Dog not eating/drinking after getting hurt

My dog, 7yr Shih Tzu, broke his nail the other day, we wrapped it up with a sock. And he hasn't been eating or drinking anything since, and he is licking his paw constantly, I'm worried for him, how can I get him to eat and drink something, any advice?

Something I didn’t realize came with getting a dog

Growing up we had a family dog. We had him since I was 9 (now 23) and he passed when I was 21. My entire family chipped in taking care of him, mainly my older sister and myself. About a year after he passed I felt ready to get my own dog. I wasn’t concerned or worried because I felt like I knew a solid amount already having grown up with one. But wow this dog came with so much new information!! My first dog was about 20lbs, my current dog is 75lbs. That in itself makes a huge difference. The energy levels are completely different, the training (seriously the training!!!!) is completely different. Anyways this list goes on and on and I know now every dog’s needs are going to be different, there’s no basic set of rules.

Auggie (my current dog) is my best friend. He was an absolutely terrible puppy with extremely high energy levels. (Seriously it’s next level, even the vet was shocked). Anyways I worked extremely hard to train him and spend every day thinking about things we can do to burn his energy (on top of sending him to daycare 2-3 times a week). In a nutshell, Auggie is always by my side and most of my day to day activities are planned with him in mind. He is my best friend. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED my first dog. He had been with me through majority of my childhood but he truly loved my mom the most out of all of us. With Auggie it’s different because he’s not the family dog he’s MY dog. So here it is, the huge thing I didn’t realize came with getting my own dog ..... was pet owner anxiety. For example, every time he eats something that could possibly block him, I STRESS and I watch his poops like a HAWK and only start to feel relaxed once I get 3 days of regular poop with 0 throw ups. On Thursday he was diagnosed with Kennel cough (yes he’s vaccinated against it, they can still get it), he was coughing consistently for one day straight (wednesday) and then Thursday (the day he went to the vet) it just stopped, now he randomly has diarrhea, which started Saturday. UGHHHH normally when he has any issues, he goes to the vet, he comes back with a treatment plan and is better. I feel like the pet owner anxiety has been non stop for a whole week now - is this what it’s like when you have kids except 24/7 😂. I think I get stressed because with dogs everything is always more serious. Your dog is coughing? Take him to the vet. Your dog has diarrhea? Take him to the vet. Eyes are itchy? Take him to the vet. So you see, every time my dog has what would be a small symptom for a human, for a dog it’s not small and I immediately go into “should I take him to the vet and pay $100” mode?! What if I wait too long before taking him to the vet? What if the vet misdiagnoses him? What if I lose him at the young, innocent age of 1 all because I didn’t take him to the vet fast enough?? Does anybody else feel this way?!?!? I know in general I’m a pretty paranoid person (as I’m sure you could tell if you got this far in the post), but I’m hoping other people can relate.

TLDR; I never knew pet owner anxiety was a thing until I experienced it first hand!! How do you deal with it? Every time my dog gets a little bit sick I’m STRESSED. Does anybody else feel this way???

Kitten Afraid of Christmas Tree

Hi all,

I have a 4 month old kitten and he is generally really playful and friendly. He likes to be around us humans as much as possible. Well, on Saturday I decided to put up the tree in the living room and he's so scared of it that he won't enter the room and will only get about 10 feet away in the other rooms connected to it. It's been two days and if I get too close to the tree with him he begins to claw and run away. He's been hiding under the bed after he gets into closer contact with the tree. Any ideas on how/if he will get used to this? I think if he doesn't feel comfortable in a week I might take the tree down. Any tips would be appreciated.

[Help] Getting a dog in a house with a cat with cerebellar hypoplasia (Wobbly Cat Syndrome) (x-post /r/dogs)

I was looking for some input regarding my family's situation right now. We are heavily considering getting a dog (a puppy), but we have a cat with cerebellar hypoplasia. In case you don't know, this is a disease where the cerebellum of the cat isn't fully developed, so they have a bit of trouble walking and can't really jump up. The cat can run, but it's very erratic running.

My fear is if we get a dog, there is a chance that this cat will be seen as prey and I kind of fear for my cat's life. Is this a genuine concern? I hear stories of dogs attacking and killing cats all the time, is getting a dog not appropriate with a cat with this condition?

I'm a first time pet owner looking to adopt two cats. Looking for any advice based on my situation.

I live alone and have always been in love with cats. I think it's finally time to get some!

I have a busy job and am usually away from 8 am to 6 pm and I work some weekends. For that reason, I want two cats so they aren't lonely. I would prefer cats that are more affectionate. The more cuddles the better. Vet and toy costs aren't an issue if that changes anything.

Based on my situation, what would you guys recommend?

Certain age for the cats (I'd prefer them younger so I have more years with them and can get train them but im open to older cats)? Get siblings? Certain things I should do to get ready? Should I adopt at a rescue? Foster? Breeder?

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Some help with an older dog potty training.

So I adopted a 5 year old yorkie yesterday. It may be older but there is no gray hairs. It doesn't use the bathroom outside or use a pee pad. It just pees in random spots in the kitchen. Well it used the pee pad twice in 24 hours and peed like 6 times around the kitchen in other spots..he will pee in the kitchen after going outside. The last owner (who I now think lies) said he was house broken. I work during the day that's why I got an older dog and not a puppy. I know this will take awhile for him to get adjusted and he seems nervous. Does anyone have any tips for me to try and get him used to pee pad? I'm gone like 9 hours a day 4 days a week. I am sure he can't hold it that long. I was really fooled with this it looks like. I'm trying to make it comfortable for the little guy and I don't want to scare him anymore then he already is. He will see my vet in a few days. Has anyone gone through something like this? I'm so anxious because of it.

What am I doing wrong?

Indoor cats got fleas sometime around November 9 or 10. They were treated with drops on November 11. And then had two capstar pills, November 16 and November 18. The house has been sprayed with IGR spray on 4 separate days, any blankets they laid on were thrown out, their beds were thrown out. Anything else that could be washed, was washed.

Last night I noticed one of my cats scratching quite a bit so I decided to check him. And he had tiny little fleas on him, we gave them both the last capstar pill, and about 15 more fell off of him.

I’ve been told by multiple people not to worry; give them more drops on December 11 and continue to vacuum as much as I possibly can. It can take a few months to fully clear this up - is this correct? Should I be doing more? I don’t know what else to do.

Looking for an indoor pet; is it always immoral for it to stay indoors?

I love animals and have grown up surrounded by cats. Now I am living in the big city, in an apartment without a garden. I've always had this inner feeling of wanting an animal buddy, who I can care for and make happy.
Would there by ANY pet that can live with me that doesn't mind not getting outside (much) ? I don't have easy acces to the outside world, but I would love taking it with me on a walk and such. I know (most) dogs and cats need to be outside, but I have friends who keep their cat indoors all the time. Is it always bad/immoral to keep an animal inside?

How often should a chihuahua be fed?

My chihuahua is about 13 weeks old. (12 weeks, six days.) My mother insists that she is fed 8 times a day, every three hours. I keep missing one shift during the night, and both of my parents are a bit mad at me for it. My question is: how often does a chihuahua have to be fed, in actuality?

For reference, I missed the 1 AM and fed her just a bit ago, at 4 AM, so she’s only getting fed once tonight. She seemed very hungry and ate a lot during this; I can’t help thinking she ate a bit too much, but she seems okay. This dog also gets NutriCal at least once a day and a few homemade treats (meat, eggs, flour— all cooked). (The last time she was offered food was around 9 PM, last night. I can’t recall whether or not she took some.)

So anyway, with all this in mind: how much should a 13 week old chihuahua puppy be fed?

My cat is chill with the new kitten, but the kitten is not :(

Hello, this is my first time posting here on reddit (please be nice :c) My resident cat is already a 1 year old male and I noticed that he keeps wanting to go outside to play with the neighbor cat. So I thought of getting a new cat/kitten for him as his companion so I recently got a new female kitten that is approximately 3-4mo old. My cat seems to be welcoming with the kitten (with of course having a few hisses in the first meeting since he just wants to sniff around stuffs when we got home). I haven't let them meet each other in close proximity (where they would easily reach each other). But I let them see each other in a distance while I entertain the kitten with a cat wand and toys, while my cat just observes silently. I also exchange their scents by exchanging collars and blankets. My cat has been 'chirping' or meowing in a high pitched meow and he also slowly blinks at her and sleeps while she stares at him. But my kitten keeps growling and hissing at him if wants to check her out. It somehow resulted for my cat to be somewhat submissive, which makes me sad about it since he just wanted to greet the kitten. But the kitten is not mean to me or anything and seems to like my presence. What could I do to stop the kitten from being mean to my older cat? I just want them to get along :(

Should I put this kitten in a shelter?

Hi everyone,

I was hoping I could get some other opinions on what I should do about my current situation. I'm really having a tough time and this really stressing me out.

I'm currently a 21 year old college student, and I'm staying with my parents during this winter break. I have a job lined up in the same town that my parent's live, and I'm planning on staying with them for at least 6 months before moving to my own place (since I might get some other positions).

Recently, I've been thinking about getting a cat. However, I like to think of myself as a pretty planned person. A pet is a lifelong commitment, and proper research and care must be done before you can just get one. For me, research can take anywhere between 2-3 months since I like to do a combination of internet research and opinions (friends, volunteers at shelters, etc)

With that in mind, I did tell my brother I was interested in getting a cat. Coincidentally, he also wanted a cat... but he actually got his (except, he got a kitten)! However, 2ish weeks later, he texted me saying that essentially, he couldn't take care of the kitten due to roommate troubles. He asked me if I wanted the kitten. I responded like so: "I do want a cat, but I haven't done the proper research... so even if she is adorable, I don't know if I'd be able to take care of her".

He kept pushing me, telling me she isn't a lot of work, and cats are low maintenance animals, trying to persuade me into keeping the cat. However, I did not say yes immediately because for me, getting a pet should be on my own terms.

2 weeks later, he announces that he's coming back to our parent's house for Thanksgiving break. I warned him that our parents wouldn't take kindly to a cat. I also tell him that I don't think he should bring the cat home intending to leave her with me. However, he still brings this cat home, against what my parents and I have said.

As such, we don't have anything proper set up -- no cat bed, no litter box, no food, no toys -- ready for the kitten. He brings her home, assuring he us he knows what to do, and we believe him. Otherwise, how else has he cared for this kitten? He describes that we should take her upstairs and set her up in one room. He doesn't consider the fact that she can easily fall off the stairs (between the railings) if she is frightened or startled.

When he brings her home, we find out more and more about the kitten. It turns out my brother got her very young, around 1 week old. In addition, I believe he did not care for her well. He did not feed her at a routine time, or play with her at routine times. I believe his friend did much of the bottle feeding for him at first. In addition, the way he played with her way very rough... lots of yelling and playing with hands (!!) especially. Furthermore, he even went on to throw her in the air during play.

The kitten is currently 9 weeks old. After doing my research, I find out that apparently, kittens are not supposed to be separated from their mother and other kittens until 8 weeks. I've learned that this is how kittens are properly socialized and know how to inhibit their bite. Furthermore, I've learned that between 2-9 weeks is the sensitive period for socialization, where the cat learns to socialize with people and pets alike, and what's acceptable for play.

I personally believe that the way my brother treated this kitten has made her more aggressive (towards hands, at least) and more anxious. I say this because I think the kitten enjoys my company: she meows when I'm not with her, and she likes to spend nights in my room. She sleeps on me and purrs on me, and licks my face. However, even when I walk towards her while she's playing, she gets up and runs, without fail. I've tried teaching her not to bite hands or feet (by saying "No" very firmly, stopping her, and redirecting her to a toy. If she continues, I leave the room.)

But I seriously think I am not ready to take care of a kitten. I love this kitten to death, but even I understand they are a lot of work. Honestly speaking, I would've preferred to adopt an adult cat. I think my brother should take care of her, but again he doesn't want to.

I am seriously considering putting her in a shelter, but I feel so bad doing so. This kitten didn't do anything wrong, she's just being a kitten! Am I such terrible person for thinking this? Should I just stick it out? I feel so hurt inside just thinking about her going to a shelter, but I also know I might not be able to take care of her.

I might be overreacting, but I'm just torn up inside thinking about this.

Please help me out!

Should I adopt a kitten if I might not be able to be with him/her after a year or two for a few years?

I have been wanting to get a cat for years and I have been following an adoption centre for quiet some months. I am thinking of adopting one when a new one needs a home. I am 19(M) and I may go abroad for studies for a few years and if I adopt a kitten now, I might not be able to see the kitten for a few years or I might just take with me if I find a way.

But the problem is if I dont find a way to take the cat with me, I will probably be too emotionally invested to leave without the cat. And the cat might be distressed as well(?).

I am in a pretty bad mental health myself and I really feel like having a kitten around would do good to both.

Should I adopt a cat and risk having to leave without her? Idk I feel like I know the answer that I shouldnt adopt but my heart doesnt want to believe it. So, I want someone to confirm it for me. Please help.

Kitten pooped on our bed

New rescue kitten, 11wks old. Vax up to date, wormed and flea-d etc. Home with us since Friday. She’s really confident and sassy. She’s been eating great, using the litter tray. She is getting used to the dog and slept in with the kids. She’s comfy with us and will play happily and purrs loads when we scritch her. We have two litter trays, one upstairs and one downstairs. She has used both a few times before. Her food is downstairs but she has two bowls (well, plates) of water, one upstairs and one downstairs.

At 6am, she came to our bed and was scratching the blanket. I didn’t twig what was happening until I heard a farty noise and a smell hit me. We cleaned it up, I picked her up immediately and put her in the litter tray just outside our door. She would have had to come past the litter tray from any other room to get to our bed.

She’s since been fine, ate up all her brekkie, chased the dogs tail and drank some water.

Any ideas what’s going on? What are we doing wrong?

Is playing chase the cat with my kitten a thing or is she genuinely scared of me?

Like this lil devil really likes me, I can pick him up and pet him whenever I want but sometimes he waits for me and then keeps running away. I run after him thinking it's a game and after a short while we are all chill again. Is this genuinely a way to play with kittens ? I'm unsure because I think he is a little slow in the head and maybe he just has his 5 minutes where he is actually scared of me lol

Can I give four-month-old cats kitten formula?

I have two kittens (sisters) I adopted about a month ago. I would say now they’re probably about four months old, but both of them have a habit of holding onto the finger of the person holding them with both paws and licking/biting the tip of the finger while massaging it with their paws as if they’re trying to nurse. Does these mean they want some form of milk, or is it simply a leftover habit? And if they are still craving milk, at what age is the cutoff for giving cats kitten formula?

Dog is fixated as if there’s a female dog in heat, even though all the females are fixed. Any advice?

Hi, this is my first post to this sub and I end some advice. This may be a long question, haha.

My 14 month old Sammy is behaving as if there’s a female dog in heat nearby. He keeps whining, randomly barking, panting heavily, and keeps looking into our back yard. He wont respond to his name or commands like “leave it” or “stop.” He can’t seem to relax and is pacing around my room as I write this. I’ve closed the door so that he cannot see the outside, or smell whatever potential hormones are in the air. He’s also taken to humping our gardener, who takes care of the dogs that reside in our back yard.

A bit of background:

We live with a lot of dogs at home, some of which only live in our yard and some of which only go outside when they need to potty. The “outside dogs” are three Aspins (Philippine name for street dogs). The “inside dogs” consist of two Yorkies, 2 Samoyeds, and 1 Aspin. Only the Yorkies and Samoyeds are intact.

The female Yorkie’s last heat was a little over a month ago.

The “outside dogs” were only fixed as recently as a month and a half ago, and two fo them are female (both of which are 2 years plus in age).

What could be the reason behind this, if most of the dogs are fixed? Is there a way I can get him to calm down, or stop this behavior all together?

Help! Kitten peeing on carpet!

Hi there! I am in need of some help. one of my 5 month old kittens keeps peeing on the carpet near the front door. when we noticed that behavior we knew she was in heat showing the other signs as well so we got her and her sister spayed. They’re now both spayed and she’s still peeing on the carpet, not in the same spot but about a foot away. I have tried every cleaning product, spraying citrus juice, etc, and i cant figure out how to get her to stop doing it. there is 2 little boxes and they are cleaned out at least once a day, usually more. New cat is very low-energy, is this normal?

I adopted a 1-year old female cat this past Friday from the Humane Society. She had just gotten her shots and spay surgery done last week and has been wearing a cone around her neck. She's been adjusting well to the apartment; she seems to get along with my other cat and has been making her way around just fine. She doesn't seem to be scared/in hiding.

However, I've noticed that she just likes to... sit around all day. She will play when I engage it, but she has really shown no interest in playing with my other cat. She doesn't seem all too responsive either, like I will call for her and make noises but she won't even bat an ear. Sometimes she will just stare at a wall. I'm wondering if she's just hurting from her stitches and doesn't want to move too much.

Of course, she could just be a naturally low-energy/chill cat. I just kind of find her temperament a little different because I've had a handful of cats (even "shy" ones) and none have been as low-energy as this one, especially in their new home/a new environment. She's young too so I kind of expected her to be more alert and engaging. Has anyone else brought home a cat like this?

Kitten keeps climbing the Christmas tree and attacking the ornaments. How do i stop her from harming herself and ruining the tree?

My kitten is 7 months old and is a sweetheart. I rescued her from a shelter in June and she has made my life so much better. She is very energetic and playful to the extreme sometimes, but for the most part she is always behaved as much as a kitten could possibly be. My mom loves Christmas and as soon as Thanksgiving passed, she set up the tree and decorated it with a bunch of ornaments she recently bought. My kitten immediately noticed and has been attacking the tree ever since it went up. Sometimes she just plays with ornaments that are lowest to the ground and other times she literally climbs up it. My mom is definitely not too happy about it because the tree and ornaments were pretty expensive altogether and my little sister has already broken some of her new decorations. My kitten tries to bite the lights on it and goes inside of the tree and starts climbing up it.

I don't want her harming herself since biting the lights and glass ornaments could obviously be dangerous for her if they end up breaking. Its so bad to the point where she can't even be in the living room because she goes straight for the tree. I know things like yelling at her or spraying her with water would not be effective at all and will just make her scared and confused. Is there anything that could repel her from the tree? I love having her in the living room with me, but she won't stop climbing the tree and i have no clue on how to try to get her to stop.

Buying a puppy over the internet advice

I am looking into buying a puppy from another state. I live in Alaska and have had no luck finding this specific (my mom’s dream) breed for sale in my state for quite some time now. I got in contact with a breeder in another state, and she said she has a brand new litter and a litter to be born this week. And we could get the dog towards the end of January with a flight nanny. She seems like a nice lady and has lots of pictures of her and the dogs on her website. It seems legit. I guess I’m just worried how do I go about responsibly buying a puppy off the internet. What questions do I ask? What research should I do on this breeder? How do I know I will be getting my dog? How trustworthy is this breeder? No pictures yet as the litter hasn’t been born yet, and the price is quite an investment. I have looked online for more info about this breeder, all I found was her+dogs hanging out with another breeder who specifically mentioned her by name and her business name. I do not know anyone living close enough to the breeder to check it out for me. Thank you!

Cat I've had for three weeks is peeing outside the litter box?

I adopted a a one year old female spayed cat from the shelter three weeks ago. I do have a dog that I have tried to properly introduce her to and they are slowly getting along. Cat has been using litter box which is in a seperate room (dog doesn't go in) until two days ago she has started peeing and pooping specifically in my dogs bed. I took her to the vet yesterday and the vet said she's in good health I obviously have not punished her and clean it right away. I clean her litter box daily. Is she trying to mark a territory? Does she dislike my dog? They coexist in the same areas and I do not let my dog chase her. I need some advice as I'm being a little frustrated!!

Cat acts like a toy is her kitten?

We got a little fox toy from IKEA, my cat pays an unusual amount of attention to it, she licks it, cuddles it just like she did when she had kittens (they passed away) she also picks it up in her mouth like a mother cat does and brings it to me while meowing. The same thing happened when she had her kittens, she cuddled them, licked them but couldnt feed them so she kept bringing them to me and leaving. whats going on?

Are there any early red flags that an older cat may never tolerate the new kitten?

Scared to read answers to this one. Its only the first night but my 3 year old has hissed not only when close to her, but also ran away from me when smelling her scent on my hands. Is that particularly worrying?

Also, I know it can take months gradually but what is a worrying amount of time to see zero improvement?

Huge problem with my cat - please help me i can't take it anymore

yesterday in the evening i adopted a 3 month old kitty. ive read many articules threads online about havin a cat and was sure that i can be a good mother for it - the internet convinced me

my familys reaction was really negative and they said that from there i should spend 8h to play with it clean after it etc otherwise ''theyre gonna get rid of it ''

so i played with it for like 4h and then immediately started to worrying is this place that adequate for the kitten to stay in? also ive got pretty bored after playing with it this huge amount of time instead of studying for an exam

from that moment ive been having ''puppy blues'' and couldnt stop regreting adopting it - even asked my mother if we can return it back to the previous owners - because from my point of view they were more ''prepared'' for the cat and know how to deal with it

she started to explain how the cat soon [when its gonna grow up a little] wont be that energic as it is now and that i should just take care of it for 10 months

because of that fact ive got in huge mourning that i wont be having any spare time for me

and went to sleep with hope that it wont interfere anyhow with me while im sleeping

but that wasnt in the case therefore it started even botherin me and wakin me up every 20 minutes - i just started fucking crying like a baby and tried to make it sleep in its own bed but it rejected doing what i wanted for me to be the best and even started to messing up with my sleep - it tried to sleep on my face and was purring very loud

my house isnt that big so i cant move it on to the another room - except the cold bathroom

im so scared that the cat will do something to itself when ill be sleeping with the closed doors

ive many dangerous things in my house that my parents dont want to get rid of so i suppose thats why im so scared

today ive found out that the cat has twisted leg - vet told us and my parents started to treat it very good for unknown reason and i started to blame myself for the cats health- but for my parents maybe they understood that the cat isnt that big problem FOR THEM [it got twisted ankle because it was jumping all over the place]

Now the main questions are: what should i do especially with the sleep problem? how much should i play with it? right now its lying till now on the bed while doing nothing because of the leg i really dont want to give it back now when i think about it but i dont want to have any problems with my mental health

PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE

How to heal cats wound?

I found a 2 month old cat I'm guessing her age but she seems around that age...she has been eating well and getting more affectionate with me. She's outside because my current cat is inside and doesn't like her.

However she has a wound on her leg, it about 1 inch long and you can see her bone or at least that's what it looks like. It's not bleeding or anything and it looks like it's been there a while. She walks fine but I wonder if I can do anything to make it heal faster?

Taking her to the vet is not an option right now because the appointments they have are months in advance and even if I could I'm not sure how much they'll charge me and I work minimum wage barely enough money to survive. Any advice on what to use please? Is hydrogen peroxide okay for cats?

Dog puking only in the early morning?

This has been an ongoing issue since adopting my dog. She's been to four different veterinarians, twice exclusively for this issue, and they always tell me that she's healthy and to change the food she's eating.

I've changed her food twice now. She stopped puking completely with one of the foods, but seemed itchy all the time. The other food resulted in vomiting again.

She pukes around 4:30AM - 10AM. It's always stomach bile and no foodstuff. Late night snacks don't seem to resolve the issue. She doesn't eat random stuff or grass and only seems to feel sick immediately before and after puking.

This has been an ongoing issue for the past year. Anyone experienced this issue before? I feel pretty defeated at this point- especially because she's been to so many different veterinarians.

Ringworm on cats help!

I apologize for the long post. I’m in need of some advice. My fiancée and I have been put through the ringer with ringworm. About 6 weeks ago we rescued a little kitten who was outside, starving and cold. We have a 2 year old cat at home already so before we even brought the kitten into our home with our cat we took her to the vet to be examined. They said she was perfectly clear and healthy. We brought her into our home and our cats quickly became attached to one another. About 2 weeks after bringing her in I noticed red rings all over my body. I was COVERED. I went to my family doctor who then diagnosed me with ringworm. I was BLOWN away. I’ve never really known anyone who has had ringworm. So doing the right thing again, I brought the kitten back to the vet. Explaining to them that I got diagnosed with ringworm and the kitten was brought into our home. The vet then did a lamp test on the kitten and the kitten came up negative. So she sent her home. About 3 days after that my 2 year old cat started getting lesions on his head... I knew immediately. So I called the vet AGAIN and brought him in as soon as I could. He CLEARLY was showing symptoms and they came rapid and horrible looking. The vet sent us home with topical and shampoo. Long story short the kitten was asymptomatic and infected us all with ringworm. My fiancée and I are completely devastated. This has taken a huge toll on us. My poor 2 year old cat has huge scabs on his face, ears, chin and by his eyes. All we do is clean constantly and apply ointment to the cats and bathe them. It doesn’t seem to be getting much better. We have spent so much money already at the vet for ringworm and we just don’t see improvements. They don’t want to put them on oral because of their age and the side effects that come with oral anti fungal. I was looking online and read a lot about lime sulfer dips so we ordered it because at this point we are willing to try anything. For anyone who has dealt with ringworm in cats and knows anything about it can you tell me what are some things you may have done for your cats that successfully cured it? Does the lime sulfer dip work? How long did It take for ringworm to go away? I am feeling so defeated from ringworm, we love our cats so much so this has been very hard. I am hoping to hear some success stories as well. Thank you in advance!

How do I become closer to a distant pet?

My parents are split, so I only see my dad on the weekends. He has a dog, and since I only see him twice a week, I feel like we're not as close as we could be. I know he enjoys my company, because he likes to lay on top of me when I'm around, and greets me very happily. That aside, I still feel like we don't connect as much as we could. Any tips?

My frenchie ignores me at bedtime

I am the primary care taker of my 2 year old frenchie. Every night when my husband and I go to bed she snuggles with him and won’t come to me. Even will go out of her way not to lay with me (during the day will). Once we turn the lights out she will then come over and go under my blanket. Why does she gives me the cold shoulder prior?

Curious Cat Question

So i have a cat, his names Loki and we took him from a family who diddnt want him 13 months ago (he was a kitten) He isnt the slightest bit affectionate, never purrs and doesnt like being touched (results in bites and scratches, but i can still pick him up to move him, not for too long though)

Yet he sleeps on my bed with me and on my feet sometimes, follows me around and stays in the same room as me mostly

My question is why does he sleep with me and follow me but wont let me pet him at all?

Thinking about declawing my cat :(

Not sure the best place to put this question so i'll try here. I'm going to get some hate but here goes.

I know that it is painful for them and how bad it is. I just don't know what else to do at this point!

My kitten is just barely a year old now. His whole life he has been a scratcher. He targets the carpet the most and we rent so this really stresses me out. He's been with us since he was 3 weeks old I'm not sure if missing out on time with his mom has something to do with his behavior.

He scratches for attention. I've tried everything. Ignoring him (which is really difficult again we rent and i can't let him do more damage), spraying him doesn't work. He can be practically soaking wet before he cares. I use anti scratch sprays they don't deter him for more than maybe 5 minutes. I play with him until he can't move anymore every night before bed and still without fail 10 minutes after laying down he is scratching around the closet door or the dresser. He has vertical and horizontal scratching posts.

I just got those claw caps in the mail today and I can't even test to see if they fit because he bites and rabbit kicks me. I'm going to try again later but i dont think I'll be able to get them on.

I've googled this so many times and have tried every recommendation! I know it takes a long time for them to learn but i've been implementing these things all year and i feel like he's desensitized to everything.

I obviously don't want to hurt him. He's such a sweetie most of the time but I am at my wits end with being disturbed all night every night and I can't let him keep destroying carpet.

Is there something i haven't tried? Has anyone who has declawed their cat have any regrets? Did your cat seem negatively effected by it after healing?

Moving homes with my senior cat

Hoping for advice and any tips for moving with kitties!

My cat is 13 years old and has moved quite a few times in his life, but the last time was almost 4 years ago! He usually hides under some furniture for a few days after we move to a new place, but I want to make sure he’s not too stressed this time around since he’s older.

We’re only moving 2 minutes away so my plan was to bring him over to the new house on moving day before the movers start and put him in the bathroom/laundry room with his bed, food and water, toys, and litter box. We would let him out (open the bathroom door) when the move is over. Does that seem like a good plan to ease him into things?

Or should we keep him in the bathroom at our old place and bring him over when the move is done?

Would love and appreciate any advice or thoughts!

My cat does not like my boyfriend, but she used to.

Basically, my boyfriend and I adopted a cat together in March 2020. She was considered an "undersocialized" cat because her previous owners literally left her for dead and she was found severely starving with every sort of parasite. She is 9 years old though, and apparently she has been in someone's care since she was 1.

It took a lot of patience and time, but she eventually warmed up to both of us, to him more than to me though because I just loved her so much and constantly wanted to coddle her. However, one night we had a party. It was really loud so we put her in our bedroom with everything she needed so that she could have a safe space. When I went to bed she was fine, just waiting on the bed for us. Later though my BF came in intoxicated and didn't realize she was sleeping next to me when he plopped down onto the bed. She BOLTED.

Ever since then, she has adored me being overly loving and affectionate to her, begging for me to coddle her, however, now she only tolerates my boyfriend. Any quick movement from him, she BOLTS. If he sneezes, she BOLTS. She let's him pet her if he approaches her slowly, but its very apparent that she is very much only attached to me.

The problem is, its been atleast 6 months since that incident, and it has not changed. Its really heartbreaking for my boyfriend because he just wants to love her, and he was the one who saw how sad she was and wanted to adopt her. I was fixated on a different cat at first, but he really wanted her so we got her. I wonder if I'm just enabling that behavior in her because she knows ill always be there for her, and if I should step away and try to let them bond again. Thoughts?

Anyone want a free cat?

We found this piece of shit a few months ago. Got her bitch-ass spayed, vaccinated, and chipped because we're idiots, and we hate money.

Vet says she's about a year old. She's good with people. An absolute cunt with other animals. Would not recommend if you have other pets, unless you're some sort of god-tier cat whisperer.

It's been 2 months, I've contacted a dozen different no-kill shelters, and only ONE said they would take her; but she failed their temperament test..... I'm about ready to punt this piece of shit into the backyard and call it good.

But before I do, r/Pets, would you like a free cat? Located in Atlanta, Ga.

Not a shitpost. Someone please free me of this rodent.

Spy camera for my cat

I have a neighbor who keeps letting our cat in their house and things turned petty when they decided to call the cops on us when they lied and said we trespassed on their property to get our cat ( not true)!

I’m wanting to place a mini spy cam on his collar or alternatively a GPS tracker with EXACT location tracking so that I can prove my cat is in their house. Can anyone here recommend a great camera that I could review footage in real time though maybe an app on my phone and also could you recommend the best GPS location tracker?

Ideally, (I don’t think this exists) but I would love a collar that has a loud AF beeping noise when I want to track it with a light that flashes, GPS tracking and a camera to capture!

Feeling conflicted after adopting a kitten as an ESA

Hi everyone,

I adopted a beautiful kitten a few months ago. My intention with adopting the pet was to love and care for him but to also have a pet that would be an ESA. I experience anxiety and depression and have always loved animals. My kitten is sweet but hates being held and sometimes prefers to do his own thing. There's times where I'm having a moment and simply want to snuggle with my cat but he hates it unless he comes next to me on his own terms. I know cats teach boundaries but I just wish he was more affectionate.

After reading around, I should've probably adopted an older cat because their personality is already developed but honestly, I assumed most kittens would definitely be more active but also could be just as affectionate.

I originally was looking into adopting a dog but decided against it because I live in an apartment and dogs require more care but even now, I tend to still look at sites with dogs available for adoption and wish I had chose that route. I know there's pros and cons to both especially when it comes to vet expenses. Both have the potential of being expensive but I'm sure dogs are slightly more. I am a dog lover but when it's the right connection (with either), I have no issue with cats as well. A big reason why I had wanted a dog was to get out more. Sometimes with anxiety/depression, It's hard to even think about leaving the house. I've always pictured a dog by my side and thought about how nice it would be to simply take a walk or go to a park and just have that company.

I truly love my kitten and I do like having him around but from the ESA side, I don't feel like the title is appropriate for my particular kitten. It's not required for animals to give "support" but a lot of them do and it's just something I wish I could've experienced. So I'm conflicted because I care about him but realistically at this time, I can only have either a cat or dog and rehoming him because I may prefer another type of animal sounds really bad. I know I would likely miss him so I'm on the fence with even considering it.

Hope I don't sound terrible. I would appreciate any advice from anyone that may have an ESA or just have an opinion on the best option.

I adopted a cat yesterday and I think I made a big mistake. I don't know what to do.

I've been wanting a cat for a few months now and finally adopted one yesterday from the local animal shelter. She is so adorable, cuddly, and kind. I wanted a pet to have as a companion. I chose her because she came up to me and was already so snuggly and stood out from the others.

I've never had a cat before by myself, (had pets growing up), and I just feel this urge of sadness (for the animals I left behind and not choosing the one who was the oldest one (whose been there since mid-October).

Don't get me wrong, I love my new cat so much, I sometimes get this loving, excited, nervous feeling I can't explain.

I guess I'm just sad because of all the others I left behind. I've been bawling my eyes out for the past 15 or so minutes because I didn't get them too.

I mostly feel nervous, for some reason lonely,(with butterflies and a link in my throat) in regards to keeping the cat happy and if I'm doing enough for her. I'm going to try putting on a movie or show on repeat that she enjoys when I'm not here at the house she can watch and not consistently cry. She does not like being along (guessing that is because she was in a cage with other cats).

My landlord and a majority of my housemates love her already due to her kindness, and I'm happy they like her.

I don't know why, I just feel lonely, like I'm the only one out there doing this new pet thing.

TLDR: Got a new cat yesterday, nervous, and feel like I made a mistake.

Neighbors called the cops on us for OUR PET

First time post here but I need some help/advice from the redit community!

I have a senior cat (16 year old) named Mojo! He’s incredibly friendly and has been indoor/outdoor his entire life. Prior to us having him, he was a farm cat. At our previous 12 unit apartment complex, he was known by all neighbors and everyone loved him. We moved about 2 years ago and since have adapted Mojo to yet again be indoor/outdoor. He stays out majority of the day after being fed and comes home around 6 to eat and stay in for the night. He has started to venture to this townhouse property next door, where once again he is well loved and loves the attention. I have been able to make friends with everyone who knows and loves mojo, especially this one woman Michelle(the star of this post) where we would find Mojo every night in the backyard.

I would find him at her door, found out she was feeding him and let her know that due to health concerns, we ask that Mojo not be fed. She said she would stop and we had a pleasant conversation where we exchanged information to text whenever we were out at night looking for Mojo and suspected he might be in the backyard. Everything was great and we were texting regularly and respecting one another whenever we interacted. She would tell me up and down (always making a point to tell me) that she NEVER let Mojo in her house.

My husband and I started noticing that Mojo had a scent on him whenever we would go get him, a scent that was the exact same scent coming from her home whenever she opened her door. We decided to buy a tracker that we placed on his collar so we could find him easier at night. The tracker would beep whenever we were just about 16 feet from him. We would stand at the gate separating the curb from her backyard and push the button but get no response. Once we knocked on her door she would say let me check the backyard, close the door, and then suddenly say “oh here he is” which is when we would magically hear the beeping noise”. As we became more suspicious due to this situation, him not being cold/wet on days where an outdoor cat would have been, but mostly the scent... my husband decided to mention it and this is when things took a turn.

Last night, as her boyfriend was handing mojo back to my husband over the fence, my husband said that it’s too much of a coincidence that you always seem to find Mojo in the backyard once we knock and you go look, yet we don’t hear anything when we buzz his tracker. The guy said he swears they don’t let him in the house, my husband just asked that if they are to please not as this sends mixed messages to the pet on where “ home” is. Guys said they haven’t, my husband thanked him for our cat and we moved on. About 1 hour later we have a knock at our door from our county sheriffs department and I have 3 cops and a sheriff at our door step claiming that this woman has filed a complaint because my husband and I have been trespassing into their backyard to get our cat and also that Mojo is attacking her chickens ( they have no chickens) so they completely lied to the police. They asked what’s been going on and we explained the exact story above. He let us know that moving forward they would be blocking their fence hole that mojo has used to get in the back (won’t help as he still climbs fences and they know this) and asked that we stay away from their apartment.

I am beyond upset as this is ridiculous to have the cops involved (especially because these are bold lies). I have talked with the landlord of the property today and brought him up to speed (he loves mojo and was shocked to hear this) and he let me know that I was allowed to be on the walkway out front I just couldn’t go into their backyard (DUH)! I’m just now worried that Mojo isn’t going to understand and obviously still venture into that yard and at that point, how do I get him back? Do I need to call the police every single night to come and get out cat from them? We are investing in a high quality tracker at this point so we can prove location but does anyone have any suggestions/experience with this to provide some feedback on the laws behind this and what we should do moving forward! Anything will help! Thanks everyone! :)

Adopting a cat has been rough on my mental health

I adopted a 4 year old cat a week ago from a shelter and it’s been really rough on my mental health so far. She has stayed hidden under the bed most of the week and only comes out to eat/use the litter box. She is confined to my bedroom right now as a safe space and will come out of the bed to explore at night or when she thinks I’m asleep in the bed. She will eat treats if I drop them close to her and will smell my hand if I bring it close to her but she will not let me touch her. She will play for a few seconds but go right back to sleep, she is not afraid of me clearly but shows no interest in me either.

She comes from a bad situation, her owner abandoned her in her carrier and then she moved a couple of shelters before ending up in a foster home where she seemed to adjust quickly before coming with me. Everyone says I should just leave her alone and let her adjust to the surroundings herself. The foster parent said I should spend as much time as I can just sitting next to her so she knows I’m safe. I’ve been doing that all week and she seems comfortable enough to go to sleep when I’m sitting next to her but never curious enough to come sniff me or anything. On the contrary, she will turn away from me and go to sleep.

All I’ve been doing is worry - I worry that she’s not comfortable under the bed; her foster parent said she doesn’t like being left alone for too long so I worry that when I’m just ignoring her she resents me more. But I find it difficult to just sit next her on the floor and see her butt go to sleep, it makes me very sad. I worry that I didn’t make the right decision in adopting her and she would be much happier living with someone who knows how to deal with pets. Let me be clear though, I’m not going to return her to the shelter - she is my cat.

I know I just need to give it time but this is my first pet and this wasn’t how I thought it’d be. It would be one thing if she was just afraid of me but this cat seems to have gotten comfortable under the bed, getting her food and water and not wanting to socialize. It also feels like an invasion of space; my room is not my safe space anymore - its her safe space.

I just want to know if anyone’s been through this - this anxiety. I’ve been crying all week and I just want to know how to get past this feeling of intense sadness. I’m willing to give her as much as she wants but I want to know how to compartmentalize her in my brain so I can function normally.

I have an Australian Cattle Dog 3yo female who loves playing with my GFs 1yo Shitzu boy. She plays soft and only bites/nibbles lightly.

With my parents 75lb great peranese mix she is much rougher because she's big. Lately being more aggressive.

She humps her a lot, bites harder and lately has shown teeth. No growling. But if the parents dog wants to play, she will try to with my ACD, but my ACD may show teeth and look terrifying. The ACD will nip make and looks like she's playing but kind of looks scary.

Is this okay? Why does she do that?

I also think she may be protective of my GFs Shitzu because whenever my parents dog makes the Shitzu growl, my ACD will run up and bite the leg of her.

Do cat anxiety beds work?

My vet just confirmed that my cat has strong anxiety. He offered different solutions and then asked where my cat was sleeping. I told him that I had bought a random bed for the cat a few months ago. The vet advised me to look into "anxiety cat beds". Does anyone have experience with them? I researched them on Amazon and the reviews are very good. Does anyone own this bed and can you tell me if it really helps?

I think I can not add any links here but here's the picture of the product I am talking about:

What does it mean when cats do a grazing bite?

So i have this 11 to 12 week old kitten who is a lovable ball of energy and a senior who is around 13 or 14.

So both of them do this thing whenever i rub their belly.

• my senior starts licking my arm but proceeds to graze her teeth in a biting motion. This rinses and repeats itself.

• my kitten did this last night, rubbing her belly. She looks at my knew and does the same thing

They didn't break my skin or anything.

Farting Cat

I have 2 rescue 1 year old kitties. They were found on a reservation as strays. From the very beginning of having them we have dealt with stomach issues mainly for Ruby. Diarrhea, farting, smells etc. we spent tons of money at the vet every week and all test came back neg. all meds barely worked and now we settled with HILL’s GI biome dry food mixed with wet Wellness Pate. It’s not a perfect fix but it’s way better than before. She still has soft stool(not liquid) and FARTS ALL THE TIME!! She even sometimes farts and poops alittle bit....it’s horrible. We lowered her dry food intake but she still farts every day and she lovesss her dry food and will gnaw at the bag if it’s out. She begs you to hold her and you just never know. I feel like her butt is always opening as well... anyone else have experience with loose butt cat??? Farts and all.

Should I give my pet away?

Should I give my cat away?

I love her to death and so thankful for her being in my life. But I’m not sure if I’m able to take care of them anymore. I’m out almost all day, then when I’m at home I have to study and do chores. I really cherish the moments where I pet my cat and she’ll purr a lot and sleep on near my feet while I’m asleep. I’m not sure why the thought of giving her away suddenly came. I’m really scared that if I do give her away I’d be really lonely and don’t have anything to live for. (That is unhealthy I know haha). I was able to leave my abusive relationship because of her too. I wonder if that’s why..

Anyway, if anyone is a super experienced cat owner or has experienced this before please provide some guidance!!

What should I do if the vets in my area have a history of pets dying after being spayed?

My cat recently went into heat for the first time so I took her to a vet to get her spayed. Then I get a call from a family friend who got her cat spayed their telling me that it died a week after. So I took an appointment in another clinic but my cousin said that her cat died right after the operation. These are the only two clinics that spay in my city so I have no clue what to do.

Lost cat meows at door at night but runs away when I open it.

My cat got out last week and I've been worried sick. Turns out she just has been staying under this abandoned house with the other stray cats across the street. Tonight was the first night i've seen her and known it was her, but she's a black cat and only comes to the door at night so its really hard to see her clearly and know where she is when she runs.

So I open my door expecting her to run inside but she runs away and back under the abandoned house. she's never gotten out before but clearly knows this is her house, so why is she running away any time I open the door to get her back inside where its warm and safe.

Any tips on getting her back inside? I'd ask my neighbor for their trapping cage but so many stray cats are around here one of the friendly ones would just get caught in it and im afraid it would spook her from going in if she does try it. This is in a small town so she's really not going to be picked up by animal control and taken anywhere, but im scare of letting her stay outside where she'll get pregnant/diseases/hurt/too cold.

Skittish kitten

Hey Redditers! We have a six month old kitten that was obtained through a rescue. Her foster mom kept her in a bathroom for three months. We've had her in our bedroom for two weeks now. She's really lovey with us: sleeping in our bed with us, playing with her toys, and curling up to our 13 y/o son. She prefers the closet and under our blankets on the bed. We tried to keep the room door open to entice her to explore the hallway, but she isn't having it. We talked about picking her up and bringing her out, but she's so fearful. Suggestions? Thanks!

will fostering a cat make my cat upset when the foster leaves?

i mean, i'm sure it will to a degree, but i mainly want to know just what this situation i'm thinking of taking on would do to my future furball. basically, in a few months, after i move and get situated, i plan to adopt a cat. at around the same time, my best friend is moving back in with her folks (pandemic gonna pandemic) and can't keep her cat there. she's asked me to take care of it while she looks for a new job and eventually a new place, but odds are that'll be a good few months if not longer. i'm worried the two will get really attached to each other, especially with mine never knowing my place without the foster around. thoughts?

Ferret died and

My ferret passed away in October and I buried him at my significant others house. It’s November and I decided to put his tomb stone on his grave today. I came to see his grave dug out and casket busted open with him not in it. I think an animal ate him. Because beside his busted casket were pieces of fur. I tried telling myself it’s the circle of life but I’m so shocked because never in a million years would I imagine him being eaten. I remember kissing his head and rubbing his body to sleep. I’m not mad because the fox is only trying to survive. I just feel like his remains was the only thing I had left of him and now it’s gone. Anyone had a similar story?

A cat followed me around and is now sitting on my doorstep crying

I live in a condo area that has quite a few stray cats(usually the same ones) that are around and fed by people. I recently been seeing this new cat. I was walking my dog to my car and turned around the cat was following me and my dog to the car. My dog grew up around cats but she doesn’t have a prey drive and is chill so she was just interested and smelling it.

The cat is now sitting at my door meowing and wants to come inside. I don’t know what to do, it’s late and I don’t have a cat carrier, but it somehow found my door and is sitting there crying. I feel so bad. Also earlier one of the usual stray cats(I call him Samson) was picking a fight with it, and it didn’t attack till provoked but I clicked at Samson and he left it alone. (He’s very friendly with people and seems like the head honcho cat around here).

I definitely wouldn’t mind having a cat but first and foremost I will protect my dog because she’s my baby.

Another thing to add, when I opened my door to peek at the cat my dog came to the door to sniff and look and the cat didn’t hiss at my pup.

Any advice helps thanks!

4 dog family in a 3 pet community

My parents recently bought a new house in the same community I was raised in. Today they got a welcome letter from the city giving the numbers of all the city services etc, it also said that there is 3 pet limit. Like I said, I grew in this town and never knew this existed and now I’m freaking out. Sorry if this sounds like nonsense but I really need to know what to do about this.

I can't stop being overprotective

Hey y'all, ive recently got a stray kitten who im training to be indoors. He has a litter inside, toys and a pretty big house to play in, I have two dogs who don't mind him. Yet, something bothers me, i'm overly protective of him, i have generalized anxiety disorder, lots of school work (i am a college student) and sometimes i just feel overwhelmed. Giving him away is not a choice, i'd feel like a horrible person, any advice in how to stop being overprotective ?

New kitten - food dilemma

Hi all! New cat mom here, looking for some feeding advice.

We brought home our kitten two weeks ago (then 12 weeks old, now 14), and she's been an absolute joy so far - settling really well, with the exception of eating. The shelter had her on a 2x a day wet food + dry food available all day schedule, so we attempted the same with the same food she had there. But while she eats her dry food just fine over the course of 24h or so, and drinks lots of water, wet food has been tricky. She initially would only eat about a tablespoon or so at a time, so we switched to wet food 3x a day to get her to eat more that way. Since then she has gradually become less and less interested in her wet food, and she now mostly refuses to eat the original wet food at all, in any flavour that might be presented to her. We've also tried upping the amount of dry food available to her, but she doesn't seem to have increased the amount she eats accordingly. She's only eating around 1/4-1/3 cup of dry food a day, plus maybe a tablespoon or so of wet maximum. Doesn't seem to make a difference to her whether its "fresh" out of the can, or warmed a little in the microwave/with warm water. I also contacted the shelter, who told me they had no abnormal feeding notes for her at all.

After speaking to her vet (her first appointment is next Wednesday, COVID has slowed the process there unfortunately), they've suggested trying a different food - but how do I switch her to something new gradually if she won't eat the original food anymore? I've picked up some new cans, and she wont touch the food at all if I mix them together, but has shown some interest in the new food by itself. Do I just switch her over all-in and hope for the best?

My kitten is playing too rough with my other cat

This might seen weird but yes, My KITTEN is playing too rough with my cat. So my cat is one year old and she's a mix of Norwegian Forest cat and ragdoll (and some other stuff) so she's pretty small for one year. Now the kitten is almost seven months old now and he's a pure ragdoll. What he does is he like jumps on top off her and holds her so she can't rum away. She screams like she's being murderd and gets out of His grip and pushes him away and he just stands there while she's pushing. I don't know what to about this. HELP!
