[NEW]Need some help, cat owner here.

So my family has adopted a 12 week old kitten. But she wont poop unless we sit her in the litterbox, we also have to take her to eat her food. She won't do anything on her own. We had her for about 2 and a half days now, she went from her mother and grandmother(both cats). Is she just scared or shy? Will this get better?

Edit: Forgot to add, she also peed on the floor yesterday.

Thanks :P

College and pets

So before college I had my chinchilla and my crested gecko. And my moms always been weird about letting me have pets, even though it is a thing I'm absolutely in love with and passionate about to the core. Now that I'm in college I'm afraid if I get any more pets it'll cause issues between us. At this point though now that I'm out of the house and older should I even have to care about her opinion of it? She would try to shame me for essentially doing what I love

Great day after all

Today we took Chais to the vet terrified we were would have to say goodbye; however, this old man (almost 17 yo) continues to surprise us. Heart and lungs are in great shape so we added pain meds to his life. Home for a much needed bath and dinner for all. We are celebrating!

New Cat Mom

Hello guys,

I adopted an adult male cat yesterday from the animal shelter. It was love at first sight for me. However, my cat Toffy (the name I am planning on giving him) is overweight. I was fine with this as I was not wanting a very active cat. But Toffy seems to be very very lazy. Lazy to the point that he rarely even eats. My concern is that I am not sure whether he is lazy or something else. I even tried to get him to play fetch and with the hanging stick toy but he does not budge. Do you guys have any suggestions as to what I could do. Anything would help. Thank you

What weird or unexpected foods do your cats love?

I recently learned my kittens both LOVE the seasoned seaweed that comes in those little snack-sized packets from the Asian grocery store. They also like popcorn and go crazy over tortilla chips. I’m curious what random foods other cats like!

Getting sick kitty to eat!

Any advice about my sweet baby would be greatly appreciated!

Pixie was very sick over the weekend- not eating or drinking, drooling (ropey saliva). We've been to the vet and the only thing they were able to find is that she's slightly anemic, and she has mouth sores and a sore on the end of her tongue (from having it hanging out). She is on an antibiotic.

We have to administer fluids underneath her skin since she's not drinking. But for the life of us, we cannot get her to eat anything. Her mouth is probably too sore. We've tried soft foods like tuna, wet cat food slightly warmed up, we even tried syringe feeding her tonight some baby food.

She seems to have an appetite- she wants to eat, but she's just having a hard time. She drools more when she tries to eat, probably because the poor baby is hungry. If anyone has had to deal with this and has some good advice, I would appreciate it so much.

The doctor did give us an appetite stimulant, but we were hoping to not have to use it. It recently got approved by the FDA and made us kinda nervous the first time the vet made us use it. It did work to get her to eat, so if she's not eating, we will go back to using that.

Saying Goodbye and What To Do With Littermate

Sadly we have to say goodbye to our sweet 16yo kitty tomorrow. According to the vet she most likely is having some heart issues and the medicine hasn't perked her up, her edema has reduced but she's obviously weak and suffering, won't eat, not even her favorite wet food.

What should we do about her sister? They've been together their whole lives, we adopted them together, they've moved house to house together, and I can't imagine there only being one. Today as I snuggle our sweet girl in my lap her sister is sticking close by. But they've never been close, they don't cuddle or play together, this is the most affection I can remember seeing from them. I'm worried my other girl will be hurt or confused. I also worry I'm pushing some of my sadness onto this poor surviving cat!

Where do I draw the line with morals among my friends with pets?

I'm very sensitive regarding animal abuse, and very informed on cat, and dog psychology so when I go to my friends' I see some not-so-ideal living standards for them.

Stuff like my friend leaving their dogs in cages, and/or smoking cigarettes all day in the house, or nutrition choices.

I understand that it's not my pet, but where do I draw the line here? These are the only friends that I have, and they accept me for me.

Is there any known correlation between flea treatments and cancer?

As of right now I use Frontline Plus on my cat for fleas. I got to wondering about the chemicals used in the product and whether or not they are safe or if they may give him cancer later in life.

Are there safer to use, but still effective treatments? How do you feel about flea collars? Do you have recommendations or tips on how to keeps fleas away?

Senior cat swallowing dry food without chewing - vomits frequently. Can crushing up the kibble help?

My senior (13 yo) cat doesn't have most of her teeth (adopted this way), and pretty much swallows her food whole without chewing, and vomits several times a week.

We tried feeding her wet food, but she only drinks the stew and leaves the chunks of actual food alone.

Would grinding up / crushing the kibble into smaller pieces help the vomiting?

I'm thinking about purchasing a food chopper and just cutting up her dry food into chewed-size chunks.

Background on kitty's health:

  • She had a physical exam 2-3 months ago and her blood work was excellent. Vet commented that she is in great shape.
  • When she does vomit, it's always right after eating (though she vomits 3-4 times a week, not after every meal), sometimes in the morning, sometimes afternoon, sometimes dinner.
  • The vomit is just her unchewed kibble (no blood/bile, etc).
  • She doesn't act sick, lethargic, or in pain. She has no diarrhea. Her belly isn't tender to touch.

Adopted a new cat, not sure how she feels

About a week ago, I adopted my very first cat from the humane society. She's 4 and a half, and very shy, but so loving and gentle. I'm a little concerned about her nervousness levels, since she's constantly hiding.

I use our bedroom as a "safe room" and she's always under the bed. Anytime I even look at her while she's exploring, she'll dart back under. During the day, while I'm at work or school, it seems like she's only under the bed unless she needs to eat or poop. She doesn't even scratch furniture or use the cat tower/bed.

The thing is, when I'm around, she'll come out and play, and she'll constantly roll over and around when she's coaxed. When I go to the bathroom to take a shit, she follows me. But I would love love love to get to a point where she permanently resists going under the bed and is confident enough to roam out in the open or even stay on top of my bed. It just seems like it'll never happen, and the under-bed is now her forever spot? What should I do, if anything?

I've never forcefully dragged her out from under there, she just comes up to me whenever. Thanks for anyone who's reading and wants to give a beginner cat owner some advice 🥺

How do I get my cat to stop eating my dogs food?

I schedule my dogs meals to where I’m around when he’s supposed to be eating, but my cat always manages to sneak in whenever I’m not paying attention. I spray him with a water bottle, but he’s relentless. And it doesn’t help that my dog likes to graze and not eat it all at once, so I’ll be in the bathroom minding my own business and my cat will eat the dog food when my dog is away for a second. How can I train my cat to not eat the dog food?

FLEAS!!!!

I have a dog and a cat. The dog has access to a fenced in backyard, the cat is indoors. I noticed fleas on my dog a few weeks ago. Instantly put some topical medicine on him (he wasn't up to date with his treatments, totally my fault). I then went out and got a flea collar which i waited 3-4 days to put on (didn't want to stack too many meds at once). The fleas were still on him. I also noticed them on the cat. At this point I bought a new flea collar for the dog (stronger type) and a flea collar for the cat.

I bought some flea shampoo and gave him and the cat baths. Vacuumed the entire house and all furniture. Put collars on once they were dry. This fixed the cats issue. The dog is still having issues. I waited 2 weeks from when I first put the topical on and put some more on. I know it says 30 days, but reading online I saw 2 week applications for infestations are okay.

I separated his hair and put the medicine on 3-4 locations on his back (where he can't turn around to mess with). He's a standard poodle so hes a little bigger of a boy. Put the flea collar back on and called it a day. I also vacuumed again.

The fleas are back a week later. I noticed the cat scratching and she has them too. I gave the dog another flea bath, but I'm just gonna use topical on the cat since she despises baths.

I bought some chewable, oral fast-acting flea-killing medicine for the dog. If this doesn't work, what do I do? I feel like I've tried everything. I've spent hundreds of dollars of topical medicine, shampoo, collars, and now chewables. I cannot get rid of these fleas.

Just adopted a kitten, I‘m afraid she needs more attention

Hey there. I‘ve adopted a kitten on monday. I had grown up with them and missed them, so I decided to adopt a cat. I thought I would be „ready“ for the responsibility, but I‘ve come to realize that I‘m not.

I had prepared my appartment, made a cat shelf highway, diy-ed toys. I re-read books and articlesand was really excited to have a cat again. My first (and only) cat had been distant. Just went outside, came home for food and sleep, it took very little energy to look after her.

Now the kitty I‘ve adopted is the opposite. I had prepared myself for 2-3 play sessions of 10-30 minutes. But she wants to play like 4-5 times a day. This might seem like an easy problem to solve for most people - just play with her more, but I can physically not do that. I have very bad fatigue and other conditions that leave me quite exhausted. She wants to run around and play a lot and I simply don‘t have the energy for that. I‘ve tried toys she can play with on her own, but she only likes the ones I have to move (string, wand toys). I‘ve tried food puzzles, but she doesn‘t have much interest in them.

I also have an insane amount of anxiety because of this, I don‘t want her to feel bored or unsatisfied. Do I need to find a better family for suki? Somewhere she gets more attention, can go outside maybe? I don‘t want her to be unhappy and it would certainly be easier for me to find her a new family, when she‘s only been with me for a few days. I don‘t want to love her and then realize I have to give her away.

Currently I am also unemployed, but that will change soon. She‘ll get even less attention then. Is this fair?

Is my cat infact a dog?

Ive had my kitty for about 2 months now and i noticed a few weird things. He rarely meows.and i mean rarely. He doesnt wake me up in the morning. Not once He either plays with a toy next to me Or just naps.the second i wake up he wakes up. He loves to play fetch. With anything even a sock. He loves going on daily walks which i started doing with him a couple of weeks ago.(just in a field near me) And he always pees on the grass when ever we are out. Heres the strong one, My previous cat despised water. Bath time was a nightmare. I expected the worst when i tried giving the new kitty a bath, when i first dipped him he resisted for about 5 seconds BUT then he just stood there and did nothing the entire time, didnt meow, didnt try to run out. Just calmy sat there and let me shampoo him and rinse him and afterwards he sat in my towel as i rubbed him. So i ask again. Is my cat a dog?

Found kitten, please help!

My coworker found a kitten who is about 4 weeks old, and didn't want her.

She is adorable, so I decided to take her. The problem is, she has a few fleas.

The vet said she isn't bad off, and said I could use some Frontline Spray on her until she is old enough to get Resolve, but now I am freaking out about fleas.

I gave her bath with Dawn to hopefully kill the fleas, though we didn't end up getting any off of her. I am going to comb her tomorrow (and the next day and the next)

My question is: I'm in an apartment so is there a way to minimize the amount of fleas, and am I doomed to has a infestation?!

How do I keep my cat isolated post surgery?

I have this old dog crate that seemed like it would be big enough, but I don’t think I can comfortably get a litter box in there. Tried using a smaller baking pan as a substitute and she pawed at it and peed on the floor in confusion. With the bed and food/water, there’s not much room left, and I don’t know how to keep her contained like that for 10-14 days.

Also, she managed to turn her cone inside out. I’m cool with it at the moment, but I’m worried about when the incision starts itching.

Last but not least, I forgot to ask the vet, but how will I know if she’s in pain and needs her meds?

Seeking advice for my distressed kitty

So, my normally very spunky and energetic 2 year old cat took a weird turn last Friday. I first noticed something was up when she wasn't coming to sleep with me at night like she usually does. I then noticed that she was sleeping ALL DAY, and hiding out in dark places. Then, she stopped eating (this only lasted about a day - she's coming out of hiding twice a day to eat now). The next weird thing that started happening is she's growling/crying a bit occasionally when I pet her.

So obviously, I took her to the vet - she wouldn't let anyone touch her. She has a history of anxiety and lashing out when she's afraid, but never this bad. The vets had welders gloves on and wrapped her in a towel and still couldn't carry out the exam. So, the vet sent us on our way, saying she's probably just fighting off an infection. Okay, whatever. I went back in yesterday to tell them she's still acting the same, but they said not to bring her back unless she gets noticeably worse. Sent me home with metacam for possible pain and told me not to worry too much. But I AM worrying. Shes a bit more active today, but I just tried to pet her and she growled and hissed at me. I'm so worried about her. She's obviously in pain.

Has anyone dealt with anything like this? Should I be taking her back to the vet, even though they say she's fine? Is she just grouchy because she's feeling under the weather? Am I just being paranoid? Any info or advice would be super appreciated.

TL;DR: cat acting weird for a week; sleeping all day, hiding, not eating as much as usual, growling/crying/hissing when I pet her. Vet says she's fine, but I'm concerned. Help please!

Advice on how to find a lost pet’s owner

I found a very sweet lab that is very obviously someone’s baby. She is not microchipped. I have called animal control with her description and left my number in case they get any calls from her owner. I have posted her on a Facebook lost pet page for my area and on my neighborhood app. She had a collar but no tags. I called and gave animal hospitals in my area her description and left my name and number. I tried to go door to door but I live in a large neighborhood and gave up after no one was answering their door. I took her on a walk hoping she would lead me to her house but that didn’t work either.

She’s in my backyard and I’m totally unprepared for a dog. I need to find her mom ASAP. It’s cold out today but I can’t let her in bc I have unfriendly cats. I put blankets and towels to keep her warm but I have no idea what I’ll do with her tonight.

Any ideas on other things I could try to find her humans?

Cat keeps running away from home for months at a time - anything we can do to stop this?

We've got 2 cats - Fluffy & Salem, Salem is allowed out whenever he likes and always comes back. Fluffy is allowed out when it's light out, but if he gets out and its dark he normally doesn't come home. He's just come back after 2 weeks away, his longest period away was over 2 months.

So far we've tried TabCat trackers (Range is too poor, and they are fairly unreliable) and bought a MicroChip catflap and put a curfew on it so he can't get out past 5pm (but somehow he manages to bypass this and escape).

Neither of these have helped obviously, and he continues to run away! Is there anything else we can do to keep him at home? He loves being outside to much to be an indoor cat, and if we tried to he would still escape somehow.

Are there any recommended GPS trackers or anything like that that's worth looking into? He always comes back with ticks on him and the same collar he left with, so I don't think he's found another home.

Cat hiding under house

Hi fellow pet lovers,

I noticed yesterday evening that I hadn't seen my cat in a few hours. He is a neutered indoor/outdoor cat. My dad finally found him hiding under the house. He is in a spot that we can't get to, but moves his head and looks at us when we shine the flashlight at him and talk to him. He has never hid before and we are concerned that he might be sick or injured. I have put food and water at the edge of the house.

Is the “new” pressure treated wood safe for a dog house?

I know that, in general, pressure treated wood is a big “no-no” for use in anyway that pets could potentially be exposed to the chemicals that were used in the treating process. My question, however, is:

Is the new (post-2003 made) pressure treated wood, that was not treated with arsenic, safe? Or should I just use untreated wood?

Cat needs full mouth extraction - one vet quoted $5k, 2 others quoted $1-2k. Why the difference?

The vets are in 2 different locations with similar costs of living, but the difference in price was striking. The $1k vet has really great reviews on both Yelp and Google, and they're in the area I'm moving to, so I've already set the appointment up with them (easier follow up appointments). They said anesthesia and x-rays are all included in the $1k.

Another vet in the same area quoted me $1.5k, also with great reviews, but I had already set up an appointment with the $1k vet and didn't want to cancel (the $1.5k vet's receptionist was really rude and nasty to me when I called, and I only got the $1.5k quote when another receptionist from the office called me back a few days later apologizing). So it makes me think that maybe $1k-2k is the norm for that area...?

I know another cat who got the FME and their owners paid $4k. This was a 3rd location, across the country, also a fairly high COL. My local vet who quoted me $5k had me pay $800 for the dental cleaning, and said I wouldn't likely be finding vets with a much better quote than $4k-5k.

Anyway, just wanted to know everyone else's experiences with this? This is completely new to me (I got the cat in September), so I don't know what's normal or not normal...

FWIW, I don't think I'm being scammed at the $1k vet since their reviews are so good and also because the other vet quoted me similar. Is it possible that the practices are in that area are older/more mature so have more resources and can charge less...?

Cat has hookworm and roundworm for a month now. Treatment doesn't seem to be effective. Need advice.

I have three cats. My youngest — herein called Chestnut — is about 1 year old, maybe 7 months, I'm not sure. He's young but not a newborn, I know that much. My girlfriend caught him as a stray wandering around her house and he's been vaccinated and neutered. They checked him for worms and said they found nothing. I noticed, however, that he took really big, smelly poops and sometimes missed the litterbox.

Well, one day I find there shit in the floor and I find out that Chestnut is the culprit. Not only that, but his butthole looks angry — swolen, red and puffy. So, I take him to the vet and they do a fecal and find out that he has hookworms and roundworms and put him on three medications — one for the diarrhea which I give every 8 hours, one for intestinal inflammation which I give every day, twice a day, and one for the worms, which I give once a day, for three days, then after three weeks, start giving it again for three days.

This has been going on since late September and I've had to put him in a cage because he keeps pooping everywhere and keeping him in the cage makes it easier to clean if its in one area. I try to let him out every so often so he gets playtime and of course I feed him and give him water.

Last Saturday, I had to drop Chestnut off at the Vet's kennel because me and my gf had plans that weekend and I couldn't find anyone to watch him. When I picked him up, the vets said his poop looked like it was getting better and more solid. But I, in my infinite dumbassery, take that as meaning that he's 100% a-ok, and let him sleep in my bed. Well, I wake up covered in poo and have to wash my sheets for the umpteenth time and take a good shower. I figure "Ok, maybe he's just coming off the tail end of it and he'll be better soon." Wrong. Last night, I did the usual anus check. Still looks healthy, except for the long, white noodley worm sticking out of it. It was wiggling, too.

I called the vet back and we're gonna try to put him on another round of the de-wormer meds, but I don't know. I'm at my wits end and I just want the poor guy to have his freedom. But I can't if he's gonna be shitting everywhere.

As for the other three, I've also placed them on the dewormer, as per the vet's orders, as a preventative measure.

What should I do? Should I keep doing what the vet says, or are there other treatments I should ask about?

BF's cat keeps throwing up her food

Hi all,

I'm new here so please go easy :)

My BF's cat is a British Shorthair silver tabby, she's a year and a half old.

He has a food dispenser with a timer that dispenses food 3 times a day with a certain amount, that over the course of the day, totals to the correct amount for her weight.

We had to do this because a) She was demolishing copious amounts of her food and then throwing up and b) The vet told us she was overweight - for reference this all happened after I moved in nearly 2 months ago, I have no idea if she was like this before I moved in. We've also cut back on the treats.

In the past 2-3 months we've tried her on wet and dry food, we've switched her bowl to a "puzzle bowl" where she had to work to get the food. The second of the two was an issue because she'd sit at the bowl all day and continually dig out as much food as she wanted, eat it off the floor and on a couple of occasions, would throw it back up.

She hasn't thrown any of her food back up since we switched her back to her automatic feeder - which is on the smallest portion possible, until today. She wolfs down the entirety of every portion, and today when she threw it up, it was like she hadn't chewed it and then swallowed, I was worried it was going to be mushy and get smushed into the carpet - it didn't, because the pieces were virtually solid. After she's eaten she will continually want food, she meows at me and my partner, will follow us into the kitchen, rub up against us etc.

How do we stop her throwing her food back up? Should we take her to the vet?

My Cat Doesn't Want To Eat Dry Food Anymore

Hi guys I have just adopted a cat which is around 1 year old and for the first few I fed her kibble and i decided to buy some wet food for her to eat twice per week. After i gave her the wet food, now she doesn't want to eat the kibble anymore. What should I do? she is barely eating the kibble. Wet food is slightly too expensive for me to afford feeding her daily compared to kibble. Any help guys?

My cat can't keep her butt in the litterbox when she pees.

So, my cat likes to pee on the actual side of the litterbox. Unfortunately, this means she misses... A lot. We have one of those huge wooden litterbox storage hider things with a highsided uncovered litterbox inside, but she still manages to stick her butt outside the litterbox and pee all over the wood.

This wasn't really an issue before, because we had top load litterboxes, but we can't have those in our new apartment due to the amount of litter my cats like to fling. She has PLENTY of room. This litterbox is huge, and she did it with normal litterboxes, too. It's just becoming a problem now because it's getting on the wood and is stinking up my apartment.

Has anyone ever had this problem? Is it a behavioral problem, or is my cat just a doofus?

Dog has a tick and won't let us get it off him.

It's near his eye and he hates being held in place, enough to bite my girlfriend and I quite viciously. Does anybody else have a dog like this? Did you go to a vet to get his snarly ass put out so you could remove the tick? How much did it cost?

How to clean up pet snot

(Tw): What do I do if my roommate’s boyfriend is abusing his dogs in our home?

(Tw: this has to do with animal abuse so read at your own discretion)

So I’ll start off with the background information. I’m currently in this roommate situation with 3 other people. One of my roommate’s boyfriends is pretty much living here. It’s been like this since last spring according to my roommate who’s been here since then.

In August, an anonymous witness reported seeing a male of the boyfriend’s description in front of our home, hitting and kicking one of the dogs in the yard. Animal cruelty services came to our home the next day, and our home became marked as a potential animal cruelty home. Nothing else was done in the matter because there was no video surveillance.

After and prior to that, my roommates and I have witnessed instances of hitting the dogs, but we didn’t formally record the information.

Tonight, my roommate’s boyfriend hit his dog again. The hit was so hard that my roommate and I heard it on the top floor. When I made a comment about it, his girlfriend yelled at me and he looked like he was about to attack me.

I have formally documented that instance and others and my roommate is documenting what she’s witnessed. We want to report him to animal cruelty services. I’ve read that photo and videos are important in the process to doing anything, but we don’t have those. Is our witness information enough, or do we need more?

Thank you.

I’m moving my dog out, I need help!

This might sound silly but I need help! I’m moving my dog from one side of the house to the other side. The side he’s currently at is on a mix of dirt, some grass and gravel and for some reason the previous owner of the home had placed a layer of what look like an old carpet. Don’t ask me why. But the old carpet had grown and mixed in together with everything else. My question is how do I clean the area up to make it safe for kids to play.

Kitten is driving me crazy

I adopted a kitten several months ago and he’s almost 8 months now, but he’s been stressing me out because he plays with literally everything and disciplining hasn’t worked. He’s such a snuggle bug when he’s calm but otherwise he is a lot to handle.

We have a 3-year-old who we got when she was 1 so she had passed the kitten phase for the most part and only occasionally caused trouble. Now she’s calm and well-behaved and while we expected the kitten to be hyper, we thought if we followed people’s advice on disciplining that it would be fine. But we’ve tried everything and nothing works. He’s clever and knows what he isn’t allowed to do so he does it when we’re not looking. I’ve tried a spray bottle which worked on my older cat but only deters the kitten for a short time before he tries again. Same goes for everything else - gently scruffing, hissing, clapping. We put foil on our turntable (we don’t have a spare room for that right now) and he instead wants to play with it and goes on the turntable anyway. Bitter apple spray only works for half an hour and then it wears off so he goes back to chewing on cables. He’s also long in length and uses it to try to reach high places - we don’t let him in the bedroom but he’s been standing on his hind legs and pulling down on the door handle a couple times a day. I’m nervous he’s going to figure out how to open the door entirely soon. We also have to put all our cutting boards away because we once left it out and found litter on it after getting home. We put a scat on the counter but it doesn’t always catch them.

I love him, but some days he gets on my nerves. And yes he does have a lot of toys and we play with him every day. Now that he’s almost 8 months I’m worried he’ll never calm down. I guess I mainly want some reassurance because it feels like my friends who have kittens have really well-behaved ones and don’t have to deal with this. I’m discouraged and tired and just want to know if it’ll get better.

Am I a bad person for not helping with my mothers pets

So I live with my mom. She has a 15 year old cat, and an 8 year old dog. The cat which shes never took to the vet looked on the skinny side, so I suggested she take her in for a check up. She pretty much told me no, and said that she will gain weight in the winter. I thought that sounded reasonable, so I dropped it for about a week, then I ended up taking the cat in. It ended up having hyperthyroidism. My mom got mad, and said she not treating the cat. She folded, and is now, paying for the meds. They want to test her thyroid levels in a couple of day, and I'm sure shes expecting me to pay for that. Her dog has always been itchy, but I noticed today he was scratching at his lip, and some of the fur is missing with a couple of scabs. He doesn't seem to be completely miserable. I might see him scratching at it a couple times a day. I brought it up to my mom, and she said he probably scratches it on something. I just left it at that, because I don't want to argue with her about it. I had a dog up until about a month ago, when she passed away of cancer. I took her to the vet. Whenever something didnt seem right. I loved her to death, and think about her everyday, but I was always so stressed out about her health, and now that shes gone, I'm worried about the health of my mothers pets. I also just dont make much money. And I'm not really in the position to start throwing money at her pets. I'm also just trying to save. I've already spent about 400 dollars this past month to find out what was wrong with her cat. I just feel guilty knowing her pets may be experiencing the slightest of discomfort, and I'm not doing anything to help. I cant bring up anything regarding her pets health, because she flies off the hinges. I've contemplated just moving out, so I dont have to be around her pets, and therefore wont worry as much about them, but than, I'd feel guilty knowing that she may be neglecting them.

How to keep my cat from scratching my door.

Pickle is my cat. He has had a habit of chewing electric cords ever since he was a kitten. I am a musician and sound engineer, so I keep my studio off limits to Pickle. The problem is he scratches on my door and whines constantly when i'm practicing. I've tried using a spray bottle with water but he has learned to run away once I open the door to give him a disciplinary spritz. It also seems like he is acclimatizing to the water bottle. Are there any cat psychology tricks for curtailing this whiney little guy? I just want to be able to work in peace but he is severely limiting my ability to get anything done.

Found a dog and I’m suspicious of individual claiming it. Need advice

So Monday evening my mother found a puppy roaming the streets of a very bad neighborhood that is known for being a dog dumping ground. She step out of the car and open her back seat and said, “you wanna go buh-bye??” And the puppy jumped in her car. She drove around looking for anyone out side to see if they knew the dog. No one was out and after an hour and it was getting dark, she took the dog home.

He was very very dirty, had to have 3 baths, grooming, ears were full of gunk. Had fleas, seemed very hungry. Obviously he was fed, cleaned and notice he had a black and exposed canine tooth. This morning I called the humane society to report him found and was directed to local Animal control. Took him to my vet to get looked at. No microchip. Tooth will be ok it’s a puppy tooth and is close to falling out anyway. Given flea treatment, anti parasite.

Several people have contacted me through the various placing the dog is posted. It’s none of their dogs after further investigation. This dog is considered very fashionable and very expensive and he is rather impressive for his breed.

Individual contacted me claiming she is representing another person whom doesn’t speak English. Ok. The photos they gave are all out of focus, blurry, and it makes it nearly impossible to look at identifying colorings and markings due to the quality of their photos. None are dated. None have other family members in the photo other that a shoe being worn.

I asked for some documentation showing the dog is theirs, including a pet license, or vet records, proof of purchase. Something. “They are looking and can’t find any papers”. Ok what is the name of the vet, name of the dog and name of owner? Refuses to give even the name of the dog, refuses vet and won’t give her “contact’s” name. Where did you get the dog? “She says she got it from a flea market”

I told her that I need clear, focused photos (not ones that look like a 2005 flip phone camera), or documentation like listed above.
She basically stopped talking after saying she’s going to the local animal control. I said “please do, I want to make sure this dog goes to it’s actual owner”.

Am I out of line here? I’m looking for some guidance on this and I don’t want this dog to be mistreated and I don’t want him to go to not his true owner. I am fine with him being with me until this is solved.

HELP! Flea bath for cat

I've had these kittens since they were 8 weeks old, a boy and girl. The male cat is very friendly, but the female has always been skittish. Brought them to a clinic to be fixed about 2 months ago and have been dealing with fleas since then, and I can't actually touch the female cat to bathe her. Shes taken a co-star pill (I gave it to them separately, so I know she had one) but she wont let me come close enough to grab her to give her a bath. Shes always been very hesitant for contact, we've tried to let her adjust at her own rate (she'll lay on the couch with you if you sit still long enough, but darts off if you try to touch her) but at this point she kind of NEEDS to be bathed for her sake and the sake of not spreading fleas. I've managed to bathe the male cat (while being clawed to death and always offer wet food/treats during and after bathing) but I can't get near her. I'm about ready to dose her with valium to knock her out so I can catch her. Please please HELP!

Kitten has fleas after treatment

Hi! I've had my kitten for about 8 weeks now. When I got him the lady said he had been treated for fleas, but I noticed him itching so after about 2 weeks I bought a Bob Martin flea and tick treatment and applied it (I've read really crappy things about Bob Martin treatments now so regret it). Anyway, I have noticed him kicking and scratching a lot so I checked today and found fleas on him (he's an indoor kitty so he must've had them since I brought him home).

I went to the local pet shop to get him another treatment but they wouldn't let me as they said I could overdose him if I give him the treatments too close together. The thing is, I can't remember how long ago I gave him it, or how long the treatment said it lasts for... I'm guessing he had the treatment about 4 weeks ago.

Is there anything I can do? I feel sorry for him having them, and I also don't like the thought that it's gonna be another couple of weeks until I can give him another treatment... I also don't like the thought of then living in my carpets/bedding etc. My mum suggested using a nit-comb and combing them out but I wasn't sure if that would work?

Roommate found a flea on her cat, who I never let in my room.. should I freak out?

Hi there. I live in a 2 bed/2 bath apartment with a roommate and her cat. Because I'm slightly allergic, I don't let the cat in my room. Earlier this month, the vet found some flea bites on the cat, so we did a bug bomb, vaccumed and washed all the communal rugs, etc. A few weeks later, my roommate found a flea on her cat. She's washing everything again, but I'm wondering how freaked out I need to be about my own space. We have hardwood floors, and I changed my sheets, but I'm worried they could be in my room somehow. Advice?

Need some help with newly adopted cat

Hey all,

Just a little over a week ago, my partner and I have brought home an 8 year old cat from the Humane Society. The first couple of days we had her at least one of us was home, not bothering her or forcing her to do anything, just present. While she would spend some of the time under the couch hiding, she would occasionally come out and sit near us on the couch. Again, no forced pets or movement.

Just yesterday we took her to the vet to find out she has an ear infection. The vet prescribed her some ear drops, and told us to start cleaning her ears often, give her 2 drops in each ear each day, and also to start brushing her to prevent matting.

We started these procedures yesterday, but it is clear that she will not voluntarily sit still for us, so we have had to hold her to do these things, which she very much does not like. We are not trying to be rough or cruel, we just want to help her conditions. But as soon as we even try to do these things, she runs and hides without coming out for hours on end, or we manage to get something done and she runs and hides until the next day at least.

My partner has suggested that we block off underneath the couch, so that we can always reach her if we need to give her drops/ brush her etc. I'm afraid that this will make her resent us even more, and create a fearful relationship between us, considering she is also just trying to adapt to a new environment. Is this something we could try to make it easier to give her her medicine?

We also want to make sure we don't make her fear us, making her hide all the time and we never get to see her/ interact with her.

What are some possible solutions to these issues? All help is greatly appreciated, thank you for reading and helping us out, we are concerned for her well-being.

Gradual Increase in Kitten's Meowing and Biting?

I have a kitten who is around 6 months old now that was a stray I rescued when she was around 8 weeks old (was living under a friends house with 5 other kittens and a mother). She has always been very social, energetic and sweet when she wasn't trying to play. I got her fixed around a month ago, and starting a bit before then it seems she's been meowing increasingly more for no apparent reason, usually just laying in a certain spot on the tile. She's had no problems eating, drinking or using the bathroom. She always has meowed a lot when I leave my place or keep her out of the room while I sleep (she'll keep me up otherwise), but not really while I'm near before this.

Additionally she's been very quick to bite when I pet her recently - before petting her was no problem and she'd rub up against me all the time for a long while, but now even when she's seemingly happy to see me when I get home I can only pet for 20 seconds or so before she starts to bite, but she's usually still purring when she does.

I've seen suggestions for solving similar problems involving getting another cat, but mine is quite aggressive towards other animals in general (hissing, growling, swatting at other cats and dogs she's encountered) so I don't think it'd be a good idea.

I called the vet and asked about it and they said they saw nothing wrong last time my kitten was in and that it could be her "teenage years" where they misbehave more often, but I still have my doubts. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing these behaviors or how I can curb them?

Cat has peed on bed twice in the past three weeks.

In need of some guidance, as the title says, my cat’s peed on the bed twice now, and I’m very frustrated. I’m also on mobile so apologies for that.

I’ve had him for just over a month. He’s a very good cat, doesn’t scratch the furniture, doesn’t hiss or scratch, none of that.

The first time it happened, I had forgot to clean the litter box for a couple days, I thought that was why. But I’ve been cleaning it every day since, using baking soda to keep the smell to a minimum, so I don’t think that’s why.

My mom believes it’s because he doesn’t like my boyfriend. We live together, but he’s my cat. If we break up, I take him. I don’t think that’s the reason why, but if it is, how do I fix this?

If not, any advice at all would really help me. Thanks in advance.

Was this a sign of aggression?

I have 3 dogs and 5 cats and currently foster the sweetest, hugest dog. I fell in love and want to keep her but she had a weird interaction with one of the cats. The dog is amazing with the other animals but she developed a weird fascination with one particular cat. Constantly tries to approach her and literally cries when the cat runs away. Yesterday she caught the cat sleeping in my husband's lap and started licking her. The cat looked very annoyed but didn't run away. After few licks she started nibbling the ears and then went for the head. It didn't seem aggressive, she wanted to playfully pick the cat up by the head, if that makes any sense. My husband managed to pull the cat away in time. It was extremely scary but none of them showed any signs of aggression, the cat just strutted away and the dog stayed there and started begging my husband for attention. I have 8 pets and have had countless fosters but I've never seen an interaction like that. I love her but I can't keep her if she's a danger to the other animals.

The dog is a hunting breed and we still don't leave her with the smaller animals without supervision. She was found on the street with an extremely heavy chain hanging from her neck and the vet said she most likely ran away from a puppy mill. She's around 3, adores people and usually lets other animals control their interaction, which makes this situation even weirder.

How to train cat to use new litter type?

Been using clumping clay litter for a while, noticed that my young cat is eating bits that track around or eating the bits that get stuck in his paws. I don't think this is healthy and I cant always be around to stop him. I want to use wood pellet litter since it won't get stuck in his paws as they are large pellets. Whats the best way to get him to use the new pellet litter? I followed the instructions on the bag to mix a little bit of the pellets at a time into his current litter, but I think it confused him and he tried to eat it.....any help appreciated.

Also, any recommendations for a brand of wood pellet litter? I heard tractor supply co pellets are popular but they dont ship to where I live. I do live near bigger stores like home depot, lowes, and ace hardware though. Im trying to not buy the expensive brands at petco.

One of my cats may lose her brother soon, what can I do?

We have two cats who are brother and aister, both 9. We just found out that the brother has lymphoma and may not be around for long.

The two of them were very close. They would groom each other then fight each other sometimes. Ever since he started getting sick, they haven't really done something like this in a while. Heck, they just curled up and groomed each other for the first time in a while... well it was mostly the sister who was doing the grooming.

Can you guys give me an idea of what this might do to his sister when the inevitable happens. We never had litter mates before. I don't know what to expect.

My cat is sick from fleas

Cosette is an indoor cat and hasn't been outside for about 9 years. She hasn't really had an issue with fleas because I get her treated monthly.

This summer was bad because my landlord feeds about 20 strays that keep having new litters in the basement and the fleas are just unmanageable. I've put down diatomaceous earth myself on the path between my car and my apartment stairwell, but they still come into my apartment on my clothes.

Cosette is a Russian Blue so her hair is short enough to use a flea comb. I only get one or two off if her at a time with the fine-toothed side, but she's been lethargic apart from scratching and she hasn't eaten in a day. Is there a disease she can get from fleas other than the usual worms or anemia?

Her gums are still pink and I haven't seen any of the "sesame seed" worm eggs in her stool.

She also doesn't have any flea dirt at all, but she does have a few fleas at a time. I'm worried she got something communicable from a flea bite but I don't know if that's possible.

EDIT: Spelling errors

My dog won't stop barking.

Ok so, I have two dogs.

The first we got about a year and a half or so before the second. The first had a barking problem at first, but we worked through it and I think it just stopped with age (She was about one and a half when we got her)

My second dog is named bedford, and he barks just, all the time, and I have no idea what to do.

He barks when he needs to go out, and that is fine, but, then he will just bark at random and never stop.

Even when we try to play with him or give him attention. We can be sitting on the couch or the floor, calling to him, being willing to pet or cuddle him, and he will just back away a few feet and keep barking. This doesn't always happen, he is a big cuddle bug, but, it happens enough on a daily bases.

Giving him a treat or something to chew on will keep him quiet for a little bit, but then he is right back at it. And I don't want to just keep shoving treats at him.

Now you might be thinking "OP, he is bored"
Maybe, but I don't know how to help. He is around 3 years old, and 90% + blind. He see's shadows right in front of his face, but thats it, now, he is otherwise healthy and happy, and will run around the house, even up and down the stairs like a happy idiot, but, he doesn't run around outside really. He doesn't really play with toys, even treat toys that he needs to smell but not see. I can't throw a ball around for him or anything else because even if he can hear it, he won't go chasing after it.

You might be thinking walks, and yes, we do that, weather permitting, at least once a day, and that may keep him quiet for an hour or two, but long term it won't help. And some days its just not a thing that can easily be done. (Due to weather or other things)

Both my dogs have plenty of toys and chew things in the house that they both just ignore.

So I don't know what to do. I LOVE my dogs, i would never give them up, or hurt them in anyway. However, i have started to realize it is affecting my mental health as well. Daily I am just in a bad mood dealing with this incessant barking that I don't know how to stop. I am snapping at people and just bring irate.

Does anyone have any experience dealing with this, or just any helpful advice? Because I am at the end of my rope.

Dog has suddenly started peeing in the house again

Hi,

I've got a 6 month old puppy who I swear to the divines was and is house trained. She's started peeing inside the house again, which we thought might be a reversion to more infantile behavior on the return of her primary human to the household (about three weeks ago). We've taken steps back towards how things were when she was being trained, i.e. letting her out more regularly. Today I got up at 5am to let her out, she did, decided she didn't want to go, returned to the door about half an hour later, and before I could get up she peed on the floor. We're taking her into the vet wednesday to see about why her stitches from being spayed aren't quite healing properly, and I'm going to make sure to ask about UTI, but what else could be causing this?

Thanks

Our cat is pissing everywhere and we've tried a ton of stuff, help?

I'll try to make this as short as possible. Wife and I met about 4 years ago. At her apartment, she had 2 cats, Oliver and Curtis. Curtis is the problem child. He pisses everywhere. At her apartment, she had 2 litter boxes. He will shit in the boxes, however when it comes to urinating, he prefers carpet, any kind of carpet. It got so bad at her apartment she had to get the plastic mats (like the kind under computer chairs) and line all around the litter boxes. He would pee on it and we would just have to clean it up. He ended up ruining that carpet.

Fast forward, we bought a house, and moved in together, I brought along my cat Dante. We now have 3 males in the house. 3 litter boxes in the laundry room. The basement was finished and had carpet. We thought that moving had cured him. Then we noticed a weird smell one day after some water had gotten in the basement from a heavy rain. Turned out he had been pissing all over the place in the basement. We pulled the carpet up and you could see all the little spots. We took the carpet out. Then he started pissing ON the treadmill, it got all down in the motor, it was a nightmare to clean. Now he's moved onto area rugs and bath mats, clothes baskets, fresh and dirty laundry. It's getting out of control.

We have taken him to the vet, we thought maybe he had a UTI, nope he's good and healthy. Tried moving boxes to different locations in the house. Tried getting an additional box that's huge and introducing him to it. Tried putting his face in it when we caught him doing it. Changing the boxes every other day (this got expensive and didnt solve anything after a month so we stopped) tried scrubbing everyplace that he had peed at prior. Nothing is working.

It's like he has some fetish that he can't go where he's supposed to be going. I don't know what else to try but it's getting really annoying cleaning up cat piss all the time. Any suggestions?

dog throwing up

So it’s currently 3am and yesterday morning my dog got into a tub of butter (she didn’t actually eat that much of it) and had been throwing up all day and now night as well.

Of course, I’ll take her to the vet if it continues but as that’s not an option right at this second I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to help her.

She just threw up twice in the span of half an hour, both times after drinking a lot of water.

I hate my cat right now

I’m sorry if this is the wrong subreddit for this post but whatever. I went to therapy this morning, I got up at 4am and went to therapy at 8, when I was about to leave they said I was a suicide risk and made me stay until they got my mother to pick me up and they basically told her to bring me to her place and have me live there for a few days.

I knew my cat would be loud and annoying because I didnt play with her all day today, but it’s midnight and she hasnt stopped. I’m waiting for neighbours to start getting angry, I always get up at 4am. I was pretty sleep deprived today and now I’m going to be sleep deprived tomorrow. I should have slept in the ER but I tried not to so I would sleep at night.. lol

She’s sitting in the window now and quiet so maybe she’ll stop now. I’ll play with her when I get up to get ready in 4 hrs if I can even sleep for all of them. I kind of hate the doctors not letting me go home and ruining my day’s plans and now my cat won’t chill out.

Ive been wanting to own a canary. But since i work an 8 to 5 job from mon to fri, i fear that the canary will be lonely. Luckily enough my job is near my home so i go home for lunch. Will the canary be okay if i leave the canary alone for a few hours a day?

kitten with cone?

my husband and i adopted a kitten yesterday. we took her to the vet today because she was messing with her incision and the vet gave her a cone. she has to wear the cone for 10 days. she has a hard time eating, and will not jump down from the couch due to her vision being blocked (that’s my guess?). i’m just concerned she won’t get down to go to the litter box or get food/water. if i put her down on the floor, she freaks out and jumps back up on the couch. i just don’t know what to do so she will jump down to get what she needs

My cat HATES my boyfriend

So, my boyfriend has been living with me for 9 months and my cats have always loved him. My youngest cat, Pepper, has always had flea problems and we’ve tried everything, but nothing has worked. My boyfriend was doing some research on other ways to get rid of fleas and decided to give her a flea bath. It actually worked and she hasn’t had any flea problems. The only problem is it’s been a month since said bath and she absolutely HATES him because of it. She hides as soon as she hears his car pull in the driveway and she hides until he goes to bed at night. If she even sees him she’ll growl and hiss at him. He’s tried ignoring her, he’s tried giving her treats, he’s tried everything. I feel terrible because he loves my cats, he got rid of their fleas. I’m just worried that she’ll never get over being afraid of him. How long do you think she’ll keep acting like this?

Dog bit parakeet what should I do?

He was bit only in the tail area, his wings and feet and face are intact but he cannot fly, all the wings on his tail are gone and there is blood but he is not bleeding anymoreall vets are closed and the open ones dont treat birds. We currently have put him in a cardboard box with a small sheet on the bottom and towel over the top so he doesn't try to fly out and hurt himself, he is breathing and moving and blinking but is there anything we can do to better his conditon?

Who here has introduced a kitten (cat) to your current kitty?

Our current little guy hasn't hit the weight limit to be neutered yet, but we were thinking of getting him a friend for now. He's definitely a handful!

Is this a good idea to introduce a new kitten? We've had ours for 3-4 weeks and he's been all over our house, so I'm wondering if there's a chance he'll become territorial. Also, we're erring on the side of caution and adopting a male around the same size.

Anyone else introduced a second kitten (cat) to your first and how did it go? Thank you

Cat occasionally gets poop stuck to his butt/fur

Yesterday morning I woke up to the sound of my cat rubbing his ass all over my apartment floor, so naturally there were traces of poop pretty much everywhere. Gave him a bath then cleaned my floors. My guess is he had mild diarrhea and it just didn't come out completely and it stayed in his fur, which is quite long for a 10 month old kitty. Is this normal for a young cat? This is the second time this has ever happened to him.

I'm thinking of cutting Fancy Feast out of his diet and just sticking to regular kitty formula.

I need help with my cat

We just can't get rid of his fleas and he's an indoor cat, they go away for a week or two but then come back and it's frustrating. We've tried flea drops for different sized cats thinking we needed to go bigger since my cat is big, we tried a flea bath (yes I know cats hate water but my family well mainly me are desperate). I just can't find a way to rid him of his fleas and I believe that when we give him flea drops some of them hop off him and then eat me alive because I never have any issues with fleas biting me until after we give him the drops, and I stop having issues with being bit a few weeks later.

Young cat keeps play fighting with sister and reopening a wound. What do I do?

Hello,

I adopted two high energy brother & sister kittens two years ago.

They both enjoy play fighting, but sometimes the boy takes it too far and the girl defends herself accordingly. My boy received a head wound that has since enlarged because he won’t stop fighting her ... it will scab over, start to heal and then reopen again due to their fighting. This has gone on for over two weeks now. It doesn’t look infected, I put antibiotic ointment on it every day (he hates that).

What else should I do? I can’t separate them as they would break down a door just to get to each other - nor can I cone him as I believe he would go nuts if I do. I can’t let him outdoors as it will certainly get infected. Should I place him in boarding until he heals?

Thanks a lot!

Advice on if I should attempt to acclimate a new kitten into my home.

I'll try to keep this as short as I can. My girlfriend and I have had our one cat, Goobie, for around 3 - 4 years now. She's not an overly social cat to my girlfriend. She has the same colors as a Russian blue, but I'm pretty sure she's a gray tabby. For reference, if you've seen the Cinderblock videos on r/all, she's just a normal sized version of Cinderblock.

Anyways, Goobie loves ME, the guy, she will let me hold her, rub her. She sleeps on me and next to me every night. However, she's pretty much off limits to my girlfriends affection. When my girlfriend attempts to touch her it irritates her, no growling or hissing, just playful bites that indicate "Haha, please don't."

Anyways, with that out of the way, you can see why my girlfriend wants a second kitten. I have my animal, which I adore but I also totally understand why she wants to bring a second cat into the equation. Only thing is I don't know how Goobie is going to handle this. She's been a single cat her whole life. We have some stray cats in the neighborhood who will come up to our windows and Goobie is a little standoffish to the cats. Rubbing up against the window, or swatting at the window. No hissing really, just some light huffs and puffs. Does anyone have a similar situation to this, or think it would be OK to bring a kitten in? I would obviously attempt to separate them in different rooms for several days. Maybe put their food bowls next to the door. Then I'd swap the rooms and let them get used to each others smells. then eventually let them meet each other in person.

Does anyone have any experience with this? With one cat kind of being a asshole and introducing a second animal into the home? Any advice would be appreciated!

The Perceptions of Pet Owners in the Dating World

Hi all I’m a researcher at Penn State University and I’m conducting a study about the perceptions of pet owners and dating, I’m not sure if this is allowed in this subreddit (and if it’s not I preemptively apologize) but I would be very interested in hearing the perspective from people in this subreddit. This study should only take about 2-3 minutes to complete, I would be be very appreciative if you could fill it out thank you so much!

Kitten suddenly won't use his box at night?

We have two cats. One is an adult neutered male, about a year and a half, the other is about a male about 4 months old. He's scheduled to be neutered next month. I should clarify he isn't even ours, but since our housemates won't take care of their cat, we do. We have 3 litter boxes. 2 covered and 1 uncovered. The uncovered one is our housemates' box that they NEVER clean and their dog constantly gets into. The covered ones belong to us and are clean. We haven't changed litter or food or anything either. The kitten was at the vet less than a week ago and they said he's perfectly healthy and can't imagine why he's suddenly peeing outside his box. He won't poop outside of it and he will pee in it... but only during the day. At night, it's like he no longer understands and pees in my dirty laundry hamper instead. I'm glad he's not sick and I'm not angry at him, but I am very confused as to what could be causing this?

Any ideas? I haven't tried changing his litter type yet, but I might if he keeps it up. We also gave both covered boxes a good scrub down just in case he didn't find it clean enough. We can't lock him out of our bedroom at night, because he yowls and wakes everyone up if he can't be with his big brother and us.

Just to avoid any redundant questions that may come up;

Both cats have been to the vet. Both are very healthy.

They're on a grain-free diet. They get wet food in the mornings before we leave for work and dry food in the evenings before we go to bed. Their intake is regulated for their breed, weight, and age.

They have a flowing filtered water dish that they have access to 24/7. It's always full and clean.

They have access to all 3 boxes at all times. We leave our door open for them to come and go as they please when we aren't home.

They're both indoor kitties.

Older kitty is neutered, younger is to be neutered next month.

Their litter is the dust-free type. It's a multicat formula.

This is recent behavior for the kitten. Within the last 2 weeks.

He seems to only go in my dirty laundry hamper. Specifically, my work aprons which are usually covered in sugar syrup.

This only occurs at night. Possibly a visual problem?

Both kitties adore one another and get along fabulously. They cry for one another if they're ever separated via a door.
