I heard it’s unhealthy to use lasers with dogs, would it be possible to help them by using some sort of red dot candy in conjunction with the laser and have the dog “catch” it?

I don’t own any dogs, but this thought just occurred to me.

Help! How to save my dying zebra finch?

Hi everyone, I'm panicking because my female zebra finch is on her death bed. She has ripped the feathers out around her leg, while has a lump that's bloody and bleeding. I gave her antibiotics and pain meds and thought she would be okay because she seemed fine after. 2 weeks later and now as I write this I found her at the bottom of the cage with her mate covered in blood (mates white) and my heart shattered to a million pieces. I'm keeping her warm in a blanket. How can I save her? I love her dearly and am desperately trying to come up with a way to save her life. Please help. She's doing a tiny bit better now that's she's warmed up but I don't think that will last long.

My 16 year old cat is terrified of my new kitten. What could I do?

She refuses to go downstairs, where my new cat is and where her food and litter box are. The new cat isn’t mean to her at all, my old cat is just terrified. My old cat has been an only cat all her life. She doesn’t like him at all. We don’t want to send the new cat back because he didn’t do anything wrong and he’s nice. My old cat isn’t attacking him. She attacked a family member for trying to bring her downstairs and they had to go to the hospital and we had call 911. She’s never been so scared and upset. Should we bring the new cat back? We’ve only had him for 2 days. Should I move all of the old cat’s stuff upstairs? How should I introduce them?

Can a bedroom work for a Cat's "Safe Room"

I just got a new kitten. She's very shy and immediately ran under my bed. I had heard that you should set aside a room for new cats since the whole ordeal can be very overwhelming. So far, I've moved her food and litter box into my bedroom. I'm just not sure if a bedroom would be a good choice for a safe room, but it's probably the quietest room in my apartment. The bathroom has thin walls where you can hear people passing by and the living room/kitchen is far too big and would completely overwhelm her. I don't want to scare her though with my presence as I'll obviously be sleeping here and what not for extended periods of time, and I know her having things to hide under can really hurt the 'bonding time'. I would just hate to move her right now, but if it would be better in the long run to set up a safe room elsewhere, I would. Any thoughts?

Cat Situation

My lady and I have four cats. Three females and one male; all Maine Coons and all neutered/spayed. Teo of our female cats are super chill and are totally fine. The third female is very skittish. The Male is very hyper and seems to have this fixation with my skittish cat. We've tried CBD Oil, which, is working for our third female and she is relaxing a lot more. The Male seems to still be fixated and somewhat aggressive (likes to try and chase her) with our skittish cat. He has good days but sometimes it seems like the CBD does not work. Any body have any suggestions before I have to get rid of the Male so my skittish cat can actually relax? The other two females are fine with her; it is just the Male. Help is appreciated. Thanks.

Cat diagnosed with lymphoma

The worst day of my life. My cat was diagnosed with lymphoma. The Dr is not sure yet if it is small cell or large cell, It's in his GI tract. The only way to know is by doing a biopsy, and I don't have the money for that. The Dr said they're both treated the same way, so we're starting with steroids and what not to see how he does for a few weeks. Has anyone been through this? There is so much to this.... The emotional aspect and the task of administrating all of these medications. Just one week ago him and I were living our lives normally, and now I'm sticking chemotherapy pills down his throat. How do I do this.....? Can you all send some good vibes for Tonka and I that he only has small cell and can live a little longer. He is my best friend and I can't imagine my life without him, I am truly devastated. This is going to be the hardest thing I've ever had to do....... He is only 9.

Help! Lump on cats jaw

I've had my cat for 6years now, she is 7yo. She was an indoor/outdoor cat for her first few years with me, but the last few years she's only been an indoor cat.

In the last 24hours, she has grown a lump on her jaw maybe the size of a dime or small marble. I can't get her into a vet until Monday, but I'm a bit worried.

She isn't that old, her diet hasn't changed, what could this be?

My cat and I separated from my husband...and his cat. How can I help my cat adjust?

My husband and I separated a couple weeks ago. He's keeping the house and his cat who he had before we met. I got an apartment, and am keeping my cat, who we got together when she was a kitten. I feel really selfish taking her from her house and from her other cat, but she's super bonded with me, and she never really warmed up to my ex. She and my ex's cat played together, but I felt like she was more bonded with me, and I think she would have chosen to move in with me, but I couldn't really ask her.

My cat has always been around other cats. This is her first time on her own. I want to eventually get another cat, but I'm hoping to move closer to my family once my divorce is finalized, and I'm hesitant to try to move two cats across the country. I also didn't want to introduce another cat while everything was still so unsettled.

So far my cat seems to be adjusting to her new home (she was scared at first, but she seems more comfortable). My apartment is also 1/3 the size of her old house, which is perfect for me, but I worry if she has enough space to run around.

I guess what I'm wondering is does anyone have any suggestions on how to help keep her occupied while she adjusts to being an only cat after having a friend cat? I've gotten her new toys, we've been playing feather toy multiple times a day. I'm cuddling her as much as I can. I've been giving her cat nip a couple times a week. I giver her lots of treats and belly rubs.

I can't imagine how hard this is for her. I at least understand what's going on, and know it's for the best.

Can large dogs hold their bladder for a longer amount of time than small dogs?

My parents have 3 dogs- a great pyrenees, a border collie mix, and a boston terrier. On days that my parents both work, the big dogs can easily wait several hours to go outside until someone comes home, but the boston terrier has an “accident” every time. Is this common with small dogs or is it just an individual thing?

Feline vestibular disease

Our family cat got recently diagnosed with vestibular disease. It basically means that her vestibular nerve is damaged and she feels very dizzy, out of balance and disoriented. She can't really focus her eyes anywhere because of it and gets bit Lost around the house. She also falls over easily and walks on circles, tilts her head to right and is very frustrated. Has anhone experienced this with their cat? Did they recover well? Did it get worse? And what age was your cat? Our cat is 15 years old so i'm very worried. I hope that someone has experience about this in older cats and it ended well. I really hope she can overcome this.

My cat has fleas and we have quarantined him in the bathroom for the last couple days while we cleaned and treated our apartment. My SO wants to keep him in there for another week but that seems nuts to me. Is this reasonable?

Hi there, I have a beautiful 2yo orange tabby boy that I love more than anything. We live in a large apartment complex with my SO. He is an indoor cat and an only child. First of all I admit this is totally my fault because I lapsed for several months on giving him his Revolution because it is expensive and I figured it would be fine since he never goes outside. I am NEVER making that mistake again. On Sunday we found fleas on him and gave him a traditional pesticide flea bath, washing maybe 10-20 fleas off him, and applied Frontline. Since Monday every day I’ve given him a waterless foam flea bath with plant-based ingredients and combed his coat out, finding less fleas every time and none today. We have cleaned and vacuumed the whole house and applied diatomaceous earth, pesticide spray, and plant-based spray where appropriate. I’ve washed almost everything in the house but I still have a lot of backlogged laundry to go through.

Since Tuesday we have been keeping him quarantined in the bathroom after watching him scratch flea eggs into the bed (ew). We hadn’t finished cleaning the rest of the house at that point and we didn’t want him to pick up or drop off any more fleas into the house before we finished cleaning. This has made him miserable. He is a very active and social cat that always wants to be with his people and, like most cats, hates closed doors on principle. He’s been crying a lot and while I try to visit him as much as I can, I’ve been very busy trying to clean everything and I miss curling up in the bed with my baby.

This is my first cat but my SO grew up with several and has dealt with fleas before so I’ve been deferring to his expertise. Since the cleaning is mostly done and I found zero fleas on the kitty today, I asked him if he thought it was okay to let him back out into the rest of the house. He said we should keep him in there for another WEEK until we were sure the problem was dealt with. Now, I’ve never dealt with fleas before, but the infestation doesn’t seem too terrible. I have only seen one flea that wasn’t on my cat. My SO has three or four bites on his ankles from wearing thick socks around the house but I haven’t gotten any. I think it’s cruel to keep a playful, energetic cat, who loves running around the apartment and spending lots of time with his people, shut in a bathroom for over a week. I want this problem gone as soon as possible, but I don’t want to make my little buddy miserable.

What is the best thing to do in this scenario? Is it really that risky to let him out at this point?

I had to rehome my first dog. I'm still devastated.

I got my own dog back in 2015. My boyfriend at the time and I were getting our first place together, and we felt it was right for us. We quickly found and connected with our girl, Addie. She was an 8-week-old mini Australian Shepherd. Shortly after we got her, we got engaged. Then we got married. Then he was deployed. Then we moved. And we moved again. And we moved again. And again, but this time to a big house with a large backyard. That's when we got a German Shepherd, Revali.

Then we separated. My husband cheated for the third time. I was done.

During the early months of our separation, I was basically homeless. My husband wasn't taking care of the dogs, so I took them with me everywhere. They were my babies. Especially Addie. She and I had been through so much together.

I rented the first apartment I could find. It was a tiny studio apartment. Addie was miserable because she could never get away from Revali, who was constantly pestering her to play. It got to the point where she'd vomit from nerves and she would not let him anywhere near me. When we were living at the house, she had plenty of room to get away from him to have her alone time.

I knew I had to rehome one of them. It hurt my heart beyond belief, but I couldn't give them both the lives they needed. I decided to rehome Addie because I knew she would be easier to take care of. She was low-maintenance. Revali was still just a puppy with high energy. I couldn't trust anyone to give him the attention he needed because it was a lot.

Fast forward to now. It's been a long time since the split, but I still think about Addie every single day. I can't talk about her without crying. I don't have the connection with Revali that I had with her. I love him to bits, but it's not the same. I unexpectedly was able to get out of my lease and move into a house with a fenced yard. I would take her back in a heartbeat. But I know that's not how it works.

She's living with my dad's neighbor who is dying of cancer. She has brought so much light into his life, so I've made peace with that. But part of me selfishly wishes I would have just toughed it out a few more months until I was in my current living situation.

Part of me feels irresponsible for getting two dogs. But I didn't know it would end up like this. I just miss her. I want to know I made the right choice.

TL;DR: Had to rehome one of my dogs after my husband and I split up. She and I were super close, and I miss her every. freaking. minute.

What is your experience with animal shelters?

I'm interested in adopting an older cat, but I'm nervous about it because I hear a lot of stories about people falling in love with the pet they apply for and then the shelter rejects them with the most frivolous of excuses.

I'm 20 years old but I planning to adopt when I turn 21 because the shelters where I live mostly require applicants to be that age. I tried a few local shelters just to make sure I absolutely wanted a cat and I really do enjoy how calming and cuddly they can be.

I feel like they might discriminate me because of my age and the fact that I still live at home with my mother.

What are your experiences with adopting, especially with cats? Can you lend some advice?

Advice needed for one cat trying to steal food and treats from the other

Hello,

I adopted two cats a few weeks ago. At their foster home, I believe they ate together from a large gravity auto feeder. I have been trying to feed them from their own separate bowls, but they both insist on trying to eat from the same one, usually at the same time.

The problem is, one cat tries to always be the first cat to the food and gobble up as much as she can before the other cat gets a chance. She will do this at both bowls. I am torn because I worry that if I leave a lot more food out, she will overeat, but if I don’t the other cat won’t get enough food.

Even when I try to give them treats, she will swallow hers super fast and then run and try to take the one I have given the other cat. I physically have to hold her back so my poor other kitty can have her treat.

Other than this issue, they don’t fight. They They play together and often sleep together.

I appreciate any advice on how to help with feeding times!

Puppy or adult dog?

My bf and I are looking to adopt a dog sometime this year.

I would love to adopt an adult dog, but I am worried about that with our three cats. We want a medium sized breed, and dogs can be unpredictable in stressful situations like a new home. I don't want any of my cats to accidentally get hurt.

Would it be better for our situation to get a puppy so it grows up used to cats? I feel a little guilty because puppies usually get adopted while older dogs can stay in limbo for longer, so I wanted to hear some outside opinions.

Doggie pain relief until vet visit?

My dog has a veterinary appointment for early next week, but I was wondering if there was anything I could do to help her pain until then, and where I can get it. Her lower back/hips seem to hurt her when she's getting up from laying down, and sometimes she limps when walking around. She's only a year old, but we were hit by a semi, so I wouldn't be surprised if that is the root of the issue. Anyone know a good place to get something to help her? Maybe even a doggie chiropractor or something? I hate seeing her like this. She's a standard poodle, and normally a very active dog, but she's slowed down because of the pain. Thanks!

Struggling with male kitten's sexual aggression towards female adult cat

Hi everyone!

My partner and I adopted a male kitten at 7 weeks back in May. He's almost 10 months old now, neutered, and seemingly has sexual aggression towards my adult (5 years) female cat.

Anytime my poor female cat even moves, he goes up behind her, mounts her, and bites her neck. She understandably screams, hisses, and tries her best to get away. Sometimes the male will chase her to try again, sometimes he will give up that round.

After some research and ruling out that it's sexual aggression, I purchased the Hog Mate boar spray that has been mentioned and recommended many times in articles. The first time I sprayed in on the female's rear, the male definitely seemed confused and backed off the entire evening. Day 2, he was back at it and has been ever since despite spraying the female's rear almost every day. It doesn't seem to affect him in the slightest.

What are my next steps? Is there anything else I can try? Hoping to solve this on my own before bringing in the vet.

Thank you in advance!

Need advice on separating two bonded cats

Hey guys I'd really appreciate any input as I am a little biased.

So I moved into a new place almost a year ago and at the same time the landlord (who lived in the same house at the time) adopted two sister kittens. She was always out and about and it fell to me to take care of them, change their litter, feed them etc. I don't mind this at all as part of our arrangement is that I take care of things around the house in exchange for a lower rent. The landlord ended up adopting a dog that the cats do not get along with and then moved out. I was asked to bring the cats into my place because of the dog and construction going on in the house. I was happy to do so since I've been basically raising them for over a year.

I took them to get spayed (she had no idea they weren't spayed and had no time bring them ). I've also bought a new litter box, take care of them etc. However, I know that she wants to get rid of them eventually and has talked about it. I've grown very attached to them, and them to me. They essentially feel mine in every sense but officially. They are still under her name and she pays for their food while I take care of them and pay for their toys and litter.

The problem is, I would love to officially adopt both of them. However, I know I can't properly financially take care of both of them, with vet bills and everything. It also would be harder for me to find a new apartment in my city if i were to move out with two cats rather than with one. They're both around 10 months old. They play together, cuddle, groom each other. They seem pretty bonded. Would it really impact them to be separated at this age? Should I rehome both of them together?

Thank you!

Help me sleep!!

Hello, I have a 8 month old cat. We give him 3 square meals everyday breakfast lunch and dinner. Typically, it was at about 8:30 in the morning, 2 p.m. and then about 9 at night. He is a Highlander lynx so he's supposed to become very large and we gave him about 7 or 7 and 1/2 oz wet food everyday throughout these three meals. Was try to to avoid getting a dry food because the vet told us not to. My problem is this: a couple of weeks ago I had a really late night and I overslept so around 9:45 in the morning he started scratching at my door because he was hungry for breakfast. Fair. Then the next day he started scratching on my door when he wanted breakfast which was at 9.is incrementally started scratching at my door earlier and earlier until now I cannot sleep past 5:50 in the morning. How do I get him to stop scratching at my door and wait for breakfast? He scratches as though he's never eaten in his life and he acts absolutely insatiable at every meal, but especially breakfast when I'm trying to sleep. Am I not feeding him enough? I already give him all the food I can afford and I water it down a little bit per my vet's recommendations to fill his tummy more. Nothing helps and he scratches and scratches and meows.

I need some insight about a pair of adopted under-socialized cats. I think we let them have access to the entire house too soon

So we adopted two 8 month old cats three weeks ago. They are sisters from the same litter. They were rescued at 3 - 4 months from a hoarder/cat breeder and spent that time mostly locked up in a tiny apartment with 20 other cats. They have been in foster care since with a lady who has been working on socializing them.

Following recommendations from their foster mom, we brought them home and their first few nights were spent in the bathroom. Then we opened them to an attached bedroom, put boxes and beds in there for them to hide. We were told that once they seem comfortable and were showing interest in leaving the room that it would be okay to open more areas of the house. The only thing is that their bedroom is the only room that has a door. It's an old house and the doors dont fit, so we removed them and replaced with curtains , before we got the cats.

The cats were somewhat friendly, one of them purrs and rolls over when pet. They have been making noise exploring and eating at night. But they have gotten increasingly shy and skittish and refuse to be near us. We are planning on getting cat shelves and towers for them this weekend so they can have a place to feel confident. But I cant stop thinking about maybe we let them out too early. What I've read online says to get the cats comfortable with us before giving more access. I fear they will just hide forever as is but am not sure what to do to make it better for them. My instinct is telling me to put them back in the room but I also feel like that is cruel at this point. Especially the trauma of us physically getting them there.

Does anyone have any experience with cats like these? Or have any suggestions?

Should I adopt this amazing dog?

Hey Reddit! Second post here so if the format of terrible blame mobile. So I'm in a bit of a spot. I've wanted a dog for years and I've finally got my own place with my boyfriend and I can get one. The problem is, my landlord is seriously the shittiest person I've ever came across and he's done nothing but made it difficult for me to enjoy living here. He's not fixed half of the stuff I've asked him to and he's just got a terrible attitude. Plus, he never comes around here. Now, his criteria states that I must pay a $300 pet fee to have a pet here, which I don't really think he deserves it just because of how bad he's treated us. But this dog is from a shelter, she's a very medium sized Shepherd mix, and I can afford her, I'm just scared about my landlord. On top of this, I do have a ferret, but she's animal aggressive, and I keep her in my bedroom. This dog has had a rough life, she's been surrendered twice, and I would love to give her a loving home but I'm just so scared of everything. Should I adopt her? I'll try and add a picture but I'm not sure how to do that just yet.

Fur

Why do people freak out when someone has dog or cat hair on their clothes and say it's disgusting? What is the association with fur being disgusting and why is it mainly older people (ages 50+) that find dog hair so disgusting?

I am thinking about euthanizing my old, sick cat.

A little backstory : My cat is about 16 years old and since the end of last year he has been having trouble with diarrhea and as a result he has lost a lot of weight over the course of only a few months.

Also I'm not a Native Speaker so excuse my bad English. I'm also not sure if this is the right subreddit since I'm new to reddit.

Since last Sunday the condition of my cat has gotten way worse. Until today he basically ate nothing and if he manages to take a few bites it comes out almost immediately.

This Monday we went to the vet with him and he gave my cat some injections. Apparently his circulation (?) was really bad.

On Tuesday we went to the vet with him again and he basically told us that we would need to get my cat euthanized. He even offered to do it immediately. We of course declined because we wanted to at least have some bloodwork done before we make this decision. Again he got a lot of injections. That evening we for sure thought that my cat was going to die. He wasn't making any sounds and just layed there basically waiting to die while having horrible diarrhea. That was the point where I thought euthanization would be the best way to not let him suffer anymore.

Then the next day he was suddenly behaving really normal. He was going out, rolling around in the sun and being extremely vocal again, like his usual self. Even his diarrhea stopped later in the evening and he ate something even if it wasn't much. We went to the doctor again and he said that his blood (considering the situation ) was in a better state than he tought it would be. Apparently my cat has some sort of infection. He gave my cat some injections and told us to take him home again. We hoped that his condition would stay the same or at least would get better.

Well, today everything has worsened . He has extreme diarrhea again and doesnt eat anything. He is basically slowly starving and I dont want him to suffer anymore.
The thing that holds me back from euthanizing him ( because I honestly don't think that he will get better as he is aleready pretty old and there isn't much time left because he isn't eating anything) is his behaviour. Like yesterday he is enjoying himself. Bathing in the sun, wanting to get cuddly, sleeping in a relaxed manner etc. I honestly don't know what to do. Logically he should be euthanized and that is what I think would be best for him and my family, but I feel like I don't have the right to bascially kill him as he is still seemingly enjoying his life. It just feels morally wrong to take everything away from him like that when he is behaving that way.

In the evening I have another appointment with the vet.

Do you think euthanizing my cat would be cruel considering his condition ?

(Vent/ Rant) I REGRET ADOPTING THIS PUPPY

I adopted him because he was severely neglected. He has extensive mange and can barely open it’s eyes. Every time I hold him I develop an itch. The first night I was itching all over and it drove me crazy and now it’s the third day and I have been itching non stop. My kid also broke out in rashes when she petted him for a brief moment. And I had to give her Benadryl. He constantly cries and I am realizing it’s not because of hunger or potty breaks it seems like his skin is making him miserable. After taking him to the humane society and getting medicine for him I get a call saying I don’t have work until the middle of April so as of now I have no income and I feel very regretful. I posted him on Facebook to see if anyone would like to nurse him back to health but I got criticized and said it’s mange it’s no big deal. I was charging a rehoming fee at first very low for a full breed chihuahua with shots and medication ($60)I only wanted a rehoming fee so I know whoever is keeping him is going to be responsible and I had a bunch of angry dog ladies saying I was trying to make a profit out of him but I just listed him free out of desperation. I’ve had 5 people flake on me after I say he has mange but they give me tips of how to treat it. I heard it can be a process and expensive so I really feel instant regret I’m planning on calling a rescue seeing if they could love him because I feel like I might not be able to provide him the care he needs as I am a single parent with no income in the moment living on my own with my kid and the puppy would make things hard on me. My mom and sister are giving me shit for quitting on him so fast but I prefer my daughter healths over a puppy she’s been crying complaining how her skin feels like pins and needles and itchy to the point where she’s breaking her skin. I have thought of keeping him outside but I’ll feel bad for it even if he was outside when I did got him. Help am I bad for wanting to quit on him?:(

Dog nicked my daughters finger while feeding him, but his rabies vaccine expired. Will we have to quarantine him for 10 days?

I live in California and have a small dog. My 2 year old niece was trying to get my dog to stand and grab food from her hand and the dog scratched her finger with his teeth. We put antiseptic immediately and my sister wondered about his rabies vaccine. We found out it expired over a year ago. He's an indoor dog mostly and he's decently healthy with zero signs of rabies. He was at the Vet just a month ago and was okay. We still decided to take my niece to the hospital to get a rabies vaccine just in case. You think we still have to do the quarantine for 10 days?

My friend is giving me a Maine Coon he was originally gonna give to the shelter, to me on Saturday, any advice?

I already own two dogs, both golden retriever and Australian Shepherd mixes, although none of them have ever exhibited aggression, so I believe I am fine with them interacting with my cat. Any advice for this cat? He is one yr and my friend said he never hisses or scratches people. Also i have 3 children in my house, all ranging from 2-4 years.

First time rescue adopting, now I have to make a hard choice

I have had several dogs in my lifetime, but we’d always gotten them as puppies from Craigslist or other similar sites. This time around I’m going through a rescue and I’ve never had to consider so many details before and I’m getting a bit overwhelmed. We currently have a young kid, two house rabbits, and a cat, so I’m torn on which is the better option. Would you adopt a slightly older dog (2-3) that is already house, crate, etc trained but unknown past so unknown triggers or is it better to get a 6 mo puppy that only a has a few basics down but is a “clean slate”?

Dog breathing rapidly after spay

On Saturday afternoon, my 12 year old Chihuahua went in for an emergency Spay due to pyometra. The day after recovery she was vomiting, didn’t want anything to eat, and wouldn’t get up from bed, so we took her to vet Monday morning. Turns out she was dehydrated from all the vomiting and had gastritis due to antibiotics that were prescribed. She got IV’s for two days and the vet said she was good to go. He sent us some supplements to help get her appetite going. She’s been doing great, she’s been walking, sitting and doing things she didn’t do the days before she got the IV.

I have noticed that after the surgery she’s been breathing very rapidly. She’s not struggling to breathe but has just been breathing faster than usual. I’m curious as to what it could be. Could it be that she’s lost weight or could it be pain? Have any of you guys experienced any of this or have an idea of what it could be?

Female cat having difficulty passing urine?

Just tonight my 9 year old female cat has seemed to be having difficulty passing urine. Just put my Jack Russell to sleep

I was the proud owner of a hyper, loving, pizza loving Jack Russell for 15 years. Yesterday, he fell and broke a disc in his spine. There wasn’t much we could do, so half an hour ago I went ahead and gave him peace. I feel really shitty and I miss him a lot already, but I know the alternative was gonna be too hard for him and myself. He couldn’t walk anymore. Last night he tried to drag himself to the kitchen and it broke my heart. The vet said there wasn’t gonna be a recovery and he was too old for surgery. As a rescue, i gave him the best life he could have had. I just need a place to post my thoughts. Thank you if you took the time to read this.

Pet sitting for the first time and I need some advice.

We have two Aussies, one five years old who loves every dog she meets and one eight years old who is hit and miss with other dogs but is not aggressive, just not friendly. I have been asked to dog sit for an eight year old mini doodle who loves cats but has never been around other dogs. I want this to go as smoothly as possible because I’d also like to start dog sitting for another friend who has a German Shepherd mix. Is there anything I should do to make our Aussies comfortable while also easing the Doodle’s anxiety of being away from home? Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

What would you do? Stray cat advice needed.

My husband and I periodically get visits from a skittish but sweet calico we call Turkey at our apartment. We have never been sure that she is actually homeless but we always give her a snack and some scratches. She even follows us inside sometimes but wants to leave again after a few minutes. Occasionally she brings a friend we call Ham but he won't let us pet him.

Well, this winter has been HARSH. We've been worried about them, especially when we see their footprints in the snow on our deck and know we weren't around to see them. One night, it got around -15 degrees F and I was so worried, I went out and looked for them just in case.

We didn't see them for a few weeks and I was sure they were dead. Then yesterday, Turkey returned! She hung out for a bit and left. Tonight she's back but she will not leave. Usually she wants to by now. It is bitterly cold outside so I'm inclined to let her stay until morning.

The reasons we haven't adopted her are 1) We think she must have a home because I swear that cold would have killed her and 2) my husband is very allergic. He loves cats but he can't live with one.

What should I do? I don't have any cat supplies. If I kick her out and she DOES have a home, she could probably just meow until they let her in. But if she doesn't, it's not right that she should be so miserably cold!

I really don't know much about cats so I would take any insight for this situation.

Cat peeing everywhere

Long story short. I have 3 cats. 2 of them (indie and finn) are sisters/best friends and they don't have claws. The other one (Lucy) has claws and is cozy with indie but attacks finn. She plays with indie (and indie kicks her ass) and we think she might be trying to play with finn but we aren't too sure. A few months ago it escalated to Finn peeing everywhere (we think it's to mark her territory) but it ends up making Lucy more hostile. We didn't have issues with the 3 of them before my sister moved in with her two crazy cats (both had claws and were very playful) but shortly after she left Lucy got more hostile (or playful we don't know). Finn just doesn't fight back and we don't know what to do. We currently lock her in a cage during the day when we are gone so she can have a safe place to lay down but we hate to see her caged up all the time. We really don't want to get rid of any of them because they are all sweet cats. We just need Finn to stop peeing everywhere. Any pet experts out there?

I don't feel my roommate takes proper care of her dog during the week, feel the need to pick up the slack.

My roommate and I are both in graduate school. My schedule is a little more flexible than hers so I am at home more often. She is usually gone 50 - 60 hours a week.

Her dog gets left home alone usually 10 - 12 hours a day, 5 days a week. Since I'm usually home before her, she will ask me to let her dog out to pee pretty much every day. I feel bad because the rest of the day the dog is pretty much locked in her room, so I usually take her on a walk and play with her too.

I find the whole thing really annoying because we only live a 15 min bus ride off campus and her schedule is flexible enough where she could come back and at least let her dog out. We live in an apartment complex so letting her dog out means I have to put on her harness and take her outside + walking takes up time. It also is really annoying for me because she is a dog sitter on Rover and she spends half an hour 5x a week doing the same thing I do with someone else's dog (and gets paid for it) but doesn't come back to take care of hers. Also the other day she texted me at 4pm asking me to take her dog out because she wasn't coming back until 6. I responded at 430 that I would but I forgot and when she came back, she was really upset with me and said she would never let her dog go without peeing that long (even though she does that all the time). During the weekend she plays a lot with the dog and takes good care of her; it's just during the week that I feel she neglects her dog.

I find the whole thing really frustrating. I've been scared to bring it up because she's otherwise a good roommate and a nice girl and I don't want to cause any problems. What do you all think?

We're under quarantine after we lost a cat to fip. I don't understand why.

Let me start by saying, I live in a third world s**thole. True, we have few good vets and extraordinary surgeons, but most of them lack experience with certain diseases and viruses because most people simply don't take their pets to the vet. You know, dogs are guards and cats are mouse killers and if they die before they turn 1, it was their time to go. Don't get me started... Anyway, corona and fip are not even mentioned in our veterinary trade school and uni curriculum, the younger generations know about them from the internet, the older generations don't even speak english and know a bit from their limited experience. Basically, nobody knows anything.

We had 2 cats, male and female, we lost the male almost a month ago. He was constantly sick, it was this after that. In 6 months, he had been to the vet more times than I had been to the doctor in 30 years. In retrospect, he probably had the dry form when we got him but back then we didn't have a diagnosis and only treated the symptoms as they came. Long story, for 3 months we lived in a studio apartment before we could move to our new place and we couldn't separate them when he would get sick, but the female didn't get anything from him, not even the bacterial infections. We lost him almost a months ago and our vet put us under 45 days quarantine. I have several questions I can't find the answers to by googling and would appreciate your experiences. Another thing to note, we don't have tests for corona, I ordered some from abroad and still wait for their arrival.

  1. Why are we under quarantine? The mutation itself isn't viral and most cats have corona anyway. Our other cat probably has corona, so any new cat would be exposed to it.
  2. If he already had fip when we got him, could he have given corona to our other cat? It would be miracle if she didn't have it already cause we constantly fostered strays before we got him.
  3. Are we in quarantine because of the minuscule chance our other cat doesn't have corona? It's the only thing that makes sense, to eliminate the possibility of another cat getting corona from the hairs left around the house.
  4. Should I be worried about her yearly shot? She's due and I'm terrified of doing it cause vaccination can trigger the mutation.
  5. Can cats give corona to dogs? We couldn't wait to move to own place to be able to foster dogs and now I'm terrified of that too.

I'm not asking cause I want to replace my baby. He was one of a kind, I called him my wart. He had his paws around my neck 100% of the time I wasn't standing up. Nothing can replace that. Part of it is curiosity, part pure rage. Simply put, in my country very few people care about the strays. Not being able to foster while seeing yet another poisoning spree makes me feel debilitated.

We just got a note from our apartment neighbor that our dogs bark all day. Help!

We have 2 dogs, a great dane and a doxy. The doxy is a bigger issue than the dane. The whole apartment is brick so low frequency noise travels well, like doors slamming closed or people by the windows will trigger them to bark or go look see.

What can we do to train them out of that behavior? Can't afford classes or daycare right now.

We're a corner apartment so it's just 1 neighbor and possibly a very rare downstairs neighbor which was mentioned in the note. Should we just crate them or keep them in 1 room far from the shared wall? With all the other rotten lucked we've had right now, eviction isn't high on our list of fun times.

Please help.

Puppy leash training

My pomchi puppy who is about 10 weeks old now is being impossible to walk outside with. I understand that everything and every person is very interesting and new for her but I cant get her attention with treats, and everytime she wants to go to the area outside where it is most dirt and rocks( meaning she will get a lot of shit) So i try to discipline her, lure her with treats to come to me or just pull, but since she is so small I feel like im hurting her if i pull to many times bcuz she wants to sniff everything and obvi I have to say no and pull the leash so she does not go and eat rabbit shit..

Any advice on how to make her pay attention/listen to me outside?! I have tried with different treats and yes sometimes it works, but most of the time she is just being so up in her own world that everything beside me gets her attention.

Pet restrictions by municipalities

Hello all,

I am currently moving to a borough that as a pet restriction of two dogs and two cats. This is stated on the Certificate of occupancy checklist and not the actual CO. So this is news to me. And in NJ and I’m sure other in states, we need to register our pets and have updated rabies and so on and so forth.

My question is this; if my town restricts pets to two dogs and two cats, would they have a problem with 3 dogs but 0 cats? Still under the “total” pet number. Just wondering if there are any pet owners who may have dealt with this situation before.

No clue what to do with my dog

Sorry this post might be a little long but it needs some backstory. Last May I adopted a puppy because I was feeling really down after a very messy breakup (I know that's not the thing to do in hindsight but at the time I thought having something to take care of and keep me occupied would help).

I should preface by saying this is my first dog and I'm 24, 23 at the time I got her. She's now about 25 pounds and not getting any bigger so she's never going to be a really big dog. She was only about 14 weeks old when I got her and she was a really sweet puppy. The vet told me not to let her outside a lot because she wasn't old enough for her parvo shots (plus I lived in an apartment at the time which apparently is a much easier place to catch parvo) so we had to keep her inside a lot as she was growing up. The more she grew up the more I started to realize what a high energy dog she is. She would chew on anything in sight, was impossible to house-train, and would scream like a banshee any time we put her in her kennel. So that started a daily routine of me getting home from work, taking her for a walk, bringing her back in and having her immediately pee or poop on the floor/destroy something expensive, put her back in her kennel as punishment, have her scream bloody murder with no sign of stopping for hours, rinse and repeat.

Fast forward to now and I'm living in a house with a few roommates. The house has a yard which I was thrilled about because it would give her an outlet for her energy while I'm at work. This worked for a while and she would almost never have an accident in the house (I would mainly let her hang out in my room because she jumps on people and tries to steal food which annoys my roommates. Another two things I can not get her to stop doing). She wouldn't use the bathroom in her kennel at night and would immediately go do her business when I would put her in the yard before heading to work. I can't have her out at night because she runs around the room and keeps me up (I have to get up very early for my job) plus she will find something to destroy the minute I'm not watching her.

Well our back fence is pretty old and our landlord is dragging his feet fixing it. So she started finding ways out of the yard. She would find loose fence posts and escape into the neighborhood. She's the friendliest dog in the world and doesn't have a mean bone in her body but the neighbors don't know that so when they see a loose dog running around of course they're concerned. Had to run to a neighbor's house once to get her because she was in their front yard and another time I actually had animal control give me a call because she got out and they found her. Well as soon as I had fixed every loose board in the fence I thought my troubles were over. Not the case. I get home the next day and she's chewed a hole straight through the wood thus making another hole for her to get out of. This is a hole I can't fix and I don't want to chain her in the yard so now she can't be left out there alone. And even if someone's out there with her she'll just try to get out again. She doesn't listen to anyone but me so if someone tries to yell at her as she's escaping she doesn't even care.

So until the fence is fixed she has to stay inside. This is a problem because as I said, if I'm not with her she has to stay in her kennel or else she will wreck everything in sight. This means she mostly does her business in her kennel overnight, which I have to clean every morning. I really do love the little shit and I hate having her cooped up all day because I can tell she's not happy but I don't really have any other options. I feel like she's just untrainable because everything I've tried has failed. I would really love some advice on what to do about this.

TL;DR my 9 month old dog is wild, won't listen, impossible to house-train, and is chewing holes in the back fence and getting out constantly. I have hardly any dog experience, please help.

Best non-yappy small dog

I have a Labrador already and I’m thinking about rescuing a pound dog as a companion. I’m keen on a smaller dog this time, to keep the food costs down somewhat. I have small children as well.

Any recommendations on a good small family dog that is preferably not yappy?

Also I love in Australia

In desperate need of help. My 2 cats who used to get along perfectly now can’t even look at each other without hissing and going at it. I’m currently locked in my room with one cat because when I leave the other smells the first cat and tries to attack me.

Saturday night something happened between the two, don’t know what but they started fighting and I separated them with separate food/water bowls. The litter box is in my room and I don’t have another litter box so I’ve been switching the cats every few hours between my bedroom and the rest of the house. Now I was thinking in a day or so things would be back to normal, but nope. This morning they fought and I read you aren’t supposed to let them “fight it out” so I tried my best to get one cat out of the room and was able to.

Tonight when trying to switch the cats I barely open my door and the other cat not in my bedroom instantly starts hissing and howling so it sets off the bedroom cat and I have to close the door so the other one doesn’t run in. Now I also wanted a new beer so I barely opened the door a crack and squeezed out. But the cat not in the bedroom started hissing at me and following me like he was gonna attack me! I kind of fast walked to the fridge, grabbed a beer and fast walked back to my room and shut the door quickly but now I’m trapped and kind of nerve wracked by him.

What the heck do I do?! If I can’t even pick him up to take him to the vet I’m at a loss. Not to mention I’m supposed to be moving to a new place this weekend. I haven’t even packed anything yet so a move isn’t disrupting his behavior yet but I’m really at a loss.

My foster cat hasn’t been adopted for a year so I’m deciding to keep her, but she still won’t get along with my other animals and won’t leave my room

I’ve tried getting them slowly used to each other. Nothing seems to work. My foster cat who I’ve grown attached to absolutely will not leave my room. I’ve tried leaving the door open, taking her out of the room and not letting her back in, slowly introducing her outside of the room, but still nothing seems to work. Even if I put my other animals in a different room, she just hates going outside my room. She grew up in a construction zone and watched all of her littler including her mom get killed by the construction workers. Luckily someone decided to pick her up and save her. Now she’s with me. No one had wanted her. I’ve tried desperately to get her adopted. Now I don’t think that’s an option. She has lived in my room for a YEAR. I’ve moved her litter box and food outside of my room. She would rather starve than go outside my room. It’s extremely difficult to keep her outside my room because she easily sneaks past my legs whenever I have to go into my room. I know I probably didn’t start out the way I should, but she was just so frightened of everything. I thought after a couple weeks I could start introducing her to my cats. One of my cats HATE her. Ironically her name is sweetie. She attacks my cat with no warning. She will be sitting still, talk completely still, ears perked up, then all of a sudden she full on jumps on my cat and shows her no mercy. I’ve gotten injured multiple times pretty badly from this. At this point I do not know what to do. My dog which is extremely old and acts like a puppy, not at all trained goes after anything that runs. If my cat were to just walk past him he wouldn’t do anything to her. When she runs the only thing he does is chase her, won’t attack or anything. My cat has attacked him out of complete fear. She’s not the brightest and I’m pretty sure she can’t tell the different between my three other animals. If anyone can help that would be extremely appreciated!!

Hairy Hands - dog petting website

So I just finished my 2nd 40 for the night and I was petting the shit out of my dog and I thought to myself, what if I started a website that would be like YouTube but just exclusively contained videos of people petting the shit out of their dogs. Do you guys think their is a community that would appreciate this?

Bath and Body Works safe for cats?

I’m super aware of the possible essential oil poisoning in pets, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with any of the BBW products with “unsafe” oils like lavender, bergamot, etc? I’ve recently bought the Black Chamomile pillow mist and just noticed it has bergamot oil in it and my cat is known to sleep on my bed. Any advice would be great!

My new cat is going to turn into a little chunker! How do i know when shes eaten too much or needs more?

For starters i have 2 cats. Francis who is a big cat (also stupid) and ako who is new.

Francis weve been free feeding for a long time. I know its not recommended (especially when its hard to tell if its cause of his breed, his thick hair, or just overweight to why hes so big. I think its all three).

We did the free eating thing cause

  1. Hes dumb and if he hasnt gotten fed in awhile he eats too fast and throws it up.
  2. Well thats actually it. Oh and cause he just ate a tiny amount than walked away. Always did that.

Well ive been trying to do meal times (one to reinforce what ive read online about the doors and eating on opposite sides, but two cause to help him lose weight). The problem has been francis.

So the first meal time he ate a few bites and left. So i put away the food bowl.

Then the second time at night he ate very little despite not eating that much in the morning. Ako on the other hand, finished most, if not all of her tiny bowls (the bowls really are super small).

So i put the bowl away right? Well 25 minutes later hes ripping into the food bag to eat, so I put the food bowl out again, he eats for a second than walks away. He just likes to graze.

The other problem is if the food bowl isnt full or has a thin layee he wont touch it. Just keeps eyeing the darn thing. You can shake it and he will sometimes eat it. Sometimes I trick him and make him think i put some more in it and he will eat it then.

The problem is Ako and francis.

If she sees the food bowl she will go to it to eat. Unless she just finished hers. Than she ignores it.

But francis wants me to shake his food bowl later on (he kept staring at it like it was empty) and next thing i know, despite having just eaten an hour ago, Ako is eating his!

Am i not feeding her enough and shes still hungry? I think the general guide line is a cup to a cup and a half.

But i dont want them to be hungry you know? I want to make sure im feeding them enough.

Ugh too many feeding problems

Tried to help an injured cat.

Coming home I saw a cat dragging its self out of the street obviously severely injured and most likely just hit by a car. I turned around and stopped to check on the cat. It was breathing heavily and wouldn't move. I was afraid to touch it as I didn't want to cause it anymore pain than it was already experiencing. I didn't know what to do honestly never dealing with something like this so I grabbed a towel and crate i had in my car and scooped the cat up. Took it to the vet and had it examined. Broken femur and stomach damaged internally. The vet said there really wasn't a chance to save it at this point and suggested putting him to sleep. With a very heavy heart I paid the vet to do this. It really hits home because I have a cat myself. As sad as this makes me , I couldn't just leave it in the rain to suffer. Surely , I made the right decision?

Advice on Aggressive Cat?

My cat Ruby is becoming more and more aggressive, going as far as to attack my little brother and then scratch the shit out of my hands after I attempted to disiplin her. She has food and water, everyday. I also have a huge dog and he chases her and is encouraged to do so by my parents because they think my cat has a mental illness, due to the fact that the mother cat abandoned her on a patch of grass when she was born. It's becoming an issue because I'm constantly having scratches on my hands and she attacks people and attacks my dog (mainly because of him chasing her) and I'm worried, thoughts?

Stray Cat

My neighborhood has a lot of feral cats and strays and yesterday I heard this cat meowing near my apartment. Long story short it cozied up to me really quickly and was super sweet. This is not like any of the other cats in the neighborhood who run away if they see humans and avoid contact at all costs. It has a flee collar on it and won’t let me take it off. It doesn’t have any tags or name tags either. It’s a super sweet cat and I don’t want to call animal control because the shelter near me is a high kill shelter but, I have a dog who gets overly excited and annoys the cat. What do you guys recommend, should I keep the cat or maybe see if it has an owner in the area? Any help is appreciated!

Cat ate some REALLY OLD treats- should I be worried?

I was feeding my cats some random treats from our cat treat cupboard, when I noticed they smelled kind of weird and I looked at the package and they expired in Jan 2009!! Agh!! My roommate is a hoarder, must have found them in an old box and put them with the rest of the treats.

I don’t know if the bag had been opened previously. She ate two. I know it’s not a lot, but I’m a ball of anxiety. Could these seriously harm her or is it really just a risk of like an upset stomach? They were egg and tuna country squire premium? Idk I’ve never even heard of this brand. It’s probably some bargain brand, knowing roommate.

Anyone have any knowledge of cats eating obscenely old dry food?

Struggling pet owner

I dont know what to do anymore. I've had my cat for 9 years. In the last year or so hes started peeing on the carpet. We've taken him to the vet and nothing shows as being unhealthy. We've gotten him an anti anxiety plug in. We've added additional litter boxes. We've cleaned the carpet with enzymatic cleaners, vinegar everything we can think of and he still pees. We even had a floor estimate yesterday to replace our carpet with luxury vinyl planks. I'm at my wits end. I'm ready to get rid of him but this saddens me. Hes been part of my life for a long time.

I dont know what else to do.

I am worried that my dog is experiencing an intestinal blockage, what do I do?

I have a 6 year old pitbull who is acting very strange. My husband and I came home from a day of caring for his unwell mother and noticed our pup was acting weird. She has never been known to eat things she shouldn’t, but everything I am seeing points to an intestinal blockage. This started 48 hours ago and I began by giving her medication for nausea. She was prescribed this medication by our vet because she vomits pretty frequently for unknown reasons. We had the vet look into the vomiting and she came to the conclusion that she simply had a combination of motion sickness and a sensitive tummy. Her medication always seems to work and she feels better within a few hours of taking it. This time however, that was not the case. She started off nonstop licking her mouth and swallowing. Which is normal when she feels like she needs to vomit. I gave her medication and hours later she was still exhibiting the behavior. Today she has vomited the equivalent of three full meals, and has had bouts of diarrhea. In her stool I was able to see very small pieces of a tennis ball. I have no clue where she would have found a tennis ball as she is constantly around us, and is now allowed to have most toys (including tennis balls) because she rips them up and makes a mess. She has never eaten a toy, she normally just plays with them. All of the toys in the house are unbreakable because we know she enjoys chewing on them and do not want her to destroy them. Now she has begun to shake in pain and pin her ears back. I am completely unable to pay for anymore vet visits because I very recently paid over $1000 to treat my other dog who had congestive heart failure. She had to be euthanized which was very expensive and I wasn’t going to not get her ashes back which also ended up costing me a ton of money. Now it appears as though the only dog I have left requires emergency vet care and possibly a major surgery. How can I possibly get her the help she needs when I can’t afford it? I have been a very responsible owner to both dogs and have spent all the money I had saved to give end of life care to one. The remaining dog has always been up to date on vaccines and heart worm prevention as well as regular exams from our vet. I can not afford this emergency just a month after I paid for all the other extensive vet care my other pet received before she was euthanized. I would love to give my dog up for adoption to give her a chance but she is a pitbull covered in fighting scars and is 6 years old, I do not believe she will get any chance at all no matter where she goes. Atlanta shelters are filled to the brim with pitbulls and most are euthanized because there isn’t enough room. What are my options? How can I give my dog the care she needs?

Bump on dogs lips after killing rodent(s)

HELP!!! I just noticed that my two dogs have a bump on their mouth, but for the past three nights I have found three dead rats in our yard. Now today, they have a bump on their mouth. I’m afraid that they may have been infected and need to be taken to a vet whereas my mom is telling me to give them Benadryl (liquid) and I don’t think that’ll work.
