all, very very healthy poops.

Help me

So I live in an apartment of which I own (Not rented). But there are signs outside of my apartment saying no pets allowed. I've wanted to have a Ferret or Cat for quite sometime but idk if my apartment has the power to actually kick me out or something. I had this one situation I ordered Hamster Food and it arrived downstairs and the security knew it was Hamster food through the tag and he just said good luck with the Hamster so I'm curious, do I have to actually follow this rule?

Fleas?

Hey everyone,

I have a kitten, roughly about 5 months old. I’ve been flea treating him, washing him with flea treatment yet these suckers are still on him?

Now they’ve migrated to my actual house and furniture, we’ve cleaned, mopped and dusted to make sure everything is clean so they can’t get stuck anywhere but what else can I do? I’m washing all curtains, blankets, pillows.

Is there anything I can do to stop the cycle on him & on my furniture?

Advice with kitten siblings: Male bullying female

So 1 month ago we adopted a 6 month old male kitten, he was super cute and loving and became very attached to us, so we decided to adopt his sister from the same litter so they could give each other company. They grew up together and were raised by their mom, they were totally bff.

Anyways, they apparently forgot each other because when we brought the second cat last Sunday, the male was hissing and kind of upset, so the female got really stressed. We realised that we needed to do a proper introduction of the cats since they could remember their littermate days.

So we have been working a lot on reintroducing the cats properly: separate rooms, feeding on opposite sides of the door, room swapping, etc. It worked great in the way that they seem to be used to each other, they don't get upset and the new one is also more used to the house.

HOWEVER the Male cat is incredibly annoying with the female cat. She seems that she wants to explore and play calmly but the male is annoying her all the time, to the point that she hides from him in all the corners of the house. He chases her across the house, pounces at her from the back, bites her and also smells her butt a lot. Therefore we still have to lock them (mostly the female) in separate rooms which breaks our heart because they cry a lot when they get locked.

We will spay and neuter them in 2 weeks because they first need to get vaccines and stuff, but we were wondering if there is anything else we can do to make the male become less annoying? I try to supervise them when I am home and I spray the male with water when he is too annoying, and sometimes I give them timeouts in separate rooms. But I can only do this when I am home which is like 4 hours per day, so most of the day I have to leave them in separate rooms.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions :)

Cat suddenly became aggressive toward me

I'm 1 second away from putting my cat in a crate and taking it to the humane society. It's actively trying to attack me for no reason. She was fine when I walked outside for some firewood, but now she's trying to kill me. I've given this cat an honest try, she can be loving, but every guest I have sends her into attack mode, she's earned the nickname "cat from hell" and quite honestly I can't deal with her anymore. I've had her for 3 years, love her, but this is the last straw. I am getting rid of this cat, today, unless there's some magical way to make her behave.

Should I get a puppy if I go to school?

Hello. I'm planning to get a 3 week old Bichon Frise puppy, but I have 6-8 hours of school and I don't think I can trust my mom and grandma since they're busy and sometimes careless. My parents are divorced so I don't have my dad. We promised my mom's friend (the puppy's mother's owner) that we would adopt the puppy and get her first vaccination. What should I do? Is this a good idea? I know what would happen to her if i left her alone for that long possibly without any care at all...

Question about my dog

I've had a shiba inu chihuahua mix for a bet long time, she's about 14 - 15 years old. Recently when we put her in her kennel at night she starts to whine and yip. Is this separation or kennel anxiety? She's been kennel trained all her life and she's only recently started showing this behavior. Does anyone know the cause of this and how to calm her down at night?

Dog caused problem

Hello guys!

As my first post, I'd like to ask your opinion on something. My neighbour had a small mixed breed dog that is a both inside and outside doggo. As she has a baby, she kept the dog outside. Someone threatened her with calling the police on her as the dog was outside if my neighbour didn't give it to her.

Since the dig has been taken away, the idiot keeps the dog outside like my lovely neighbour did. A few people in our village saw the dog on the streets.

My question: If you were my neighbour, what would you do?

Thank you for your answers

Gave away temporary fostered cats after 3 months was extremely hard. How should we follow-up?

Allow me to sketch the entire backstory:

Three months ago, a cat shelter asked my girlfriend whether we could temporarily take in two sibling kittens, just until a permanent foster family was found. Within a week a interested family (mother with two nice kids) visited, and they agreed to adopt the kittens after the required procedures (sterilization etc). They paid the fee to the shelter, and all forms were filled in and signed.

So far so good; we were not too emotionally attached yet, and our own cats (3 and 18 year old males) seemed to tolerate their short visit.

However, we noticed that the girl kitten was breathing very rapidly, and was less active than her brother. Upon examination by the vet, it turned out that she had a serious lung infection and they prescribed her antibiotics. A couple of weeks passed by, and the poor thing got worse and worse; she was just lying on her pillow panting and looking very sad, while she was actually losing weight (she had zero appetite) while her brother was getting bigger and stronger. He wanted to play fight with her, so sometimes we had to move him to another room to give her a break. At the same time, they enjoyed each other's company so we did not want to stress them by separating them completely.

The vet office took new pictures, and it turned out that none of the antibiotics were effective; her longs were completely infected and she kept on losing weight (weighing less than 900 grams at this point, while her brother weighed almost 2 kg). They warned us that the chances of her pulling through were very slim, as her heart was also affected because of the desperate attempts of her lungs to get some air in. They prescribed one more experimental antibiotic, and a special kind of food which my girlfriend tried to administer with a syringe (the kind without needle obviously) multiple times a day.

She sort of stabilized, and stopped losing weight, but the vet insisted that the situation was not looking good. All this time, we were in contact with the permanent foster family, who were ofcourse also very sad (they had already lost their former cat a couple of months prior to this), but we kept hoping for the best.

And then, slowly but surely, she started becoming more active and even began to gain some weight (after lots and lots of 'force' feeding).!We were delighted to see her stand up to her stronger brother in their play fights, and it was awesome to see her climbing up a pole, asking for pets, and even playing with our older own cats.

Even the pictures of her lungs cleared up, and after a month of continuous improvement it was finally decided that she was strong enough to make the move.

Problem is, by now these two kittens/cats are part of our household. After intensive feeding and medication (my girlfriend had a whole schedule printed out), and many trips to the vet, they were such a big part of our live, and on top of that the male was the cutest cat I have ever seen; when you picked him up, he started purring loudly, and touching your face with his paws and his little nose. He was always up to no good, and wanted to play fight with everyone, but he was never mean and always seemed to have the best intentions.

At the same time, keeping 4 cats was a lot of work, and our oldest cat seemed to prefer being left alone, so for his sake and because emptying 4 litter boxes daily/feeding them all the time started being a real chore, we though that we would be okay with giving them up.

Yesterday, the foster family came to pick them up. they were very nice; they had brough flowers and were very considerate about the emotional impact it might have on us. However, the moment we had to pick them up (they were scared of all the commotion) and put them in an unknown basket to leave with people they've only seen twice yet, it broke my heart. We were both devastated and feel a sort of emptiness now that we don't have these two running around anymore. Seeing some of their toys/medication syringes lying around is very hard to deal with. I know we should be happy that they are healthy, together and with a loving family, and we are, but we still miss them very much.

The new family said that we were always welcome to visit, but I wonder if that would do more harm than good; perhaps it is best to make a clean break? Would it be worse for the kittens if they saw us again? I would not want to think that we abandoned them, although I know that they probably will forget about is in a matter of days/weeks. It would also be a comforting thought that we could propose to the family that we could take the cats in when they are on holiday (seems like a win-win), but would that stress the cats out too much?

Brother wants me to take care of his guinea pig because he doesn't want it in his room anymore. I want to save up for my own hamster instead.

I feel like this is a little unfair. His guinea pig is also alone and he and his gf didn't properly prepare to keep a guinea pig. He hands me stuff he doesn't want and I'm mad that he's asking me to keep his pet in my room now that he's having a kid. It won't be my pet and it hurts that I can't have something that's completely mine. I wanted to prepare stuff to get for a hamster so that I'm prepared and have the nicest enclosure for a hamster. There's only space in my room for 1 pet. I feel so guilty because the guinea pig is on a cage on the floor in the hallway because my bro doesn't have enough space. Why do I have to have a pet that isn't mine because of his mistake? I don't want to get attached to a pet that isn't mine. What the heck should I do? How do I knock sense into him so he takes better care of his guinea pig? I really want a hamster in the future and guinea pigs are very different from hamsters.

Found a cat, what should I do?

I don't usually do anything about the cats outside my apartment complex but I've been hearing this kitten meow all day today. He was pretty much nonstop meowing in the stairwell by my door for an hour before I got food to put outside. The second I opened the door this boy immediately ran inside my apartment. He's a young long hair orange boy, unneutered, and he's very friendly.

I didn't notice it right away but after petting him I can feel that he's very thin, like there's no fat on him at all and I can feel all his bones. He doesn't feel dehydrated. He also has a collar with a bell but no tag. The collar seems new but the bell is worn. I gave him food and water which he ate and drank completely.

Should I put him back outside? Should I contact a rescue? I don't want to take someone's cat but he's so thin and I saw a different orange cat last week with an ugly injury on its leg. I guess I'm a little worried about him.

I have my door open for him to leave but he's sleeping inside atm.

Post-CCL surgery limp

Need pet input: My best boy, Archer, tore his CCL back in August. Knowing that he is an energetic dog and between twenty and seventy pounds, we elected for TTA Rapid to aid with the healing and help to prevent long term damage to the healthy knee. We did everything the surgeon said to the T! Ice, heat, therapy, short walks, and increasing activity gradually. I was even a stickler about not letting him off his limited activity status even one day early than the vet said (this was around Thanksgiving). We've also done or best to maintain his weight.

Three weeks ago, he developed a limp on the same knee. He doesn't wince in pain when I do therapy, but he is frequently going to three paws. They thought it might be arthritis and said give it three weeks. It's been three weeks and he still has issues going on all fours.

What happened? Current suggestion is a meniscal tear, which is common along with CCL tears, and appears to be a surgery-only problem. How was this not preventable during surgery or warned that I had to help prevent it? The surgeon's resolve was 12 weeks and that's "fully healed". I'm looking for professional information or personal experiences going through this situation. I'm tired of my buddy being uncomfortable.

My parents have been daily feeding some adult cat food to our young kitten for the past 1.75 months, starting at 11 weeks old -- Will she grow fine?

Hi, apologies if this post is written poorly... I'm kinda in a bad mood at the moment.

Anyway, back in January we picked up a ~10 week old doll-face Persian kitten from a breeder. We started off feeding her the dryfood that the breeder had already got her on, then we eventually transitioned her to also eat wetfood. Within just 2 weeks of her arrival, my father started giving her some extremely cheap "Friskies" adult formulated food-- he feeds the neighborhood stray cats a few times a day and felt sharing some of it "out of kindness". Since then, he's determined to feed her a spoonful of this food 2-3 times a day and it seems to be making it harder to feed our kitten the food she needs to be eating. On top of that, my mother has also been feeding her adult formulated food; "special treats" as she calls them, but feeds them daily-- sometimes multiple times a day... and yes, they replace meals.

If I were to estimate... on average, our kitten has been eating 40% adult food and 60% kitten food since she was 11 weeks old. (now almost 18 weeks old)

I've tried politely telling them a fair amount of times that we should not be feeding her this stuff until she reaches her appropriate weight and size (1~ year of age), but they won't listen. I've tried explaining the difference between "kitten" and "adult" formulated food and also told them that a kitten's stomach is very small and we really should reserve the space for the more calorie packed kitten food, but again they won't listen. They think because she's not with her mother anymore, she's almost an adult now. Something something cat years, too. They also think my goal of feeding her kitten formulated food until she reaches 1 year of age is "mean" and "unfair."

I even asked our vet the other day in front of my mother about when it's safe to start introducing adult food to her diet (basically said "12 months depending on weight, earliest being 9 months") and my mother just ignored it.

Despite me being the one who funded everything for this family pet of ours ($1.5k total so far out of my own pocket), my opinion and concerns seems to mean absolutely nothing in this house.

So with all that said; will our kitten be OK with this bad feeding habit, or is this going to screw up her growth? I've been so concerned about this and I feel bad that she isn't getting all the nutrition she needs. Especially since I think she seems a bit underweight? 3.1 pounds @ almost 4 months of age. (apparently she should be 4+ pounds by now?)

Anyway, thank you for reading and thank you for any words.

Older dog getting aggressive.

I need advice, I have three dogs who have all been with me a around a decade.

Alpha is a 80lbs, 11yo-ish lab mix and in the dog park can take down anyone who cares test him, so a good fighter for lack of a better term. Generally very laid back but when his line is crossed he is ready to go.

Beta is a 60lbs, 11-12yo-ish terrier mix, very fast and generally has been able to hold his own quite well, but is aging the most, but very healthy.

Zulu is a 65lbs, 9yo hound mix. Completely non aggressive. Will vocally defend treats or food but will run away or hide behind me sooner then anything.

Alpha seems to be getting more aggressive with Beta, I expect the odd tiff and cut or scratch, but it is getting out of hand. Today I came home to blood everywhere, Beta has a 2 inch tear in his ear, a golf ball sized wound on his chest and a dozen puncture wounds or more on his legs. Not a scratch on Alpha or Zulu. This is by far the worst attack, before has had a severe puncture wound (once on chest and once on hind quarter), a puncture to his ear or a couple punctures to his legs. These attacks have all been spread out over a year or two, individually, never concerned me much, but this is the second time since Thanksgiving...

There is also questions that Alpha might have injured my 2yo niece last year. Her injury could not specifically be attributed to Alpha as she could also have fallen and gotten the same laceration, but it could also have been a K9 tooth that caused it (my Vet's opinion from pics). Alpha was seen sleeping in the room moments before she started screaming, but she was in a wild monkey phase and no one witnessed it. Alpha has never shown agression to children before, he has always been the dog kids could climb on and play with. So when the Doctor said it was likely a fall, my family accepted it. However I have never been so sure as the attacks on Beta have piled up.

I feel sick to my stomach and need advice, do I kennel Alpha whenever I am not home? I do not really have any way to isolate him other then kennel. Try a Muzzle? Do I rehome him? Is there anything I can do to? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

My 9 m/o female dog has started to be aggressive towards my 2 y/o male. Tips?

We adopted our younger female dog when she was about 4 months old from a local shelter. She's a larger shepherd mix. Our male is a 2 year old heeler.

95% of the time, they get along wonderfully. As she's gotten older, though, I've noticed her have a little food aggression. Not towards humans, and only if I give one a treat and not the other or she's guarding a bone or something like that (so that was probably my fault). I feed them next to each other and it's no problem. I caught her being aggressive and biting him a few times, scolded her, and it hasn't been an issue.

Now she's started doing the same aggressive behavior over the furniture. She'll get on the furniture, I'll tell her to get down, and if my male is anywhere nearby she'll go for him almost like she's mad. I THINK it's a dominance thing? It's happened only a few times so far. I do think the heeler is contributing to the problem because whenever I tell her to get off the furniture he always seems to be right underneath her waiting. It's also only ever happened when I'm also right next to them, so it might be a jealousy/affection thing.

Every time it happens I scold her and make her leave the room. It's really only a second of aggression. Luckily, my male is not dominant at all and when she acts like a dick he just retreats and gives her a wide berth for a while. But I don't want her being a bully, and it's really startling because she'll snarl and bite (to the point that he's yelped a few times, but never drawn blood or seriously injured him).

Any advice?

Do you guys ever feel guilt for the pets you've put down?

I had my 15ish year old mini poodle put down in November. I think about him a lot and fear that he didnt feel loved in his last months. We drifted apart a lot as he aged. He just seemed to not know what was going on, and our day to day life got complicated. Almost all of our last experiences were filled with stress and I hate it.

I couldnt take him to the groomer anymore because he got depressed for days afterwards and had started attacking the groomers. I tried groom him at home because he was getting super matted. One day I was trying to get him to lie down so the haircut would be easier on his joints and the floor was slippery and he did a split. He let out an awful scream, and I think about it a lot. He got back up, but his little scream haunts me.

I had to carry him up and down the stairs multiple times a day or he would hurt himself trying, but he hated being carried.

He peed himself a lot and I was constantly having to change his diapers and wipe him down. He hated it.

He stopped cuddling and for the most part would avoid being in the same room as me.

Near the very end, he was flinching every time he was touched. I dont know if it was from the dementia, or because he became afraid of me.

We had him put down in home. He bit the vet and screamed when the needle pierced his skin. Then he peed, maybe out of fear. I think about that a lot.

We used to be so close when he was younger. We snuggled all of the time, and he was so well trained and understood when things needed to happen and trusted me. I dont even think he knew I loved him when he died, if he even knew who I was.

He could still walk around and was mobile, so sometimes I wonder if I even made the right decision. Like maybe a better owner could have made it work and made him feel as loved as he was?

I feel like I failed him and I cant stop the guilt. I miss him a lot. He deserved better.

ESAs and how they work?

My partner and I recently signed a lease for an apartment in Wisconsin. I have a long and storied history with anxiety/depression and have been trying to register my cat as an emotional support animal for two years but my university made it too difficult to collect all of the paperwork and have her in the dorms, especially because I'm from out of state. I've looked into registering her online but all of the websites seem to be kinda sketchy and too money hungry for my taste. What's your experience in having an emotional support animal? What sort of legal things am I likely to run into with my landlord and waiving pet fees?

tldr: I'm depresso expresso and finally have a decent living situation to have a cat. Looking for any advice on emotional support animals and the legalese that comes with them.

Tips for training my kitten/cat?

Hey, I'm the proud owner of a 10 month old kitty named Raven. Very sweet, but extremely intelligent cat. His intelligence makes it difficult to train him. We're thinking he's part Bombay due to his intelligent, completely black all over including paw pads and nose, and big golden eyes.

Anyway, let me just go in depth on his intelligence. When we got him as 3 month old kitten, he was very very skinny. He was being fostered with 18 other kittens, leading me to believe he might've been getting bullied off of food by the other kittens. Even today he's a complete softy and gets pushed around.

That's led to a big obsession with food. I've tried everything to lessen it. Give him a constant supply of dry food, giving him scheduled meals, nothing worked. Still obsessed. When he finishes his helping of wet food, he just breaks into the fridge and eats whatever we have in there. That could be leftovers, ham, prawns, anything. And yes, he opens the fridge himself, with his paw. I've videod him doing it. There's no handle on our fridge, you only need to pull it; he learned that very quickly by watching us and now he opens it himself and is a total nightmare.

He also eats anything he can find. Seeing him eating scraps from the floor isn't uncommon, and just today he started eating my DRY muesli like it was cat food!!! Wtf? It's also impossible cooking or baking around him. He watched my every move and starts lapping at the dough, batter, and tries to get into boiling hot pans if I let him. I have to remove him from the kitchen and then he starts yowling at the door.

How would I go about training him out of this obsession?|

Another thing; he doesnt' listen to me. I'd like to get him to come when he's called, but the only way of making that happen is rattling a box of treats. He's able to get into a box or a bag of treats (I left a box of Whiskas treats with him, you know the kind shaped like a cat face, he genuinely managed to get the lid off, rip off the plastic at the top, and start nomming the treats within 10 minutes) so he doesnt listen to me if I offer him treats. Because he knows he can just go find the box and get all the treats he wants.

I'm kinda at a loss. He's just too clever. Otherwise, he's very sweet and very very vocal, always chirping and trilling at me. He's super gentle and never, ever scratches or bites out of malice - only when he's playing will he give my ankles little kitten nibbles. Any tips on what to do?

Cat chewing plastic litter tray liner

We got cats for the first time two weeks ago. One of our cats likes to chew plastic, particularly the litter tray liner. Are there non-plastic litter tray liners we could use? Can't find any 🙈

D/D cat food alternatives?

My cat has a skin condition. He scratches his back till it is sore and red. The vet prescribed this d/d cat food but it is $70 a bag and it only lasts a month!! I cant afford this. I noticed on the back of the bag that the only real difference from normal cat food is the vitamins. B12, Vitamin E, and fish oils. And some others. Im wondering if there is a cheaper alternative or if i can simply feed him fish oil pills (and or other pills that you might recommend) with his meal. This cat is fine besides the scratching and it isnt helping at all. Its still sore and red. Thanks for your input

What's a good interactive pet for someone who works full time? No dogs and ABSOLUTELY NO CATS.

Looking for a pet that's hands on

Can go to stores like Lowes, Tractor Supply

Not necessary but can spend time outdoors

I have no allergies

Yes I've own pets before and quite familiar with vet bills

Thought about a pig but looking to see if I missed anything?

Male cat being too rough with female cat. Help me with the introduction process!!

Hi all, this is a kind of cross post with added info. (TL;DR at the end)

We adopted a new cat for our resident male cat (Walter). In my last post I said he was six months old but I checked his adoption papers and hes actually 8 months now. He is very sweet, social, and playful- he can get rough sometimes but never aggressive.

We adopted the 1 year old female cat (who we just renamed as Phoebe). In my last post I explain how friendly they were in the initial steps of introduction. Wally saw the new cat before I could get her in her own separated space- no hissing at all. Phoebe would rub up against the door and all in all seemed totally fine, Wally would scratch at the door (like he's trying to get in) with no hissing yet.

The second step we put Wally in his bed carrier with the door slightly open so he didn't feel trapped ( we incorporated lots of treats). I was so excited because there was no hissing, growling, or upright hair. Wally did stick his paw out and tap her but it seemed more curious than scared. The new cat rubbed up against the carrier.

After the separation and scent introduction my fiance and I held each cat in our lap and let them smell/lick each other. Phoebe was purring and Wally was licking her/ nibbling? He did tap her with his paw, no nails, and to me it seemed playful.

We let them roam on our laps and he gripped her neck with his paw and bit under her neck, which seemed sort of playful .(no upright hair, ears normal, no hissing or growling) The second time he did this was a little more rough and made me worried. She gave a little hiss and I separated him.

Today I tried by myself and brought both of them onto the bed, giving them treats when they laid close to each other. Wally seems like he wants to play. Phoebe purrs when around him, which is good- there was no hissing.

Wally still is being too rough and will bite her neck/ under her neck and then roughly groom her head. she didn't his but did let out a sad little meow while swatting at him- no nails.

Someone said they could be playing but Wally biting under her neck really worries me. They're both good cats- I've already fallen in love with phoebe and would hate for this to not work out. I don't think he knows how to play gently.

What can I do, does this sound okay? Am I being over dramatic? they haven't shared floor space yet, when should I try this?

TL;DR: I'm afraid my male resident cat (8 months) is playing too rough with my new female cat (1 year old). How do I stop this? and how do I continue the introduction process?

Dry over wet?

Hi guys! Just wanted to check in with you guys! My cat actually prefers dry food over wet food. I’m not sure why. Is this normal? Or should I be concerned about it?

Introductions

Okay so I have 2 dogs. A 2 year old lab/pit mix (Kitty)and a 2 month old great Dane/great Pyrenees puppy(Effie) . They get along fine. But we just got a cat (Cami) she is a couple years old and the sweetest thing ever. But terrified of dogs. I've introduced her to Effie and that went okay. But I'm scared to introduce her to Kitty. Kitty is a great dog. Loves people. But is protective and jealous of other animals. She growls at new dogs bad. Scary bad. But she has never actually hurt another dog. She has left half a dead rabbit on our front porch before but idk if she killed if or found it. Anyways, Cami is currently staying in my bedroom and the room beside it that's connected so that the dogs can't get to her. Any advice on meeting? Or should I just keep Cami in here unless Kitty is outside?

Is it easier to introduce kittens to a puppy or the other way around?

As the title says! Me and my girlfriend are wanting to get 2 siamese kittens a black labrador puppy... However we don't know which way round to do this.... Do we buy the cats first or the dog first? Does anyone have any advice as to which would be the safest and easiest way to introduce the animals to one another? Do we buy the cats first and let them acclimitse or the other way around? Does it even matter!?

Got scratched by a stray cat.

So two days ago I found a cat on the streets and tried to pet it. The cat got annoyed and scratched me to run away. The next day I went to the doctor who said it's a minor scratch and don't need any anti rabies shot for it. I got post exposure anti rabies shots three years back. Should I still insist the doctor on getting the shots?

Did you know!

According to tests made at the Institute for the Study of Animal Problems in Washington, D.C., dogs and cats, like people, are either right-handed or left-handed—that is, they favor either their right or left paws.

Has anyone used insurance for behavioral issues?

I have a 1 year old rottweiler who is out of control. I have ASPCA and they say that it’s only covered if the service is provided by a certified behaviorist. There are none in my area, would it cover aggression modification if my vet refers me to a certified trainer?

What do you feed your cat?

I was feeding my kittens purina, and they were obsessed with it, but it was making them go to the bathroom constantly, and their poop wasn’t normal.

Now I am giving them kitten meow mix(I gradually changed it-mixed the two together) and they are not impressed.

What do you guys feed your kitties? Iams? Science diet?

Our Puppy [8 Months Old] is whining or crying slightly when getting up or being set down

We have an 8 Month Old Puppy (Hound/Beagle/German Shep) who has just recently started crying out briefly in pain on a few occasions. He weighs about 40-45 pounds.

1). When we return home, and he gets up out of the kennel he cries as if his legs hurt. He only cries briefly, and otherwise acts normal. (In this case, we are sure it is not his "legs falling asleep")

2). When we go to pick him up, he cries as we lift or set down, but seemingly as a result of a pain in his legs/paws. I can hold him or cradle him without him crying out further.

3). He has displayed a brief limp, on one of his back legs, but it seems to be largely inconsistent. As in, usually not present.

Further Details

  • For the most part, he acts normal. He still eats with gusto, and is still willing to play with his brothers. As an example, he still runs and plays outside (no crying then), but he may be a little more solitary/wants to left more alone when coming inside (although he's not completely wanting to be isolated).

  • We have checked him over for any issues or signs. I have stretched each of his legs/paws, massaged and pressured his hips, and checked his spine--with no crying out or negative reaction from him.

  • This has been going on for approximately two days now, so it's possible he just pulled something. Obviously we would love to take him to the vet, but financially that is impossible for us as we are also saving for a child that is on the way.

What do you guys recommend?

How can I help a grieving friend

My classmate was with me when I found out my mom had cancer. He held my hand, let me cry, and did the best he could to console me. He has forever earned a special place in my heart. Today he was trying to leave class and I jokingly was blocking the door when he tried to leave. He asked me if he could have a hug and I gave him one and asked if he was ok, noticing something was off as he’s a very quiet person who mostly keeps to himself in school. He told me his cat, and best friend of 16 years has to be put down today. I had a moment where I of course sputtered out I’m so sorry and I made him give me another hug because I truly lacked the words to comfort him. So here I am asking reddit how I can help my friend. Do I get him drunk, or send him some good poetry, leave him to grieve in peace?? I know what it’s like to lose your best friend because I lost my therapy dog who literally saved me from myself a few years ago and I still cry about it to this day. I never talked to anyone about how much it hurt me and I don’t want my classmate to go through it alone. I made sure he had a ride and someone to go with him and he did. Open to suggestions, if anything at all thanks for reading.
